Four Fortuna runners Friday/Saturday this week – one at Timaru on Friday and Three confirmed Runners in Singapore on Saturday 5th September – plus one on Ballot
Timaru runner is UK import, the 5yo KHAFEEF – a Maiden winner in France over 2100 metres in August 2019, he made his NZ debut over 1300m at Taupo in August, drew wide, got back and finished off strongly for 5th. Bred to stay, he now gets up in trip to 1600m, will certainly need further eventually but looks well placed in this R65 event – has drawn Barrier 4 on a Dead 6 track – Jason Laking takes the ride – presents as a nice each way chance in this
Fortuna runners in Singapore on Saturday 4th are Entertainer (Race 4 – 5.30pm NZT), Federation (Race 11 – 9pm) and Sportscaster (Race 13 – 10pm) – Showbound is Race 8 (7.30pm) but does need scratchings to get a start
4yo Entertainer has had two starts in Singapore for two third placings. A bold free going type, the penny still needs to drop with him with respect to learning how to relax in his races. He steps up to 1400m this week in the Restricted 4yo Maiden on the Turf, gets Barrier 1 with the very much in form Ruan Maia in the saddle. From barrier rise, if he can let one or two come round him, relax and get a cosy run in the trail, he is a chance.
See below what the Turf Club analysts have to say about this race;
1st Pick: SPEEDY MISSILE (11)
Was the first among the beaten brigade to the impressive The Mareeba Mango at his debut. Will appreciate the extra 200m. Hard to beat.
2nd Pick: HARD TOO THINK (8)
Ran fairly at first start, coming off a run of three wins at his barrier trials. Will strip fitter for this. Go close.
3rd Pick: ENTERTAINER (2)
On-pace sort who will probably lead from barrier one. Will be in this for a long way.
4th Pick: MIEJ (9)
Showed potential at his barrier trials. Always hard to have first ever race over seven furlongs, but if he lives up to his trial form, he can sneak into the minors.
5yo Federation is a 4 win horse in Singapore, so is not without ability, but faces a tough task here in a very strong Class 2 field over 1400m and the outside barrier draw. The highly regarded apprentice K Hakim takes the mount and brings carried weight down to a featherweight 47kgs. Pace up front will be hot, so if he settles back and runs home strongly, he is an outside place chance
7yo Sportscaster was an impressive last start winner over 1200m Class 5 event in August, a trip generally too short for him. He gets 1600m on the Poly this week but is up in grade to Class 4 – has drawn well at Barrier 3 and loves to run on the pace. Apprentice CK Ng brings his carried weight down to 47kgs. Rock hard fit and in great form, he is a lightweight each way chance in this.
Showbound is Ballot 2 in Race 8 and needs scratchings. If he does get a run, he is a genuine place chance contender
Te Akau Track work this week – Fortuna Runners – Matamata

Charmaine’s Dream looked good galloping over an easy 800 metres in 56, home in 41.
Rhapsody In Blue (M Grylls) worked at three quarter pace over 800 metres in 58, last 600 in 43.
Our Final Offer (D Montes de Oca) galloped over an easy 600 metres, home in 40.

Singapore Opportunity
In closing, we bring to your attention our current Singapore opportunity, the 3yo Gelding TITAN (Written Tycoon) that we acquired recently. Agisting in NSW at the moment, he is booked to travel to Singapore 24th Sept and should be ready to make his Singapore debut by the end of 2020.
Titan (who raced in Australia with the name ‘Titan of Industry’) has been identified by Champion Singapore Trainer, Mark Walker as an ideal type for Singapore Racing.
Now a Three Old Gelding (as of 1 August 2020), Titan was originally purchased as a Yearling at the 2019 Magic Million Sale for A$200,000 as a Stallion prospect for Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock Australia group. Trained by Sir Owen’s private trainer, Matt Vella, based at Hawkesbury in NSW, he raced in June and July 2020 for a 5th and a 3rd placing and after determining that he was not quite up to Metropolitan Saturday Class racing and having needed to be gelded he was put up for sale by his owners.
Fortuna acquired Titan at the July Inglis Online Sale for just A$37,500. He is now agisting at Shipton Lodge in New South Wales awaiting to enter quarantine ahead of traveling to Singapore late September 2020 – after exiting quarantine in Singapore, he will be prepared to race by Fortuna’s Singapore Trainer Mark Walker and should be ready to have his first race in Singapore January 2021. He has been fully vetted for Singapore and approved for entry into Singapore by the Malaysian Racing Authority.
As a Three Year Old non winner Titan will be eligible to contest Restricted Maiden Grade events in Singapore, a Grade which carries S$75,000 of prizemoney (approx. NZ$83,000). Once winning in that Grade, he will then be eligible to race in Novice Grade, a Grade which also carries S$75,000 of prizemoney (approx. NZ$83,000). As a Three Year Old in the 2020/21 Season TITAN will be eligible for the Singapore 3yo Series consisting of three Group races run during April and May of 2021 for total prizemoney of S$1.5m approx.
Titan possesses an excellent pedigree. He is by the top Stallion, Written Tycoon, the 3rd ranked Sire by winners in Australia for the 2019/20 season and the Sire of over 530 winners including 58 Stakes Winners. Titan’s Dam, Keltara (by Exceed and Excel) is a three time winner on the track, is the dam of three foals, including Titan and the other two of her progeny have both won on the racetrack. Keltara is a half sister to the Listed winner Missy Cummings – this is a solid family with many black type winners throughout the generations.
Titan was prepared by Matthew Vella, based at Hawkesbury in NSW – he had six trials between October 2019 and May 2020 before making his race day debut on a Slow 7 track at Hawkesbury on the 23rd June running 5th after being caught wide. He backed up at Goulburn over 1000m on 10th July putting in a strong performance for 3rd beaten 1.3 lengths. A strong, handsome, athletic Bay Gelding, standing 16 hands high and weighing 510 kgs, Titan has the physical attributes to match his pedigree. Australian bred Sprinting/Miler types have had an exceptional record in Singapore over the years.
I was really taken with Titan’s second trial at Randwick and then he was very good at his 2nd race day start over a trip (1000m) clearly too short for him. I believe that he is a horse that will mature into himself as a post Christmas 3yr old and beyond. Lightly raced and very sound, I am tipping he can win races in Singapore very quickly – John Galvin and I have bought several horses of this profile over the past couple of years and all have gone well in Singapore – he has a bright future up here.”
Mark Walker and I have been making a bit of an art form of selecting well bred tried horses at “budget” prices over the last year or two – Federation, Red Rover, Brutus, Showbound, Hadeer, Entertainer and Prohibition all being good examples. We have seen enough of Titan to indicate that he can do a very good job for us in Singapore – he is a very nice physical type who, like many Australian trained horses, was probably pushed along too early as a 2yo – he will benefit from a good paddock spell ahead of his travel to Singapore in late September”
