Sir Invincible and Volkarrie to clash at Timaru Thursday 4th

The well performed Fortuna Two Year Olds, Sir Invincible and Volkarrie, make their Three Year Old debut at Timaru on Thursday 4th September when they clash in a 1200 metre event for Three Year Olds.

Sir Invincible, who won his first two starts in convincing fashion and then went on to race creditably in the very best company, despite being plagued by bad barrier draws, comes up against his stablemate, Volkarrie, who was more lightly raced at Two, having only three starts, including a win at his second start and then running third in a Listed Stakes race at Riccarton in the autumn.

" Both horses have done well over the late autumn and winter periods and have furnished up as bigger, stronger types this preparation," said Fortuna Syndicates Manager, John Galvin, " and now we await the development of their Three Year old campaigns with a lot of interest."

The primary target for both geldings this Spring is the One Million Dollar 2000 Guineas at Riccarton on November 15th.

Elusive Fortune to debut at Te Rapa Wednesday 3rd September

Elusive Fortune (Elusive City-Centennial Star) makes his long awaited raceday debut over 1100 metres in a Maiden 3yo event at Te Rapa on Wednesday 3rd September. Raced by the Fortuna (No 3) Syndicate, the big, strong gelding has been an exceptional trials performer, having won twice, been placed second twice and was a close up 5th in a strong field at Te Teko two weeks ago.

" We are looking forward to this debut run" said Syndicate Manager, John Galvin, " he has shown us a lot to date. He is a big, strong, relaxed galloper who can also run on the pace. He will probably be looking for more ground but we are expecting a nice performance."

Race a Filly with Trackside Presenter, Karyn Fenton-Ellis

Te Akau supremo, David Ellis, inspected the Fortuna (No 8) Syndicate filly by Choisir out of For Love a few days ago and subsequently wrote the following email to Fortuna Director John Galvin;

"Dear John, Just a note to let you know that yesterday I was over at the stable and was very impressed with the Choisir/ For Love filly. What a magnificent filly she has grown into and every body who has ridden her is most impressed. If ever I have seen an Oaks filly this is it. Could you please keep a share in this filly for my wife Karyn. Kind Regards David Ellis"

The good news is that we still have two shares left in this lovely filly. Ingoing price is $7,850 for a 5% share comprising initial cost of $7,100 plus monthly syndicate payments of $125 for the six month period April to September. This puts incoming shareholders on exactly the same footing as original shareholders. Ongoing monthly payments are $125 per month from 1st October.

Danzero-Tehama Colt nominated for Golden Slipper

This week Te Akau Racing Stables nominated the Danzero-Tehama Colt, owned by the Fortuna (No 10) Syndicate for the Golden Slipper, run at Rosehill (Sydney) in April 2009. The Golden Slipper is the world's richest race for Two Year olds with the winner's prize being in excess of A$2m. The Colt's sire, Danzero won the Golden Slipper and has sired a Golden Slipper winner already in Dance Hero.

To illustrate the importance of this news, this is only the third time that a Te Akau horse has been nominated, the other two being King's Chapel and Don Garcia. Neither made the event in the end but King's Chapel was a top two year old and was NZ Horse of the Year as a Three Year old.

The reason Mark Walker has nominated the yet to be named Danzero Colt for this race is because of what he has shown is so far in his preparation, he has done everything right and his impressed his handlers with his attitude and his athleticism. Of course, the chances of him making the event are still very slim, he would need to be an absolute top quality Two Year Old here in NZ and stay fit and sound in order to be able to travel to Australia to take on the best Two Year Olds over there. Nevertheless, it is s reflection of the regard that his handlers hold him in that this step has been taken.

He's Licarocket to start Otaki Sunday June 22nd

Fresh from a last start win at Te Rapa June 7th, He's Licarocket, raced by the Fortuna No (2) Syndicate, will back up at Otaki June 22nd over 1200 metres. See Race Days section for more detail

He's Licarocket very impressive at Te Rapa June 7th

He's Licarocket delighted his large group of owners and their supporters by pulling off a breathtaking win in the Soliloquy Lodge Juvenile over 1200 metres at Te Rapa.

Raced by the Fortuna (No 2) Syndicate, "Ollie" as he is affectionately known by his connections, he had drawn the ace barrier and claimed 4kg courtesy of young up and coming apprentice rider, Daniel Stackhouse. He jumped well and held the rail behind the leaders. His rider had to check him off heels at the 800 metre mark but he recovered nicely and was well poised to mount his run just in behind the leaders as they swung for home. The gap closed however and Stackhouse had to switch the horse inside for another run. This gap also closed and at the 150 metre mark, it looked as if the horse had nowhere to go. Finally, a slight gap opened and the rider urged He's Licarocket through, bursting to the front 50 metres from the post to score a very nice win.

"Wow" said Syndicate Manager, John Galvin, " That was sensational to watch, I had given up hope at the 150 metre mark. That was a very heady ride for a young jockey."

He's Licarocket will now be set for the (Listed) Ryder Stakes at Otaki July 26th

He' Licarocket Stepping out at Te Rapa Saturday 7th June

The promising two year old, He's Licarocket contests Race One at Te Rapa Saturday. See Race Day news for more information

He's Licarocket contesting Two Year Old event at Matamata Saturday 10th May

He's Licarocket is seeking to improve on his close second on resuming at Tauranga 19th April. The son of Easy Rocking should relish the soft track conditions at Matamata but has to overcome top weight and a widish draw. See Race Days Page for more information.

He's Licarocket resuming at Tauranga Saturday 19th April

Debut winner He's Licarocket (Easy Rocking-Triplina) reappears on the racetrack at Tauranga this coming Saturday after a lengthy spell. A smart winner on debut at Otaki in November, the two year old gelding has not raced since the Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

Raced by the Fortuna (No 2) Syndicate, He's Licarocket has thrived since his spell and will appreciate the easier track conditions that will prevail at Tauranga. See Race Days Page for further details.

Volkarrie runs third in Listed event at Riccarton

Fortuna (No1) Syndicate gelding, Volkarrie, lived up to his promise by running home strongly to finish third in the Listed Two Year Old event, the Selwyn River Stud Champagne Stakes at Riccarton on Sat 12th April.

The lightly raced son of Volksraad was taking a big step up in class to a Listed event after winning a maiden 2yo event at Otaki on 27th March. His task was made no easier by drawing wide in what was a very good field, however despite being an estimated seven lengths off the leader at the 300 metre mark, Volkarrie finished the race off very strongly to run into third place behind eventual winner, All In Brawl.

Syndicate Manger, John Galvin, was on course together with a number of the owners to witness the race and was very happy with the outcome. "This is great result for us. This was only his third start today, he is still a little green, he had a tricky barrier draw and what I wanted to see was a strong finish from him and that is exactly what he did. He is going to develop into a really nice three year old."

Volkarrie, the two year old half brother to the smart galloper, Woburn, bought his small army of supporters (Fortuna (No 1) Syndicate) great joy by winning over the 800 metre trip at Otaki on Thursday 27th March.

Ridden by Te Akau apprentice, Sam Collett, the son of Volksraad jumped well and sat outside the leader most of the race, and held on nicely in the straight to win by a long neck

"This was a very good effort by this horse" said trainer Mark Walker "we had only really prepared him for a trial at Waipa last Tuesday but decided to give him a trip away instead and give him a raceday start as a trial. He is a smart type with real future potential."

Volkarrie's success means that Fortuna Syndicate horses now have a 100% wins to starters ratio for the 2007/08 season, a statistic that makes Fortuna founder and Director, John Galvin, very happy. "This is an incredible debut year for a new enterprise" said John Galvin " to be able to have Sir Invincible, He's Licarocket, Tell A Tale and now Volkarrie all as winners is a great thrill for me and, of course, a great thrill for our investors."

Volkarrie now heads South to the Rangiora base of Te Akau Racing Stables where he will continue to prepare for his next assignment, a 1200 metre Stakes event for two year olds at Riccarton on Saturday 12th April.

He's Licarocket puts in good performance at Te Awamutu Trials 25th March

The Fortuna No (2) Syndicate 2yo gelding, He's Licarocket, put on a satisfying display at Waipa trials today. Ridden behind the leaders by Te Akau Senior apprentice, Troy Harris, he was squeezed for room early in the straight, but galloped home strongly once clear for a nice second.

He's Licarocket has already had two race day starts, winning on debut at Otaki in November before failing at Ellerslie in December, a race after which he pulled up shinsore. Plans are now to send him to the races in about three weeks time.

Elusive Fortune wins again at trials

Fortuna No 3) Syndicate 2yo gelding, Elusive Fortune (Elusive City-Centennial Star), showed that his previous trial form (a win and a second from two trials) was no fluke with a strong performance over 1100 metres at Cambridge Trials 11th March. He bounced out of the gates well and sat on the pace before going to the lead on the turn and holding off the challengers very nicely

Trainer Mark Walker was very satisfied with the effort "This horse is a big, strong, relaxed staying type" he said, " but he has shown us he has good early speed as well. I am sure he is going to be a very strong contender in the 3yo Group events next season."

Elusive Fortune will now be spelled for a few weeks before returning to Te Akau Stables to prepare for his 3yo career.

Sir Invincible in running for $100,000 Bonus

Sir Invincible steps out in the Carnival Sale Bonus Event for two year olds at Ellerslie Saturday 1st March. This event carries a $40,000 stake but there is an extra bonus incentive of $100,000 to be paid to the first horse home that was acquired at the 2007 Carnival Sale.

The speedy son of Sir Invincible has again not fared well with the barrier draw, having drawn the outside marble in a field of twelve, however he has been performing well in trackwork and with some luck in the running, should put on a bold performance.

His connections are hoping that jockey Jason Waddell can exhibit similar tactical riding skills that he showed with a compelling riding performance on Te Akau Coup in the Matamata Breeders Stakes last Saturday.

Tell A Tale puts in bold performance in Listed event at Matamata

Two year old gelding Tell A Tale delighted his connections with a strong performance in the Listed Ford Fairview Slipper at Matamata Saturday 23rd February.

The handsome son of Tale of The Cat settled back just past mid field, was forced wide on the bend, exhibited his strong sprint by making up a lot of ground between the point of the turn and the 200 metre mark, before ducking in toward the rail, but still finished the race off nicely for a fourth placing.

"That was a nice run considering his less than ideal draw and track conditions that were probably unsuitable" said trainer Mark Walker.

Tell A Tale will have a brief spell for a week or so and be reassessed as to whether to start him again at two or put him aside to prepare for his three year old career.

Tell A Tale to contest Listed event at Matamata

Tell A Tale ( Tale of The Cat-Cheeky Veronika), raced by the Fortuna (No 5) Syndicate, takes a significant step up in class this Saturday in contesting the Fairview Ford Slipper Stakes over 1200 metres at Matamata.

"This is a very strong field" said trainer Mark Walker, " We have three Te Akau runners fronting up and all deserve their spot. And there are a number of other well performed runners in the field as well. However, I have been impressed with how Tell A Tale has progressed since his emphatic victory at Hawera 31st January and he has to be a very good chance."

Tell A Tale has drawn 8 in a field of 10 and Stable Apprentice Troy Harris takes the mount.

Fortuna horses to step out at Cambridge trials

Tueday 19th February sees the Fortuna (No 3) Syndicate gelding, Elusive Fortuna and Fortuna (No 6) Syndicare filly, Sahara Storm, show their stuff at the Cambridge trials Tueday 19th February.

Elusive Fortuna (Elusive City-Centennial Star) , described by his handlers as "big, powerful and relaxed" has trialled previously at Paeroa late November where he finished a nice second after being slow away. He was then spelled for a month before coming back into work. Sahara Storm (Desert Fox-Te Akau Trek) is a half sister to the very smart three year old filly, Special Mission. She has also trialled (Cambridge in December) for a third placing and was then spelled.

All of the Fortuna syndicates horses have impressed with their trial performances this year, so we await the outcome of Tuesday's trials with no little interest.

Tell A Tale scores impressively at Hawera

The two year old gelding Tell A Tale (Tale of the Cat-Cheeky Veronika) lived up to his looks in winning by four and a quarter lengths in the Maiden Two Year old event at Hawera Thursday 31st January

Ridden by Te Akau Senior Apprentice, Troy Harris, Tell A Tale began well, settled one back on the rail in a race with moderate pace. Harris eased him off the rail at the 700 metre mark, moved him forward, was three wide on the turn and the horse showed great acceleration and lovely stretch to win by a wide margin easing down. Fortuna Director John Galvin was on course together with three of the Syndicate members, Peter Hobill from Christchurch, Stefan and Karen Lombard from Palmerston North and Gillian Caskey from Stratford.

" A great thrill for the owners" said John Galvin " this horse has been showing us a lot at Te Akau Stables and now he has delivered; he could have a bright future in front of him"

Fortuna Director, John Galvin, active at Karaka Premier sale

John Galvin returned home to Hamilton Tuesday 29th January, after two hectic days at the Karaka sales, to start putting the documentation together for four acquisitions.

" I am very happy with our acquisitions" said John Galvin " it has been a very strong sale, but we have bought well. David Ellis and Mark Walker have done a wonderful job for us in sorting out and acquiring three colts and a filly for Fortuna Syndicates."

The four yearlings acquired are Lot No 1, a chestnut colt by shuttle sire Captain Rio out of the Group winning Volksraad mare, Bahira, Lot 126, a striking chestnut filly by the International Group One winning sprinter Choisir out of the Group winning Omnicorp mare, For Love, Lot 207, a bay colt by NZ Champion Sire Volksraad out of La Brillante (by Sir Tristram out of Eight Carat) and Lot 406, a brown colt by Golden Slipper wining Sire, Danzero, out of the Centaine mare, Tehama

Fortuna Ltd has received NZTR approval on its Disclosure Statements and Syndicate Agreements for all four syndicates and the costs per 5% share in each syndicate are as follows:

Captain Rio Colt $9,500
Choisir Filly $7,100
Volksraad Colt $7,750
Danzero Colt $5,750

See the opportunities page for full details and pictures for each of these acquisitions

NB Applications for investment into Fortuna Ltd Bloodstock can only be made after investors have received and signed a Disclosure Statement.

Tell A Tale steps out at Hawera 31st January

The very smart looking Tell a Tale, raced by the Fortuna (No 5) Syndicate and a graduate of last June's Magic million sales on the Gold Coast, will have his second race day start at Hawera this coming Thursday 31st January.

The son of Tale of The Cat impressed birdcage observers with his looks on debut (31st Dec) and ran home strongly for third after having to come around heels at the top of the short Taupo straight.

See the Race Day section for full details.

Sir Invincible unplaced in Karaka Million event

A great turnout of investors in the Fortuna (no 4) Syndicate were on hand to watch their charge, Sir Invincible, take his part in the inaugural running of the Karaka Million at Ellerslie on Sunday 28th. Expectations of a good result were there, but muted by the fact that Sir Invincible had a wide barrier draw.

Ridden by senior jockey Hayden Tinsley, the horse got away well, but was squeezed in the early stages by horses around him, raced a little keenly during the race and battled on bravely in the straight to finish about four lengths from the winner. The owners present were very philosophical about the outcome, probably summed up best by part owner Vivienne Olsen of Taupo, who said " It has just been a great thrill and honour to even have the opporunity to start in this race," a view echoed by other owners present.

The race was won by Vincent Managano, who defied all of the gloomy barrier draw predictions by drawing the widest in the field, but produced a barn storming run down the outside to win.

Sir Invincible draws wide again in Karaka Million

The barrier draw Gods continue to frown upon Sir Invincible. Drawn wide at his last two starts connections were hopeful that the luck of the draw would come their way this time but it was not to be, with him drawing 13 out of 19. However, only 14 start and there are two horses on the ballot who have drawn inside, so he may start from 11 in the end. Syndicate Manager John Galvin was philosophical "We can only play the cards we are dealt with" he said " Hayden Tinsley is a highly experienced big race jockey and providing he can slot him in somewhere, we are still a chance."

"If there is one consolation from the barrier draws, it is that a number of the leading chances are also drawn out, however that probably means that the race is even more wide open than before" he went on to say.

Hayden Tinsley to ride Sir Invincible in Karaka Million

Fresh from piloting Captain Fantastic to a narrow win in the Group Two Wakefield Challenge Stakes for two year Olds at Trentham on Saturday, the highly experienced Hayden Tinsley will be looking to pick up another big race win to add to his already impressive career tally when he rides Sir Invincible in the Karaka Million at Ellerslie on Sunday 27th January.

This will be Tinsley's first ride on the son of Invincible Spirit, but Syndicate Manager, John Galvin, was really happy to see Tinsley engaged. " Having a senior, experienced jockey of Hayden's calibre in a race like this where the pressure will be white hot is really important" he said. " This is going to be a very even race with no clear standouts in the field and we need every adavantage we can get." The next challenge for Sir Invincible, not to mention all of the other thirteen starters, will be the all important barrier draw which takes place later this coming week.

Fortuna Two Year Olds unplaced in Eclipse Stakes

It wasn't Fortuna Syndicates Investors' day at Ellerslie on New Year's day with both of the Fortuna horses entered in the Eclipse Stakes (Group Three) running out of the money.

Sir Invincible always had a very hard task in front of him from the outside barrier, however he ran on very stoutly in the straight finishing just 2.8 lengths from the winner.

"That was a terrific run" said trainer Mark Walker after the race, " if he gets a good barrier draw in the Karaka Million, he will be a real chance."

He's Licarocket, who was having his second race day start after winning impressively on debut in November, put on a disappointing display finishing well back. However, he was very shin sore on pulling up which goes a long way to explaining the disappointing performance.

Sir Invincible will now start next in the Karaka Million Sunday 27th January at Ellerslie while He's Licarocket will go to the spelling paddock and have a well earned rest for a month or so.

Tell A Tale runs third on debut at Taupo

Tell A Tale maintained Fortuna Syndicate horses' "in the money" runs with a nice third on debut over 1100 metres at Taupo on Sunday 30th December

Ridden perfectly by Te Akau Stable apprentice, Troy Harris, Tell A Tale jumped nicely, settled into the trail one back on the rail, had to come around heels at the top of the straight, ran a little greenly in the straight but finished the race off very well for third behind winner, Fully Fledged, ridden by the senior Harris, Noel.

Trainer, Mark Walker was well pleased with his charge. "We will see how he pulls up before making plans" he said, " but I am very happy with that performance, he is a nice horse in the making."

Two Fortuna horses nominated for Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie

Sir Invincible and He's Licarocket have both been nominated for the Group Three Eclipse Stakes to be run at Ellerslie New Year's Day. This race was always planned for Sir Invincible with He's Licarocket set to contest the Two year old event at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. However, He's Licarocket drew badly (13) so trainer Mark Walker decided to scratch him and wait for another opportunity.

The Eclipse Stakes for a Stake of $75,000 has drawn a strong field with the likes of San Bernadino, I Robot, Silk Spur and Key Message lining up.

Meanwhile Tell A Tale, raced by the Fortuna (No5) Syndicate makes his debut at Taupo Sunday 30th December. See Race Days section for more information.

Sir Invincible runs second at Awapuni Saturday 22nd December

Bold riding tactics by Te Akau apprentice Samantha Collett were not sufficient to keep I Robot, trained by Matamata rival trainers, Mike and Paul Moroney, at bay.

Sir Invincible had drawn wide and Collett speared him to the front so as not to be caught wide in the running. Meanwhile I Robot was getting the gun run one back on the rail and set out after Sir Invincible at the top of the straight and managed to wear him down over the last 50 metres or so to win by a length at the line, with the third runner being a further seven lengths back.

The cracking pace set by Sir Invincible resulted in a track record that had stood for 21 years being broken; I Robot's winning time was 1.03.9.

Syndicate Manager John Galvin was very happy with Sir Invincible's run. "It was his first start in eight weeks, he had the wide barrrier draw to overcome, they ran the race in a very fast time and he will undoubtedly improve with the run."

Subject to Sir Invincible coming through his run well, he will next be seen in the Group Three Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year's Day.

Track Conditions conspire against Volkarrie on debut

Heavy overnight and a resultant slow track (pentrometer 3.6) did Volkarrie no favours on his debut at Te Aroha Wednesday 19th December. He bounced out of the gates nicely and was certainly in contention in the straight but was unable to quicken in the soft going however still finished a creditable 5th, 2.5 lengths from the winner.

" He didn't cop the track at all" was Jockey Troy Harris' comments on dismounting.

Trainer Mark Walker was upbeat despite the outcome. " It was always going to be hard with the wide draw and the track conditions simply didn't suit" he said, " but it was a nice run under the circumstances so we will press on and find a suitable race for him to contest next."

Volkarrie is eligible for the Karaka Million event at Ellerslie on 27th January but needs to win sufficient prize money in order to make the final field of 14 starters.

Tell A Tale maintains Fortuna Syndicates strong trials record

Tell A Tale did his bit for the cause by winning his 800 metre trial at Cambridge Tuesday 18th December. Ridden by Te Akau apprentice Troy Harris, he bounced out of the gates nicely, then took a sit behind the speed before stretching out in the straight to win nicely by 3/4 length in a time of 47.07.

"Very pleasing" was Trainer Mark Walker's initial comments " he is ready to go to the races now."

Tell A Tale is the fourth Fortuna horse to win at the trials this Spring, bringing much delight to Fortuna Director, John Galvin and undoubtedly, the Syndicate Investors also.

Fortuna Director John Galvin tastes more race day success

John Galvin enjoyed his 26th race day win when Lady Classique broke her run of recent misfortune through bad luck in the running by winning at Riccarton on Wednesday 12th December.

This 4YO daughter of Stravinsky/Maiden Over posted her third carrer win, jumping well and settling nicely for Te Akau apprentice Samantha Collett. Despite looking as if she could be blocked for racing room as they turned for home, Samantha guided her home strongly in the $8000 Riccarton Park Function Centre Rating 76 3&4YO 1200m and she romped away to win by three quarters of a length. She has now raced 20 times for three wins, three seconds, five thirds and four fourth placings. John Galvin shares in the ownership as part of the Mandalay Bay Syndicate (Mgr DC Ellis) comprising John and four business associates. This Syndicate has previously enjoyed success with Kapsdan (4 wins), Comical Ali (two wins) Star Align (one win).

Fortuna Horses on list for Karaka Million race

Fortuna horses maintain excellent Trials record for Fortuna Syndicates at Paeroa Trials

Volkarrie (Volksraad-Harriet) starred at the Paeroa trials on Tuesday 27th November by winning his 700 metre heat in 39.95, the fastest two year old heat of the day. Ridden by Te Akau stable senior apprentice, Troy Harris, Volkarrie sat in just behind the leaders and maintained a powerful winning run to win by a head at the line. Volkarrie is now headed for his debut race day appearance at the Counties meeting Wednesday 19th December. Elusive Fortune (Elusive City-Centennial Star) maintained the excellent trials day performances by Fortuna Syndicate horses this spring by running second in his heat. He was somewhat slow away over the 700 metre trip but finished off his run very nicely. Looking more like a three year old type than a two year old, Elusive Fortune is now off to the paddock for a three to four week spell. Fortuna Syndicate horses have run in 10 trials between them this spring for six wins, two seconds and two thirds. A very promising debut indeed.

He's Licarocket wins brilliantly on debut

He's Licarocket (Easy Rocking-Triplina) added to the Fortuna Syndicates impressive race day record to date by winning his debut race over 800 metres at Otaki on 13th November. Drawing three in a field of nine starters in the two year old event, he jumped only fairly, but rider Michael Walker tapped him up and held the rail. He kicked on nicely and held of the challengers to win in the very smart time of 45.86. "The majority of the owners are first timers and to win their first race with their first horse is a great thrill." said Fortuna Syndicates Director, John Galvin. He's Licarocket will next be seen on the race track at Ellerslie on Boxing Day with his ultimate mission being the Karaka Million event at Ellerslie on January 27th.

Sir Invincible wins again

The Fortuna (No 4) syndicate owned two year old colt, Sir Invincible, underlined his potental with another emphatic win at Riccarton on Sunday 21st October. Ridden by Te Akau senior apprentice Troy Harris, the Invincible Spirit colt was never tested by his opposition and won as he liked under a hold. Sir Invincible now travels to the North Island where he will contest the time honoured Wellesley Stakes (Listed) for two year olds on Saturday 27th October. The Karaka Million event for two year olds to be held at Ellerslie on the last Sunday in January is now Sir Invincible's prime target.

He's Licarocket scores another Trial win at Taupo 9th October

He's Licarocket trialled at Taupo Tuesday 9th October on a dead track, ridden by Troy Harris over 750m. He jumped well and led the field up on the fence at a nice steady clip. One horse came up to challenge him at the turn but he kicked away to win nicely by a neck, in a good time of 46.27 seconds. However, the gelding is just starting to feel a little shinsore, so the plan from here is to give him some quiet trotting at the Stables for the next few days and then give him a 2-3 week spell with the aim of having him ready to race in December.

Volkarrie runs 2nd Taupo trials 9th October

The Fortuna (No 1 ) Syndicate gelding, Volkarrie, trialed Tuesday 9th October at Taupo on a dead track over 750m, ridden by stable apprentice, Sam Collett. He jumped well and then travelled up a little “greenly” to the top of the straight, but he then ran on well to finish 2nd. On dismounting, Sam reported that he is just starting to feel his shins a bit, so the plan now is to give him a few days quiet trotting at the Stables and then spell him for two weeks or so in a nice grassy paddock. We will then bring him back in to work with a view to having him ready to race in December.

Sir Invincible scores brilliantly on debut

Described in the form guide as "on this day and in this race the best named horse in the country", Sir Invincible lived up to his looks and his reputation by scorching away to a convincing 5 length victory in the Ainger Tomlin Juvenile over 800 metres at Riccarton Park. Ridden confidently by Te Akau Stables apprentice, Troy Harris, the colt led all of the way and sprinted away from the opposition when shaken up by his rider at the 300 metre peg. Sir Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Muffin McLay)– purchased by David Ellis for the Fortuna (No4) Syndicate, was the top-priced lot at the Auckland Cup Week New Zealand Bloodstock Carnival yearling sale in March. Syndicated by John Galvin, director of Fortuna Ltd, Sir Invincible got this new syndication business off to a flying start, being the first of the five Fortuna Ltd acquisitions to date to go to the races.

Sir Invincible to make his raceday debut Saturday 22nd September

The first of the Fortuna Syndicate colts to go to the races will make his debut this coming Saturday, Race 3 (12.55pm) at Riccarton. Sir Invincible, who has shown blistering speed in two trials wins to date, steps out in a small field of five two year olds. He is to be ridden by Te Akau stable apprentice, Troy Harris.

Fortuna Investors, Ralph and Frances Maxwell, pinching themselves

Ralph and Frances Maxwell, investors in the Fortuna(No 4) Syndicate, were celebrating Saturday evening after their filly Special Mission made it three wins from three starts by winning the Carters-Gib Stakes, a Listed $60,000 event for three year old fillies at Wanganui Saturday 8th September. Drawn wide, Special Mission was settled midfield by jockey Michael Walker, accelerated around the turn and pulled away from the field to win by two lengths. Special Mission (Towkay-Te Akau Trek) is the first horse the Maxwells have raced in their own right.

Sir Invincible wins again at trials

Sir Invincible ( Invincible Spirit-Muffin McLay) underlined his reputation with an impressive trials win over 600 metres at Riccarton Friday 7th September. Owned by investors in the Fortuna (No4) Syndicate, he went to the line under a tight hold by rider, Michael Walker, winning by 3/4 length. Sir Invincible is set to make his race day debut in a juvenile event over 800 metres at Riccarton, Saturday 22nd September.

Te Akau Sweeps NZ Racing Awards

Te Akau performances, both human and horse, were honoured at the industry's night of glitz and glamour on Friday at the 2006/07 Mercedes New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards. The annual black-tie event was hosted in Hawkes Bay for the first time and was attended by over 500 industry guests including the Minister for Racing, the Rt Hon Winston Peters MP. Te Akau won every category in which its representatives were named as a finalist: For the second year in succession, Te Akau trainer Mark Walker was named Dunstan Trainer of the Year, the third time he has clinched this title. Walker had a phenomenal 2006/07 season winning more races than any other stable in New Zealand and thus claiming the Trainers' Premiership. He also won more Group and Listed races and more stake money than any other trainer and had the best strike rate of the country's top 10 trainers. Te Akau had won the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year title last year with the classy Shikoba and this year, brilliant filly Princess Coup already had the 2006/07 version of that title sewn up going in to Friday's awards. However, Princess Coup was also a finalist in the hotly contested Mercedes Champion Three Year Old of the Year category, one of the few categories to have five finalists named. Owners Ray Coupland and John Bromley were thrilled to return to the stage to receive this second award for their outstanding Encosta de Lago mare whose season highlight was undoubtedly her scintillating five length win in the Group 1 NZ Oaks in March. Five time Group One winner Darci Brahma was again recognised for outstanding performance. Named Mercedes Champion 2YO and again Mercedes Champion 3YO in his respective years, his 4YO year was applauded as he was named 2006/07 Mercedes Champion Sprinter on Friday night. Raced by the Te Akau Breeding Syndicate (Manager David Ellis) it was a fitting accolade for the stallion who now stands at The Oaks Stud - his electrifying effort to win the Group One Telegraph Handicap in January is still being talked about, and he followed this with an inspired effort to win the Group One Waikato Draught Sprint less than one month later before being retired. Te Akau apprentice Troy Harris was on hand to accept his trophy for the title of McBeath Champion Apprentice Jockey of the Year and Te Akau stable rider for much of the season Opie Bosson was named Mercedes Champion Jockey for 2006/07. Now in Singapore for a riding contract, David Ellis accepted the award on Opie's behalf and paid tribute to the jockey's professionalism and dynamic riding skill which saw him win more Group and Listed races during the past season than any other rider - including the Group One victories aboard Darci Brahma and Princess Coup.

Further success at Te Teko trials

Volkarrie, the Volksraad-Harriet colt owned by the Fortuna (No1) Syndicate stepped out for his trials debut at Te Teko trials Tuesday 4th September. He missed the jump slightly, but quickly recovered, ran nicely along the rail and scored a nice win with a one and a half length margin in the smart time of 34.85. This colt is showing lots of ability on a limited preparation to date. In the second heat for two year olds, the striking looking colt by Tale of The Cat out of Cheeky Veronika (Fortuna No 5 Syndicate) put up a strong finishing burst in the staright to finish 3rd after rearing at the start and then being pushed wide on the bend in the 600 metre event.

Fortuna Director, John Galvin, notches win no 24

Saperavi, the 2006 Karaka sales topping colt ($2.2 million) and a half brother to the outstanding entire Darci Brahma provided John Galvin, one of the shareholders in the colt, his 24th win at Ashburton on Friday 24th August. Saperavi (Stravinsky-Grand Echezeaux) drew awkwardly (14) in the 1200 maiden event but travelled well and finished down the outside of the field to win by a comfortable two lengths. " It was a great thrill, despite only being a lowly maiden race" said John Galvin, " there is always a degree of nervousness on the part of owners when a horse like this steps out and it was great to see him win so stylishly." Saperavi is being set for the Group One 2000 Guineas at Riccarton in November, a race won by his illustrious half brother in 2005. Saperavi's win also means that John Galvin maintains his perfect record as an owner with every horse he has raced having greeted the judge.

Sir Invincible moving to South Island

The promising Sir Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Muffin McLay) departed Matamata Tueday 28th August for a stint at Te Akau Racing Stable's Rangiora base. "This colt's main mission is the Karaka Million race at Ellerslie in late January" said Syndicate Manager, John Galvin "and track and weather conditions in the South Island are much better suited for a free going type like Sir Invincible than they are in the North Island at the moment." The Rangiora stable also presents a much more relaxed environment than that at Matamata for young horses The colt's preparation will continue as before but his early two year old racing will now take place in the South Island.

Fortuna Syndicate colts off to a great start.

Two of the Fortuna Syndicates colts trialled at Te Teko Tuesday August 7th. Sir Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Muffin McLay) and He's Licarocket (Easy Rocking- Triplina), both 2 year colts, made their trials debut. He's Licarocket set the ball rolling in heat one over 600 metres by bouncing out of the barrier, cruising up to the leader on the turn and powering away in the straight with a four length winning margin and a time of 35.58. " This colt is a real racehorse" said rider Michael Walker after dismounting, " He just wants to run." The excitement had barely died down among the owners present when Sir Invincible (Invincible Spirit- Muffin McLay) stepped out in heat three. From the inside barrier, he missed the jump a little, but soon put things right by powering along the rail, cornering the bend like a true professional and then blitzing his rivals in the straight to also win by four lengths in the sensational time of 34.59. "A galloping machine" was jockey Michael Walker's comments afterwards.

Syndicate Colts named

The Fortuna (No3) Syndicate colt by Elusive City- Centennial Star has been named Elusive Fortune. A strong colt with considerable size to him, he has been spelling at Te Akau Stud after his initial education period and is almost ready to reume training duties at Te Akau Stables. The Fortuna (No 4) Syndicate colt by Invincible Spirit out of Muffin Mclay has been named Sir Invincible. This colt has been showing a lot to his handlers in his early preparation stages and will trial at Te Teko Tuesday August 7th.

Fortuna Investors have instant success on their own account

Ralph and Frances Maxwell, who have shares in the Fortuna No 4 syndicate colt, Sir Invincible, have made a fairytale debut into racing ownership on their own account. Frances Maxwell had the good fortune to be in Ireland earlier this year and while there, visited the Irish National Stud, where Invincible Spirit, the sire of Sir Invincible stands. Frances was so taken with the whole setup there, that on her arrival home, she said to Ralph that they should acquire a broodmare or two and get involved in breeding thoroughbreds as well as racing them. Subsequent discusions with John Galvin and David Ellis led to a recommendation being made that the Maxwells would be better to acquire a two year old filly, race her with a view to gaining black type for her pedigree and eventually turn her into a broodmare. Ralph and Frances subsequenly inspected Special Mission (Towkay-Te Akau Trek) who was in work with Mark Walker and who had already won a trial. The Maxwells liked what they saw and acquired the filly. A week later, she won a trial at Paeroa by over three lengths, then made her debut at Matamata July 4th, where she won a Maiden event by a stunning seven and a half lengths and on Saturday 28th July capped that off with a compelling two length victory in The Ryder Stakes, a Listed event at Otaki. Well done, Ralph and Frances.

Invincible Spirit Colt, Lawman, wins again at Group One in France

Fortuna investors who have bought into the Fortuna (No 4)Syndicate colt (Invincible Spirit-Muffin Mclay), have been cheered by the success of the outstanding three year old son of Invincible Spirit, Lawman, who on the 8th July, added another Group One victory to his previous win in the French Derby9 Group One). Stepping out in the Prix Jean Prat (Group One) over 1600 metres, Lawman was never headed and had plenty to spare at the finish. Footage of the event can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB4JRBbACEE

Tale of The Cat progeny succeeding in Australia

Good news for the latest Fortuna acquisition. The colt's Sire, Tale of the Cat posted his eight and ninth individual Australian two year-old winners this season with a two state metropolitan double in Sydney and Melbourne courtesy of Cat Flap (2f Tale of the Cat - Wadderwin, by Danewin) and Hawas (2f Tale of the Cat - Tempting Beauty, by Flying Spur). A striking liver chestnut with four white feet, the Graeme Rogerson trained Cat Flap put her best foot forward at Canterbury to beat the colts and geldings and claim her first win in the restricted event for juveniles over 1100 metres. The Lee Freedman trained filly Hawas opened her account with an easy victory in the open juvenile fillies event over 1200 metres at Seymour, strolling clear to win by nearly two lengths. A homebred for Gooree Stud, from the Flying Spur mare Tempting Beauty, Hawas has shown steady improvement at each run this time in and was overdue for a win. Coolmore based Tale of the Cat has now had 9 Australian juvenile winners including Group Three winner Bantry Bay from his first Australian conceived foal crop, plus New Zealand based stakes-winner El Cuento.

New Acquisition

Fortuna Ltd had acquired its 5th colt for the 2007 year. A striking chestnut by Tale of The Cat out of the Sir Tristram mare, Cheeky Veronika, he was the subject of spirited bidding at the Magic Millions Yearling sale on the Gold Coast before being knocked down to David Ellis. Ellis and Mark Walker had inspected the colt prior to the sale and had reported to us that they had "found" an oustanding type who fitted the Fortuna specifications perfectly. Mark Walker said "he looks as if he will make a lovely autumn two year old and has the scope to develop into a real competitor at three." Fortuna will be syndicating this colt into 20 shares (5% per share) at $9500 per share with ongoing montly costs of $110 per month. Further details including a picture of this fine looking individual are available on the Opportunities page.

Fortuna ( No 4) Syndicate

This Syndicate owns a striking looking colt (stable nickname“ Sloan”) and has attracted a huge amount of attention from his handlers, both at the breaking in phase and at the stables. A very “early” type, he is a particularly compact and athletic looking individual. He appears to be in a big rush to get to the races, having already been through his breaking in phase, initial training, including a jump-out trial at Te Akau stables, a two week spell in the paddock at Blandford Lodge and is now back at Te Akau Stables undergoing further training and has adapted to his environment like a true professional. His Sire, Invincible Spirit, who stands primarily in the northern hemisphere, was the 2006 first season European champion sire and another of his sons, Lawman, recently won the French Derby in a spectacular all-the-way win. Our Colt’s breeding on the dam side is no less spectacular with this pedigree featuring wonderful race mares such as Empire Rose (2nd & 1st in successive Melbourne Cups), Summer Rosa and Summer Fleur. Barring accidents this colt will be trialling for sure in the August trials and we are looking forward to a spectacular two-year old season with him.

Fortuna (No 3) Syndicate

This syndicate owns a yet to be named colt by Elusive City out of Centennial Star, who has furnished up into an impressive looking individual. Known as “Hutch" by the stable staff, he is a little “leggier” than Volkaarie and Licarocket; he will certainly be a starter at two, but also looks as if he will make a strong three year old type as well. His sire, Elusive City, was the champion French two-year old colt in 2002 and again, on the dam side, comes from a strong old New Zealand female line. He has been broken in, has had his early education at Te Akau sales, including a jump-out trial and is now spelling on the farm at Te Akau Stud and will be coming back to Te Akau stables for further training and assessment mid to late July. We are holding two shares in this colt and have made these shares available for sale. Purchase price is $8,600 for a 10% share, plus $440 for monthly costs to date. Again, if you have any interest in acquiring one of these shares, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Fortuna (No 2 ) Syndicate

This syndicate owns a very strong looking colt that has been named Licarocket (by Easy Rocking out of Triplina) and the stable staff call him “Ollie”. His sire, Easy Rocking, is all the rage in Australia at the moment, being the leading sire of two-year old winners in Queensland (has had nine individual two-year old winners so far this season) and on the dam side, Triplina is from a strong New Zealand family including the wonderful race mare Tudor Light. I am particularly impressed with this colt and it would not surprise me at all to see him up and running very early in his two-year old career. One of the shares in this colt (there were ten shares altogether) is held by Te Akau Stud and that share is currently for sale. The share has been offered initially on a “first refusal” basis to the other shareholders in the syndicate, but in the event that none of those shareholders wish to increase their shareholding, then this share is available for sale to the wider market. Accordingly, if you have any interest in taking up this share (cost $10,500 initial contribution, plus $660 for monthly running costs to date), please do not hesitate to let me know.

Progress-Fortuna (No 1) Syndicate

This syndicate owns a very smart looking type by Volksraad out of Harriet and has been named Volkaarie. He is a handsome, athletic colt (stable nick name is “Dusty”) who looks as if he will be a natural two-year old; he has been broken in, has been through a pre-training process and is now in full work under Mark Walker’s tutelage at Te Akau Stables at Matamata. Over the next two weeks or so, this colt will be assessed further and, at this stage, is looking likely he will be a contender for the August trials at either Te Teko or Taupo.

Te Akau Stable Jockey Opie Bosson hits the lead in Jockey Premiership

Opie BossonTe Akau Stable Jockey, Opie Bosson has hit the lead in the 2006/07 Jockey Premiership. As of Saturday 24th March, Bosson was sitting on 101 wins for the season, five clear of former premiership leader and last years premiership winner, Lisa Cropp. Bosson, who had over twelve months out of the saddle because of a weight problem capped a remarkable season, in which he won 15 Group or listed races, including 5 Group One races, by kicking home iron horse, Sir Slick, in the Group 2 Japan International Trophy race at Tauranga last Saturday. Opie (real name: Owen Patrick) saw his weight balloon out to 73kgs during his "retirement" but made a decision mid 2006 to get back to competitive race riding and with the help of the Sure Slim dieting programme and some hard work, managed to get his weight down to 55kgs by the start of the current season.

"I just love riding winners" says Opie, "and to be associated with a great stable like Te Akau run by professionals such as Mark Walker and David Ellis is the icing on the cake."

Te Akau Success

On Saturday 17th March, at Trentham, Mark Walker and Team Te Akau attained further Group One glory when Princess Coup won the $300,000 New Zealand Oaks. After Saturday’s racing Mark Walker was leading the trainer’s premiership with 57 wins followed by Stephen McKee and Michael Pitman with 47 wins. Of more importance is the strike rate with Te Akau holding a strike rate of 5.53, a rate which is only bettered by one other training team, Richard Collett and Shane Hapeta (5.17). The Te Akau team is really firing.

The Trainers’ Premiership Table with the key points to note being Mark Walker’s overall lead in the table, the Stakes won by Team Te Akau, the G & L (Group and Listed Races won) and, of course, the Strike Rate. You can see, in looking at these figures why Fortuna Ltd has chosen Te Akau as its “stable of preference” when it comes to the selection and training of the Fortuna Bloodstock.

Volksraad Sets New Earnings Record

A recent victory by the smart galloper, Bono, pushed Volksraad progeny earnings for the 2006/07 season to date to over $2 million, the first time this has ever been achieved in a season. In 2006/07, Volksraad has produced 41 winners (winning 67 races) from 106 starters, a great strike rate indeed.
