New Plymouth

Race 2, Horse 3, SHARKI BRAHMA. Ridden upside down last time and yet still won. Can certainly repeat. To be ridden by Mathew Cameron. Showing $3.80 on Fixed Odds.

Race 5, Horse 10, Prestigiosa. This is a strong field, but she has the forrm and a 2kg allowance. Does need some luck from the draw. Lisa Whelan to ride. Showing $10 on Fixed Odds.

Race 6, Horse 3, LUMIERE BLUE. I am going past the hotpot here, Karaka Million winner OCKHAMS RAZOR and going for the local for better value. Ridden by Shannon Doyle. Showing $10 on Fixed Odds.

Race 8, Horse 15, Pomellato. Has to make a big setp up here, but races off the minimum, has a stayers pedigree and in very good training hands. Ridden by Sam Collett. Showing real value @ $18 Fixed Odds. EACH WAY.

Race 10, Horse 3, GUNS AT FIVE. Has a way to go to catch up with Black Caviar, but has won four in a row, showing very good from in all. In same class today as last start win and has to carry an extra 3kgs, but can cope. Ridden by Mark Hills. Showing $4.80 on Fixed Odds.

Flemington

John Galvin's Selections for Saturday February 11th

Selections for seven races at Te Rapa today plus three races at Awapuni. Plus One from Caulfield ( Melbourne)

And how did we do today? Well, only one winner but a large number of dividend paying placings. Frustrating for win only punters but good if an each way or place only punter. See results below.

Te Rapa

Race 3, Horse 1 DENMARK. An impressive winner at Trentham last start @ 1400 metres, today  the step up to 1600 seems ideal. Top stable, top rider in Sam Spratt. Showing $3.80 on fixed odds. UNPLACED BUT UNLUCKY. NEXT TIME

Race 4, Two selections here for a dutch bet ( i.e back them both to win), Horse 3, MACIANO and Horse 4, POWERPLAYA. Both look like up and coming staying types, MACIANO is $7 on Fixed Odds, POWERPLAYA $17. BOTH UNPLACED

Race 5, Horse 3 QUINTESSENTIAL. Only won by a nose last time in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham, but was no chance to win at the 300 metre mark and yet still got up. 2000 metres ideal for her today. We tipped her last time @ $12.70, she is showing $9 on Fixed Odds today. 3rd PAYING $2.90 THE PLACE

Race 6, Horse 5 ZANKURO. Has had great form in last few starts; steps up a grade here today and also in distance. From good stable and has S Spratt aboard. Showing $9 on Fixed odds. 3rd PAYING $3.40 THE PLACE

Race 7, Horse 11. ROCK N POP. The 2000 Guineas winner is all class, wasn't suited by the pace of the race last time and yet still won. The step up to 2000 metres should be ideal for him. Matthew Cameron aboard. Showing $3.80 on Fixed Odds. 3rd PAYING $1.90 THE PLACE

Race 3. Another race with two selections, Horse 3  MUNGO JERRY and Horse 10 RE DEEL. MUNGO JERRY looks slightly the stronger on paper but RE DEEL is trained on the track. Back them both. No 3 showing $7 on Fixed Odds and No 10 a juicy $21. MUNGO JERRY 3rd MONEY BACK, DE REEL UNPLACED

Race 10, Horse 7 HEXIE HAO. A steadily improving type who won nicely last time in Maiden Class, well drawn and gets 1kg off his back courtesy of apprentice M Vance. Showing $10 Fixed Odds. 2nd PAYING $2.80 THE PLACE

Awapuni

Race 3, Horse 6 SCARLET OHARA. Won very well at Trentham last time. Looks hard to beat in this six horse field. Showing $2.60 Fixed Odds. WON PAYING $2.90

Race 6, Horse 2 VRONSKII. Has built some solid form this preparation and was resolute Maiden Class at Trentham. Up in classs but does not look a strong field. Daryl Bradley to ride. Showing $5.50 Fixed Odds. 3rd PAYING 1.90 THE PLACE

Race 7, Horse 4 SAN PEDRO. Very easy winner last time. Has to get past the well performed TRAVOLTA, but is up to the task. Showing $7.50 on Fixed Odds. UNPLACED

Caulfield

Race 7, Horse 4 FIRST COMMAND. Will be at false odds because of the presence of Kauta Queen in the filed but has winning credentials. Showing $5 on Fixed odds. 2nd PAYING $1.30 THE PLACE

John Galvin's Selections for Saturday Febuary 4th.

Three NZ selections today, all at Te Rapa

So, how did we do? Not so good, no winners, one 3rd placing paying $2.80

Te Rapa

Race 2, Horse 2, TRAPICHE. Strong record at today's distance, great fresh up record, talented rider in C Ormsby; he ticks a lot of boxes. Showing $4 on Fixed Odds. RESULT-UNPLACED.

Race 6, Horse 11, SCATTERCAT. Won on this track last start. Up in disyance today. Likes to lead so, if can control the pace, could steal this race. Craig Grylls to ride. Showing $10 on Fixed Odds, a lot more on the tote. EACH WAY. RESULT-UNPLACED.

Race 9, Horse 6, OPTIONS. Has strong overall race record, won last start at 2100 metres at Ellerslie in stylish fashion. Wee suited by the race conditions here. Ridden by Maya Vance. Showing $8 on Fixed Odds. RESULT-3rd PAYING $2.80 THE PLACE.

John Galvin's Selections for Saturday January 28th.

Eight NZ Selections today, six at Trentham and two at Riccarton. Plus one from Sandown ( Melbourne).

Finally, we have a "special" selection today, one that sits outside normal selection criteria.

So How did we do? Three winners from nine starters. Level bets on each each of the starters produced $2.18 return for each $1 outlaid, or a Return on Investment of 118%.

Trentham

Many qualifiers today that meet normal selection criteria for this segment. This reflects some very strong and even fields at Trentham today. However, there are some juicy odds on offer.

Race 1, Horse 5, THE KNIGHT. An easy winner in Maiden Class last time at Hastings. Drawn nicely and very capable rider in saddle in J.Riddell. Showing $4.20 on Fixed odds. RESULT? 3rd PAYING $1.90 THE PLACE

Race 2, Horse 5. ASHBURN LANE. Has stern opposition with a number of form horses in the race, but has a great course and distance record. Drawn well and has the service of J.Riddell. Showing $14 on Fixed odds. EACH WAY. RESULT? UNPLACED

Race 3, Horse 4, FLEMINGTON. Has hit a purple patch of form last few runs after being a very ordinary performer previously. Won well last time, although on soft track. Has run close placings on Good tracks however. Ridden by Craig Grylls. Showing $10 on Fixed odds. RESULT? UNPLACED

Race 4, Horse 13, IRISH BAY. Won in dominant fashion at Hastings last time in lower grade. Drawn Ok and has the talented Lisa Allpress in saddle. Showing $10 on Fixed odds. RESULT? 3rd PAYING $4.10 THE PLACE

Race 5, Horse 7, QUINTESSENTIAL.  An up and comer, this will be a test, but lead up form hard to fault. From a top stable and has Lisa Allpress to ride. Showing $10 on Fixed Odds. RESULT? WON PAYING $12.70

Race 8, Horse 14, PEACE LILY. This is the Wellington Cup and I have gone for some "value" here, choosing a light weight last start winner who is definitely off the radar. This mare is an out and out stayer who had has an ideal lead up campaign for this event. Last start win was in the wet but has strong good track form. Showing a massive $41 on Fixed odds. EACH WAY. RESULT? LATE SCRATCHED-MONEY BACK.

Riccarton

Race 1, Horse 2, ZENAGEN. Racing in good form and benefits from a 4kg allowance courtesy of apprentice Celia Winberg. Showing $6 on Fixed odds. RESULT? UNPLACED

Race 4, Horse 2, HEMINGWAY. Coming of some good West Coast from, looks well placed here. David Walsh to ride. Showing $3.60 on Fixed odds. RESULT? WON PAYING $3.20

Sandown

Race 8, Horse 5, PAGO ROCK. Trained by Moody, ridden by Nolen, unbeaten on the course and winner of 2 out of 3 at the distance, fresh up and unbeaten 3 from 3 in that state, he looks a moral bet today. Showing $4.50 on Fixed odds. RESULT? WON PAYING $3.70.

THE SPECIAL

Trentham, Race 2, Horse 10, STARPIN. Failed badly last start in Newmarket at Ellerslie, but form prior to that very sound. Worth another chance and ridden by leading hoop, Mathew Cameron. Showing $7.50 on Fixed odds.RESULT? UNPLACED.

John Galvin's Selections for Saturday January 21st. So, how did we do? No winners today, but five placings. See below for results.

Please note that these selections have been posted Friday evening (usually done Saturday morning) before track conditions have been announced and before Saturday morning final fields prices are available

Five NZ selections for Saturday, three from Pukekohe and two from Trentham. Plus one selection from Rosehill ( Sydney).

Finally, we have a "special" selection today, one that sits outside normal selection criteria.

Pukekohe

Race3 Horse 8, IDIDIT. I usually shy away from horses who have won their only start and then step up to the higher grade, but this 3yo filly showed a ton of speed when winning at Rotorua and did it indeed, on her ear in fact. Trained by the astute Paul Jenkins and to be ridden by Samantha Collet. UNPLACED

Race 5, Horse 1, ALEGRIO. This horse has fashioed an outstanding record; has to lug some weight at 59kg's but is up to it. Has a great course and distance record. Trained by Richard Collett and riden by Alysha Collett. RAN 2ND PAYING $2.20 FOR A PLACE

Race 6, Horse 11, RIOAVIADOR. An impresive winner at her last start, this filly had been racing without luck previously. Has drawn well and will be ridden by Alysha Collet. RAN 3RD PAYING $3 FOR A PLACE

Trentham

Race 4, Horse 4, DEMOPHON. Brings a strong formline to this race; from top Sargent stable and in form rider in Jason Waddell. Drawn nicely and excels at the 1400 metre distance. RAN 3RD PAYING $3 FOR A PLACE

Race 6, Horse 5, NASHVILLE. Has had two impressive wins and a srtong 2nd from just two race day starts. Has been freshened but then trialed strongly for a win over 1000 metres 10th January. Strong wraps on this son of Darci Brahma. Kelly Myers to ride. RAN 2ND PAYING $1.80 FOR A PLACE

Rosehill

Race 6, Horse 2, PARTHIAN. Running right into form, strong course and distance stats, trained by Peter Snowden, riden by rising apprentice star, S Guymer, who cliams 3kgs, this looks like the bet of the day at Rosehill. RAN 2ND PAYING $1.70 FOR A PLACE

The "Special"

Trentham, Race 9 ( Telegraph Handicap), Horse 10, DURHAM TOWN. Had no luck in Railway, but form prior to that just super. Has won 5 times from eight starts and all 5 wins have been at the 1200 metre distance. Drawn the ace, only has to carry 53.5kgs and has the services of big race jockey, Vinnie Colgan. This race is usually won by a very good horse and DURHAM TOWN looks perfectly suited here. He will be paying around $9 by my estimate, so this is a strong EACH WAY bet. VERY UNLUCKY WITH THIS RUNNER. WHEN MOUNTING A STRONG RUN ON THE RAILS, DURHAM TOWN WAS BUMPED BY ANOTHER RUNNER AND LOST HIS JOCKEY, VINNIE COLGAN OVER THE RAIL

John Galvin's Selections for Saturday January 14th

Five NZ Selections today, two at Ellerslie, three at Awapuni and one Sydney selection. How did we do? One winner paying $13.80 on tote and two placings. See below

Ellerslie

Race 1, Horse 8, RAZIYYA OF SYDNEY. A big step up in class for this last start Maiden winner but she is talented and would have taken a lot of improvement from her winning run at Te Rapa 17th December. Oaks bound, she will be looking to stamp her class in this event. Drawn well, trained by Jason Bridgman and ridden by Premiership leading rider, Matt Cameron. Showing $4 on Fixed odds. Finished 3rd.

Race 10, Horse 9, GUESS WHAT. This Danroad 3yo gelding looks like a handy stayer in the making and this race is clearly part of a lead up campaign toward the NZ Derby on 3rd March. Ran them off their feet at Tauranga. Ellerslie specialist jockey, S Shirahama to ride and he claims 2kgs will will asist as well. Showing $6.50 on fixed odds. Finished 2nd

Awapuni

Race 4, Horse 12, SCAREAWAY. Loves a wet track and brings solid form, albeit in Maiden grade, to this race. Is at ods, showing $14 on Fixed. Each Way. Unplaced

Race 9, Horse 1, JUSTANEXCUSE. This horse is all class and won easily last time at WFA level. Has to carry some weight with 59.5kg but can cope. From top Lisa Latta stable and ridden by classy rider, Daryl Bradley. Showing $4.20 on Fixed Odds. Unplaced

Race 10, Horse 17, OUTBACK GIRL. Won very easily at Hastings New Years day on a Heavy 10 track, so should cope with the soft conditions today. Ridden by Robbie Hannam. Showing $9 on Fixed Odds. WON, paying $13.80 on Tote.

Rosehill

Race 10, Horse 5. Mon Soleil. Has a difficult draw to overcome but from top Chris Waller stable on home track and ridden by super jock Hugh Bowman. Showing $5 on Fixed Odds. Unplaced

John Galvin's Selections for Saturday 7th January

Three NZ selections today, two races at Tauranga and one race, but two selections at Woodville. Also two selections from Sydney.

Tauranga

Race 5, Horse 3, CHOICEMAN. Ticks many boxes, trained on the track, 3kg allowance courtesy of up and coming apprentice Alex Forbes. Has a very good track and distance record and handles a wet track. Showing $4.50 on fixed odds but nore than that on the tote.

Race 7, Horse 8, CARLOTTA. Strong last start winner this distance but lower grade 14th December. Has to cope with going up in class but will appreciate the track conditions today. Each Way. Showing $8 on fixed odds.

Both of these races form part of the guaranteed $650,000 Pick 6 today, so are "must" includes in your combinations there as well.

Woodville

Race 3 has two last start winners. Horse 7, VERA DE BOSSET and Horse 8, MISS CENTREFOLD. The first horse has stronger form overall but the second won in impressive fashion last time ans has the benefit of a 2kg apprentice claim. No 7 is showing $4 on fixed odds, No 8 $12, so my recommendation is to go "dutch" on them putting two of your normal betting units on the 7 and one betting unit on the 8.

Warwick Farm ( Sydney)

Race 3, Horse 3, GRENADA ROAD. From the powerful Peter Moody stable, this well bred mare is up from Melbourne where her form has been excellent. Gets the benefit of a 3kg apprentice claim ( rider Sam Clipperton) and should be right in this race. Showing $4 on Fixed Odds.

Race 4, Horse 1, TIGER TEES. A winner of 6 races from 8 starts, has drawn nicely, trained on the track by one of the best in Sydney, Joe Pride, it ticks a lot of boxes. Showing $3.10 on Fixed Odds.

John Galvin's selections for Boxing Day

Three NZ selections today, two at Ellerslie, one at Wingatui.

So How did we do? Check out in italics below.

Ellerslie

Race 4, Horse 10, STARPIN. A real up and comer in top form and top rider, Matt Cameron, on board. Needs a little bit of luck form the draw. A great each way bet showing $10 to win on tote. Didn't fire and finished last.

Race 5. Horse 3, ROYAL QUEEN. Last start winner in this grade and at this distance. Has 2kg claim from a rider who has a great record at Ellerslie. Showing $13 on tote. Unplaced

Wingatui

Race 1, Horse 6, THE SOLITAIRE. Three wins from twelve starts, has won on the track and at the distance. Is short at $3 but looks the one. Finished 2nd, half a neck from the winner.

John Galvin's selections Saturday 24th December

One NZ selection today at New Plymouth. Also two Selections at Sandown ( Melbourne). So How did we do? See in italics below. One winner from two runners ( one runner late scratched at barrier); a 50% return on capital for the day.

New Plymouth

Race 3, Horse 4, McLAREN. Won nicely last time and should improve from that resuming run. The Talented Rosie Myers is to ride. Showing $6 on Fixed Odds. Nosed into second on the line, but then relegated to fourth after enquiry.

Sandown

Race 2, Horse 6, GRENADA ROAD. Strong training/jockey combo here with Peter Moody/Luke Nolan. Up in distance and roomier Sandown track will suit. Showing $3 on the tote. WON paying $3 on tote.

Race 7, Horse 4, ROSES IN THE GLEN. A promising type, never out of the money in four starts to date, with a very good trainer/jockey combo also. Showing $5.90 on the tote. Late scratched at barrier.

John Galvin's selections Saturday 17th December

Two NZ selections today, one at Te Rapa and one at Awapuni. Also one Sydney selection.  So, How did we do? See in Italics below

TE RAPA

Race 3, Horse 2 ALEGRIO. Has to get past the very classy VEYRON but does get a 4kg pull in the weights and has a great course and distance record. Ridden by Alysha Collett. Showing $6 on fixed odds. Couldn't get past the very classy VEYRON and ran 3rd.

AWAPUNI

Race 7. Horse 9, SACHA. Won the prelude to this race in very stylish fashion last week, has an excellent record on the track and has a top trainer/jockey combination. Showing a juicy $12 on fixed odds, making her a great each way bet. Unplaced

WARWICK FARM

Race 3, Horse 6, FLYING SNITZEL. Odds are short @ $2.30 Fixed, but a very impressive winner on debut and it would take something very special to beat her today. No luck in the running, finished strongly for 3rd.

John Galvin's selections Saturday 10th December

Five NZ selections today, four at Te Rapa and one at Awapuni. So, how did we do? See below in italics. TWO WINNERS FROM THE FIVE SELECTIONS, A 150% RETURN ON CAPITAL FOR THE DAY.

TE RAPA

Race 2, Horse 10, PAYETTE. Has impressive form statistics with three wins and three seconds from eight starts, loves the 1200 metre trip and in a good stable. Alysha Collet to ride claiming 1kg is a help as well. Showing $5.50 on fixed odds.   UNPLACED.

Race 4, Horse 8, LION ROCK HILL. Very strong Maiden win last time; this is a lot harder but he looks to have the ability to step up. Showing $7 on fixed odds.   FINISHED A FAST FINISHING 7TH AFTER HAVING NO RUNNING ROOM IN STRAIGHT. NEXT TIME.

Race 9, Horses 1 and 11. This is a Group 2 race for Fillies and Mares. I cannot split the last start winners, FAZZLE and LADY KIPLING. Both have strong form credentials, both drawn well, both from good stables and both have top riders aboard and they carry the same weight. Go "dutch" and back then both, FAZZLE showing $12 on Fixed Odds, LADY KIPLING showing $9.   A GREAT RESULT WITH LADY KIPLING STORMING HOME PAYING $7.60 ON TOTE, FAZZLE FINISHED 6TH, 3 LENGTHS FROM WINNER.

AWAPUNI

Race 6, Horse 4, SHAHBAB. Good form statistics, draw slightly tricky at eight in a nine horse field, but loves the trip and has a very good rider in Kelly Myers aboard. Showing $3.50 on fixed odds and $6.50 on tote.   A NAIL BITING FINISH BUT OUR SELECTION PREVAILED BY A NOSE PAYING $5.30
