ZABENE to carry Top Weight in the Dunedin Gold Cup 4th February

FORTUNA'S classy staying galloper, ZABENE ( Danehill-Emerald Dream) will contest the ( Listed) Dunedin Gold Cup over 2400 metres at Wingatui this Saturday, 4th February.

ZABENE disappointed at his last start in the Trentham Stakes, however since returning to Rangiora, he has not put a foot wrong in his preparation.

ZABENE is no stranger to this event, having won the event in 2010. Regular rider, Mathew Cameron, is riding at Te Rapa on the day, so the classy up and comer, Danielle Johnson, takes the mount.

Fortuna Director, John Galvin, is happy with his charge. "He does have to carry his share of weight at 59kgs, but the 2400 metre distance is perfect for him and his class will take him a long way in this event."

Trainer, Jason Bridgman comments:

“Zabene has done well since his uncharacteristic run at Wellington. we have been pleased with him since his return to Rangiora and thus we decided to start him in the listed Dunedin Gold Cup on Saturday. He is the class horse of the race and will have to carry 59 kg as a consequence. Danielle Johnson, who is a great partner for a horse like this, takes the reins.

“From the nice barrier he won’t have to work hard to take his usual handy position in the running. If he runs back to his best form this season, he will be a genuine each way chance.”
