Fortuna Filly MITRE PEAK scores her 1st Win 31st May on the Riccarton Synthetic track

Te Akau trainers Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson and Fortuna Racing made an impact early on the programme at Riccarton, when Mitre Peak (3 f More Than Ready – Liten Prinsessa, by Bernardini) won the $17,000 Entain – NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200 metres – and collecting an additional $20,000 Pearl Series Bonus on top of her winning prize money. Breaking through to the winners circle at her fifth start, Mitre Peak improved notably last start when finishing strongly for fourth in the Maiden 1200 metres on 16 May, also on the poly track at Riccarton, and had 15 days between runs to score on 31 May.

Away well from barrier two to trail for Te Akau apprentice Niranjan Parmar, Mitre Peak capitalized on a rails run in the straight and gamely held a winning advantage inside the 200m. Running 1200 metres in 1:10.3 on the poly track, she won by a neck after drifting in market fluctuations from $4.60 to pay $6.40 & $1.70 on the NZ TAB tote.

Click HERE to see the race replay

Mitre Peak became the 65th win for the premiership leading trainers from their southern stable at Riccarton, and they have established a terrific 3.9 strike rate this season at the Riccarton base. “It’s always good to get a winner for Fortuna Racing,” Walker said. “They are great supporters of Te Akau. She’s been a slower maturing filly, but she’s got a lovely pedigree and that will enhance her value after winning today. It was a lovely ride of Parmar’s. He’s riding with a lot of confidence and got the timing of the race to perfection. She will continue to improve with time, also, but really starting to put it altogether now.”

Owned by Fortuna Mitre Peak Syndicate (Manager: John Galvin), she was purchased for $60,000 by David Ellis CNZM/Fortuna Racing at Inglis 2022 Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney.

“We didn’t pay a lot of money for her, but she’s got a lovely pedigree,” said John Galvin, while packing for Melbourne, in preparation for last start hurdle winner Leaderboard (Street Cry) contesting the Australian Hurdle (3900m) on Sunday at Sandown. “She was actually passed in at that Inglis sale, but with Mark Walker’s help, we chased her down and  managed to get her for the price she was passed in at, so it was good buying. Mark and Sam have been very patient with her, giving her the time she’s needed to mature, and she had been building towards a win. Her last start was very encouraging. She got a nice trip today and was well handled by Parmar. He got her into a nice spot and the leader rolled off the rail, so she never went around a horse. She’s still furnishing physically, but she’s in great order, still has a really nice coat, and I think she’s in the right place. Sending her south has been a good call and she obviously likes the synthetic (poly track).”

MITRE PEAK records her Maiden win – Riccarton Synthetic 31st May – Niranjan Parmar aboard

From the last crop of world renowned sire More Than Ready (Southern Halo), with over 2000 winners, Mitre Peak is from Liten Prinsessa, by another worldwide acclaimed sire Bernardini (A. P. Indy).

Liten Prinsessa, winner of four races to 1400 metres in Australia, is a sister to Karaka Million 2YO (Restricted Listed, 1200m) winner and Champion Two-Year-Old Ruud Awakening, now the dam of Group Three winner Rise Of The Masses (Russian Revolution). Both Liten Prinsessa and Ruud Awakening are out of Dawn Almighty (Danehill), dam of seven individual winners of 31 races, while the family includes dual Group Two winner Ruud Van Slaats (Van Nistelrooy), whose daughter Smashing (Pins) was trained by Te Akau to win six races and stakes place twice. Mitre Peak carries a Northern Dancer cross on the dam line of both Southern Halo and Liten Prinsessa.

Mitre Peak was strapped by Hollie Smith and is raced by the Fortuna Mitre Peak Syndicate, an Ownership Group consisting of 53 individuals, mostly from NZ but with one syndicate Member from Australia

Des Coppins – Guest Selector
Des’ selections for us last week were tripped up by the very heavy tracks at Pukekohe and Trentham, but notable that he tipped out 8 winners on the day (four at each venue) from his  full service plan – he is on fire this past week with his four best bets from the last four venues recording three wins and a second

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and Fortuna fans

Tricky track conditions at last Saturday’s venues caught us out with the the three Fortuna selections, but let’s not panic.
I’ve been kicked in the guts a few times in the last 50 years on the punt  but let’s   just turn the page and fingers crossed for better results on Saturday.

My three suggestions are:

Silver Javelin in race 3 at Pukekohe
She’s ready to win.
She was brave in running third at Te Rapa behind our good mate, Acquarello and she wouldn’t have to improve much to get the job done.
She’s been well looked after and only once in her limited career has she been out of the money.
I loved her run behind the talented Pour the Wine here on January 1 on a soft 7 but she won by a margin this time last year at Matamata on a heavy 10 in a time just under 1.15 for 1200m and that’s almost the time her class was running last week on this track when the rain came.
In other words a heavy track won’t be an issue.

Duncan Creek race 4 at Wanganui
He seldom runs a bad race and this is the easiest class he’s been up against for a good while.
He blundered badly in the deep ground when steadied near the straight entrance at Trentham last Saturday.
In his last 6 starts he’s been racing mainly in solid open sprints, listed races or strong r75 events and hasn’t really disappointed.
He’s asked to carry 60kgs but he’s won lumping 59kgs.
Good to have Joe Doyle back on board with his record with one win and 4 placings from 6 rides. The only time Joe was out of the money on Duncan Creek was in the group one Levin Classic last March when midfield.
He’s comfortable on all types of footing.

Justaskme in r7 Wanganui
What a solid run under handicap conditions last time when coming home the last 600m the quickest.
At w-f-a on Saturday I like him a lot.
He won the race last year effortlessly and I’m banking on him going back to back.
Good punting!

SAILING AWAY contests the R65 1600m event – Race 9 at 4.16pm with Warren Kennedy to ride from Barrier 5 – a strong Maiden winner at Riccarton 14th April over 1400m, he ran a good 3rd next start Riccarton R65 1600m in Saturday company – he gets the same grade and trip here, but weaker company – represents a very good each way chance here. TAB says “One to beat on now he has come up this time in” Showing $2.90/$1.45 fixed odds

Pukekohe – Saturday

STAR SHADOW races in the Listed Champagne Stakes over 1600m for $100k – Race 3 @ 12.26 pm with Wiremu Pinn retaining the ride from Barrier 2. This field is weaker, she will love the 1600m but does have to contend with what will be a very testing track – good winning chance -TAB says “Genuine contender in this suitable contest” – showing $1.40/$1.04 fixed odds

Luck’s a Fortuna

Two-year-old Star Shadow (NZ) (Reliable Man) gives Fortuna Director and Racing Manager John Galvin a strong chance to sign off this preparation with black–type, when she takes her place in the Listed Staphanos at Novara Park Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Pukekohe on Saturday.

Galvin was full of praise for her run at Te Rapa at her previous start in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre 2YO Stakes (1400m).

“She ran the fastest sectionals in the race from the 800-metre mark to the post and was slightly held up for a stride or two in the straight,” Galvin said.

Star Shadow was victorious on debut at Otaki in April on Heavy 8 track conditions.

“That win was over a shorter distance (1300m), with Saturday’s race run over the mile and the track at present is a Heavy 10, so it will be testing for all runners, but at least we do know she can handle that type of surface,” he said.

The Reliable Man filly was a NZ$35,000 Book 2 purchase at Karaka 2023.

“The filly was bought as a three-year-old type, but right at the start of her preparation she was very precocious and at one stage we thought she would be a Karaka Million runner, but we pulled the pin on that idea and gave her more time. Everything she has shown as a two-year-old is a bonus and following this race on Saturday she will go to the paddock.”

Recently Fortuna tasted success at the May Racing Carnival at Warrnambool with former Wellington Cup winner Leaderboard (Street Cry) taking out the Choices Flooring Warrnambool Maiden Hurdle (3200m) by four lengths with Aaron Kuru in the saddle.

“He has been a wonderful horse for us winning a St Leger and Wellington Cup. Three or four years ago former trainer Jamie Richards said he would make a good jumper one day and that is the point of his career now,” Galvin said.

The Australian Hurdle (3900m) will be his next assignment at Sandown on June 2.

“We considered an easier option on the same day but decided he’s a lovely jumper and won well last start, so let’s have a throw at the stumps and go for the big one,” he said.

Our Yearling Filly “Boomer” impresses as a potential early runner

Three of our four 2024 Yearling Sale purchases have returned to the Matamata Stables for their 2nd Stable prep – this after just a three week paddock spell from theie initial Stable prep – for two of them, the Fillies by Written Tycoon and Too Darn Hot, this was no surprise as they looked to be natural 2yo types from day one – the 3rd one though, the Filly by Spirit Of Boom out of Aotearower, is a bit of a surprise packet as Mark Walker reported recently – “John and Team, I inspected the yearlings at the farm the other day and I was pleasantly surprised when I took the cover off your Spirit Of Boom Filly, as she has really thrived during her time off – as you know when we bought her on the Gold Coast in January, she was a Filly with a bit of size and our thinking was that she would be an Autumn 2yo/3yo type, but during her first stable Prep here in April, her trackwork riders all commented on how forward and precocious she was and how strong she was in her action – so given that the has spelled so well, we have decided to bring her back into work with your other two and take her straight through to one of the early season trials as she could well be an early runner – as we know the Spirit Of Booms can be”

Des Coppins – Guest Selector

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and Team
Flashback to last weekend:
We stuck with Acquarello who won like a horse going through the grades and the suggestion to run a quinella into Silver Javelin, who managed third, was close to an even more generous payout.
Francee was a tad disappointing despite running the second quickest final  sectionals and Dresse Par Joli is nearing a win but could only manage 4th for us.
With tougher track conditions continuously asking the question and with so many variables I’d like to think we can still master our share of collects in these tough times. I’ll be doing my utmost to keep us on the right side of the ledger right through the winter.
If you’d like to be part of my daily email best and value bet as well as top 2 tips each Saturday I’d be happy to hear from you via the email dcoppins@xtra.co.nz
The buy in will take you until the end of July and the cost is now reduced to $175 ( gst included).
In the meantime my 3 to watch out for this weekend are:Asgard ( r5 Pukekohe).

This son of Alamanzor was dynamic in winning at Otaki on a heavy track and despite missing last time it wasn’t too bad at Te Rapa. He battled on to finish 5th. The form reads well as the first and second in the Te Rapa have either won or finished second since and the runner who was tucked in behind Asgard at the line won impressively at Taupo midweek. I think Asgard will mature into a classy type. He came off the pace when he won at Otaki but went straight to the front at Te Rapa. Maybe ridden just off the pace is the key to return to the winners circle and aren’t the Alamanzor horses flying at the moment!

Benefactor ( r6 Trentham).

She likes the wet tracks and only once in 5 starts in the heavy has she failed to weigh in.
When she  missed she was almost knocked over so she had a genuine excuse.
I thought her  run at Trentham last Saturday had a “next  up“ look about it.
She’s been working well and despite her top weight I see no reason why she can’t give us a good run for our money around the $9 or $10 mark.

Star Shadow ( r3 Pukekohe)

For the Fortuna team, best of luck with this quality filly.
What she’s doing now is the tip of the iceberg.
I’m a fan of the Reliable Man progeny but the majority do better as three year olds and older. The fact she’s winning races now proves she’s well above average.
Her Otaki win was super.
Against stronger opposition at Te Rapa she was the quickest from the 800 to the post and there’s little doubt she will enjoy the 1600m.
It’ll be wet on Saturday but that’ll worry the opposition more than her.
She’s at skinny odds but a strategic bet is to anchor her in the early quaddie. Some of those early quaddies have paid well in recent weeks.
Good punting!

Fortuna racemare HAYATE records her 4th career win at Cambridge 15th May 2024

Securing a race-to-race double for the Te Akau stable rider Opie Bosson, Fortuna Racing’s HAYATE (5 m Maurice – Vamoose, by Admire Moon) won the $17,000 Rating 60 2000 metres on 15 May at Cambridge. No sooner had Bosson guided Hayate’s Te Akau Racing stable-mate Luxuriant (Iffraaj) to an easy victory in the Rating 60 970 metres than he was back in winning action again with the Fortuna runner.

A winner earlier in the season over 1550 metres on the poly track at Cambridge, and subsequently second there at her next start, Hayatehad been unable to quicken on Soft 7 footing in the Rating 65 1600 metres on 8 May at Matamata, and faced both a drop back in grade and step up in distance. Given an economical trip on the inner from barrier two, Hayate was away from the rail and improving between runners inside the 600m and drew out to win well after arresting the lead mid-straight. In the race sponsored by Oakvue Lodge/Serenity Park, Hayate ran 2000 metres in 2:04.7 on the poly track and paid $5.20 & $2.20 on the NZ TAB tote.

Click HERE to see the race replay

“She was helped with a drop back in grade to Rating 60 and it was good to get another win with her,” said Mark Walker, who trains in partnership with Sam Bergerson. “Great, too, to get another winner for Fortuna Racing, John & Jessica Galvin and their owners –  they’ve had a great run of wins in recent weeks. She has shown to handle the synthetic surface really well, so should be able to be placed nicely with the upcoming meetings on the poly tracks. It was also good to see her step up and win over 2000 metres, which shows she can handle a middle distance and that too opens up a few further opportunities.”

HAYATE – 4th career win – Cambridge 15th May 2024 – Opie Bosson aboard

A winner on debut in May 2022, Hayate has been a consistent performer and recorded her fourth victory for her owners in the Fortuna Hayate Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin).

“They were similar sorts of rides,” said John Galvin (who was on course to witness the victory), commenting on the piloting by Bosson of the two stablemates in succession. “He bided his time, got them off the rail at the right time and they both won well. Hayate raced last week at Matamata and while she disappointed, the track was probably a bit sticky for her and her trackwork leading into that race had been very strong, so I think it was a clever decision by Mark Walker to back her up a week later, given that she was going to drop in grade and also get up in trip. We now know she can run the 2000 metres and she certainly wasn’t stopping. It was a lovely win and now she’ll be back up in grade, of course. She’s always given us the signal that she’s been looking for more ground and, finally, we’ve managed to get her there. She’s a five-year-old now, but she’s very sound and now that she’s up in trip there is bound to be a few more wins in her as well. She’s quite adept on the Polytrack, so that will provide more opportunities. While she likes sting out of the tracks, she doesn’t like it too heavy. And the Polytrack, as we know, suits those sorts of horses that aren’t necessarily firm track horses but also don’t like it heavy, either.”

Raced by the Fortuna Hayate Syndicate, an Ownership Group of 60 individuals, Hayate was acquired for $80,000 by Te Akau principal David Ellis and Fortuna Racing at the 2020 Karaka Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Mapperley Stud.

Hayate was strapped by Cooper Stumbles.

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Fortuna readers

Last week two of our three horses at value ran in the money and both were game defeat but just found one better on the day.
Mind you, the early bird place prices weren’t too bad!
Let’s get onto this weekend:

R7 Te Rapa : Francee

Forget her last run on this track when she copped a serious check nearing the 800m and a few strides later she was on heels when the pace slightly slackened. Despite all this she was the third quickest over the last 400 and 200 when finishing only 11th.
I’m expecting a big form reversal and the odds will be good enough to go top 4.

R4 Trentham: Dresse’ Par Joli

Michael McNab will take her back from a wide draw but she will be attacking the line if her first three runs are anything to go by.
She looks very promising.
I notice she’s part of the TAB betting surge option and the $4.50 looks very inviting.
In saying that I’ll be playing the insurance line of $1.75 as a place.

R3 Te Rapa
I’m opting for a quinella option on two who I think are both on the cusp of a win, Acquarello and Silver Javelin.
We had the former as one to follow last time it raced here and it was just beaten. It’s ideally suited in this race and I see Opie is booked to ride.
I’m keen also on Silver Javelin.
It’s another who winds up better than most in the final sections of its races. She’s second up and she won second up on her last preparation. In her limited racing she boast a placing behind the talented Pour the Wine. I’ll be backing both individually and strategically in relation to their respective odds but I won’t be ignoring the quinella either.

Ps we have two weeks of the month remaining but anyone interested in locking in the subscription for the rest of the season (to 31 July) at $200 ( gst inclusive) drop me an email at dcoppins@xtra.co.nz and I’ll pass all relevant details. You will be up and running immediately.

Ps extra: our Melbourne Cup tour is filling fast – 50 already booked. Let me know if you’re keen on joining us and again you can make contact via email to me and I’ll pass on your details to our tour brokers for immediate discussions.

Good punting!

Million Dollar Maiden Series Boost for Karaka Millions

Karaka Millions riches are set to be amplified next season, with horses eligible for the lucrative NZB Karaka Millions Series racing for an additional $1m in bonuses. In an exciting new initiative, NZB and NZTR, generously supported by Entain, are delighted to announce the Karaka Millions Mega Maiden Series, which will see $1m in bonuses up for grabs across 40 maiden races each season, for the next three years.

Comprised of 40 non-Saturday maiden races located throughout New Zealand, a $25,000 bonus will be struck if a Karaka Millions eligible horse, three years or older, wins. The winning owner will take home $20,000 and the successful trainer $5,000.

NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook said NZB has been wanting to see more of its sales graduates reap the benefits of the Karaka Millions Series for some time. “By hosting a $1m maiden series over 40 races, that goal will be well and truly satisfied,” he said. “I’d like to thank Bruce Sharrock, Cameron George and the NZTR Board for their continued support of NZB and the Karaka Millions Series. ”Because of NZTR’s financial contribution, we were able to raise the TAB Karaka Millions 3YO to $1.5m this year which in turn led to a much larger uptake in nominations. As a result of that we are now able to introduce this new maiden series, which will get to the grass roots of racing in this country. I’d also like to thank Dean Shannon, Lachlan Fitt, Cameron Rodger and their wider team, whose contribution to this new initiative underscores Entain’s desire to see our industry thrive at every level.”

NZTR will determine which 40 maiden races will feature in the 24/25 season Series, which will run from September to May of each racing year. The selected races will be announced next week with NZTR Chief Executive Officer Bruce Sharrock pleased to see additional bonuses elevate the New Zealand racing product across the board.

“NZTR is proud to be working with NZB and Entain to bring an additional million dollars in bonus funding to benefit owners and trainers across the regions,” he said. “Following on from other collaborations recently, this is yet another initiative to encourage people to breed, purchase and race horses in New Zealand.”

In 2023 Entain partnered with NZB as naming sponsor of the TAB Karaka Millions Twilight Meeting; the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m). Entain’s additional support of the Karaka Millions Mega Maiden Series further strengthens that partnership and signals their confidence in the lucrative Karaka Millions Series.

“This is a great initiative that we envisage will boost field sizes across the country,” Entain Australia and New Zealand Managing Director – New Zealand, Cameron Rodger said. “Having $25,000 worth of bonuses to chase in a maiden race will undoubtedly encourage Kiwi owners and trainers to keep striving for that maiden win. This series, as well as series like the Entain NZB Insurance Pearl Series, means there are more bonus opportunities for more horses in New Zealand than ever before.”

Here is what Des has to say this week

Greetings John and the Team at Fortuna

A quick recap on last week when two of our three to follow ran in the money and both were at even money at press time so it wasn’t all bad.
Here are my three to follow for this weekend.

New Plymouth r2 Raziah

After watching it run at Counties  it didn’t seem as comfortable as it did in the trial at Taupo. I might be wrong but I reckon it wasn’t as happy on the right handed track. Back left handed this week don’t be surprised to see a complete form reversal.
We should get a price!

Aljay Rotorua Cup r5

I think this former NZ cup winner can win another cup on Saturday.
He was game in defeat in a slowly run race last time and it’s been a while since he’s carried just 55.5kgs.
Kevin Myers has been coming to Rotorua and reaping rewards for years but unbelievably the 34-start Aljay  has never raced there.
He’s as tough as teak is Aljay and the writing is on the wall that he’s poised for the big test, irrespective whether the track is wet or holding!
He’s 3rd up and he’s won twice in this state in the past.
I think his odds will be around 7 or 8 to one!

Winexpress r3 Rotorua

After watching this bloke’s trial at Tauranga in March I expected a big run first up at Rotorua a few weeks later but it disappointed slightly.
I say, slightly, because after being restrained to the rear it copped a check or two in the running which kept him too far off the pace.
I feel he can show vast improvement this weekend. He is second up and he normally wins third up but he’s had two trials and he should be pretty much spot on!!
Once again the odds will be well into double figures.

Special Offer for Fortuna readers:

As we are over one week into May I’m pleased to offer my 3 month sub for a $40 discount of just $200 (gst inclusive).
Even though my dear mum  is no longer here ( and maybe yours isn’t either) let’s call it a Mothers Day gift in celebration of Sunday.
The sub will take you right to the end of the racing season, July 31.
Simply email me at dcoppins@xtra.co.nz and all will be revealed!
Good punting!

LEADERBOARD scores impressive Hurdles win at the iconic Warrnambool Carnival

Improved on his last start jumps assignment, Leaderboard (9 g Street Cry – Flower Fairy, by Dynaformer) won the $50,000 Maiden Hurdle (3200m) on the first day of the Warrnambool Carnival in Victoria.

Owned by Fortuna Leaderboard Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), Leaderboard was purchased by Hubie De Burgh and Fortuna Racing in October 2018 at the Tattersalls Sale in U.K., and the Wellington Cup (Gr. 3, 3200m) winner of last year, with eight wins, now has earnings over $400,000.

Unpressured to close the margin for fourth in a trial on 14 March at Taupo, Leaderboard was given a hurdle trial on 3 April after arriving in the Te Akau Stables at Cranbourne (Victoria), and jumped well finishing second when resuming in the Maiden Hurdle (3200m) on 14 April at Pakenham. Ridden again by former New Zealand Champion Jumps Jockey of the Year Aaron Kuru, Leaderboard was beautifully spotted in fourth, never missed a beat with a fine display of jumping, and after putting it to race favourite Irish Butterfly (O’Reilly) at the 600m he proceeded to draw clear over the last hurdle at the 400m for an easy win by three and three-quarter lengths.

“It will be a huge thrill for Mark (Walker), it’s his first runner at the Warrnambool Carnival and his first winner,” Kuru said.“We’re all extremely proud what he and the Te Akau team have done over here, so congratulations. I thought we had a kind time throughout the race and we were going pretty steady. I knew I had a good galloper underneath me and his jumping was really good today. I had a lot in reserve, but he’s a bit tricky this horse and can pull up if he hits the front too soon. I was in front a long way from home and hoping I could get him across the line but he’s such a good galloper and I knew I just had to use that to my strengths. Fair play to the horse, he’s done a great job today.”

In the race sponsored by Choices Flooring Warrnambool, Leaderboard, who won a hurdle trial before his debut in role last season and had a good record at two miles, ran 3200m in 3:46.2 on Soft6 footing and drifted in betting to pay $6.40 & $1.70 on the NZ TAB tote.

“It’s a great thrill to win with our first runner at the Warrnambool Carnival, and John & Jessica (Galvin) and their owners are terrific supporters of the stable,” Walker said. “He’s been a great old horse, to win a Wellington Cup and now a Maiden Hurdle at such a prestigious carnival. He’s got a very bright future in the jumps role and it’s a great thrill to have won the race. I’ve always loved jumps racing and hopefully it can continue to be well supported in New Zealand.”

At the time of Leaderboard’s purchase, John Galvin said: “I asked (bloodstock agent) Hubie de Burgh to find a European bred stayer that had a typical pedigree and  type that could turn into a cups horse down here (New Zealand). So, he went to the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale and picked him out. We had a budget of 70 to 80,000 Guineas and we got him for 75,000.”

“Leaderboard” – Warrnambool Victory – 30th April 2024

On course soaking up the unique atmosphere that Warrnambool offers, Galvin said:There are over 70 owners in this horse, but I’m the only man standing here today. My first time to Warrnambool and it’s a fantastic carnival, so it’s a pleasure to be here. We had a fair degree of confidence today. He’s a lovely galloper and jumper and he’ll get better over the bigger jumps, I think. So today was a wee bit of a test, but he took no prisoners out there. It’s always good when you leg-up Aaron (Kuru), you always know you have got a good chance.”

Asked about Melody Belle (Commands), who also raced in the Fortuna colours, and set a NZ domestic record of 14 Group One wins, Galvin said: “She was the horse of a lifetime, really, and while Leaderboard is in a different category, it’s still such a big thrill to win over here on such an iconic race day and his extensive ownership group love him to bits.  Mark  loves his jumpers and will also be pretty excited about this – Mark and Sam Bergerson and Ben Gleeson at Cranbourne have just handled him so well and he is a huge favourite around the Stable”

Leaderboard’s sire Street Cry (Machiavellian) also left Winx, world record holder of 25 Group One races, Champion US mare Zenyatta, Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, and Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, so stamina runs in the blood and Leaderboard has his share.

Leaderboard became the fifth winner for  Fortuna Racing in the past 17 days, following Malborough Bay (Darci Brahma) last Saturday at Te Rapa in addition to previous wins by Star Shadow, Sailing Away and Ragamuffin – he is raced by the Fortuna Leaderboard Syndicate, an ownership Group of 73 individuals, 72 NZ based and 1 based in the Northern Territory, Australia

Leaderboard was strapped by Hailey Morton.

Fortuna Galloper MALBOROUGH BAY victorious at Te Rapa 27th April 2024

Capping a day of terrific racing at Te Rapa, the Fortuna galloper Malborough Bay (4 g Darci Brahma – Spin ‘N Grin, by Spinning World) won the $35,000 Maneline Rating 65 1400 metres on Saturday. After producing a good effort for second in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 27 March at Matamata, Malborough Bay struck conditions beyond him when footing downgraded to Heavy10 in Rating 65 1400 metres on 13 April at Otaki, but bounced back at Te Rapa under a positive ride by Craig Grylls. Beginning well from barrier three to lead at a solid clip, Malborough Bay was joined to his inside by Don Pauly (Satono Aladdin) at the 400m and the pair set down to a home straight battle that saw them separated by only a nose at the finish with Malborough Bay prevailing.

On footing that remained Soft6 throughout the programme, and perfect for what Malborough Bay has shown to prefer, he ran 1400 metres in 1:25.4, last 600m in 35.5 (approx.), and paid handsomely ($16.60 & $4.90) on the NZ TAB tote.

“It was a lovely ride by Craig Grylls and a terrific effort by Malborough Bay to hold the other horse off in a close finish,” said Mark Walker, who trains him with Sam Bergerson, Mark watching the race from Morphetville in South Australia where he was overseeing a small team of Te Akau trained runners. “We love it when the big hurdles are back up at Matamata and he schooled well over them during the week which could go some way to turning his form around today. He will now look to head back to Te Rapa in three weeks time. And well done to John Galvin and his Fortuna ownership Group – they have had a wonderful run of success over the past couple of weeks”

MALBOROUGH BAY – 3rd career win – Te Rapa 27th April 2024 – Craig Grylls aboard

From a family that Te Akau and Fortuna have a great affinity with, Malborough Bay won on debut as a two-year-old, placed in the War Decree Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) at three, and continues to race well after winning earlier this season at Matamata. Bred by Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM and Glenn & Cathie Holmes, Malborough Bay is owned by a Fortuna Racing  Syndicate, with the Fortuna Team on a roll of four wins in the past fortnight.

Sponsor Rohan Kamo from the race sponsors Maneline said: “Congratulations John (Galvin) to you and the owners of Malborough Bay. It’s lovely that we can sponsor and support the racing industry, because without it we don’t function. We supply horse shoes and farrier tools and it’s nice to get all the horses around to the start feeling sound and happy.”

In reply, on behalf of the owners, John Galvin said: “Shane Thompson, who shares in the ownership of Malborough Bay reminded me that the finish was very similar to the win by Melody Belle over Julius in the Foxbridge Plate here in 2018, where, like today, we had to wait for the Judge’s call. Malborough Bay can a bit hard to catch, but that is now his 3rd third career win and I think the winning of the race was at the start when Craig (Grylls) got him out first and as we know Craig is a lovely strong rider. We have a  big group of owners in  this horse and a few were on course today including Ian Upson who has had over 150 wins with Fortuna over the past 12 or 13 years, including 19 with Melody Belle, Shane Thomsen and his Mum, Marlene, who were also in Melody Belle,  Ollie & Hazel Lawrence have been in quite a few successful horses with us and Phil Graham who has had two wins with us in six days, Ragamuffin being the other one. He’s a well loved horse and will be back to Rating 75 now, so that will be a further challenge for him. Well done to Mark and Sam with how they have handled Malborough Bay since his last start – the bit of schooling over the hurdles they gave him made him very resolute today”

“Mark Walker trained the dam, Spin ‘n Grin, and she was very good,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM, who bought her for $65,000 at the 2003 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, and since purchased and bred progeny from the mare. “Spin ‘n Grin won the Eight Carat Classic (Gr. 2, 1600m) at only her fourth start, finished third a week later in the Royal Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m), and she was an unlucky second at her seventh start, in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m). Karyn (Fenton-Ellis MNZM) and Glenn & Cathie Holmes bred Malborough Bay and he’s another good winner for Fortuna Racing and their owners.”

Malborough Bay is raced by the Fortuna Malborough Bay Syndicate, an Ownership Group of 55 individuals from New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia. He was acquired from his Breeders Karyn Fenton-Ellis and Glenn/Cathie Holmes in a private sale in 2021

Malborough Bay was strapped by Kohen Collett.

Double Victory for the Fortuna runners last weekend

Following on from Star Shadows lovely win at Otaki the previous week, Fortuna runners managed to keep the resurgence going with Sailing Away breaking maidens at Riccarton on Saturday in the hands of Niranjan Palmer and then the next day at Hawera Ragamuffinrecording his third career win and his first in over two years, with Craig Grylls aboard

Prior to this winning streak we had gone 77 days without a winner with a frustrating run of seconds, thirds and fourths, so it was good to record the three winners in an eight day period – as the old saying goes “the night is darkest before the dawn” – see the website stories below on both of these successes

Fortuna 3yo Gelding SAILING AWAY wins for the first time at Riccarton 20th April

Sailing Away (3 g Merchant Navy – Anchovy, by Galileo) got the day off on a bright note for Te Akau trainersMark Walker & Sam Bergerson  when winning the  $20,000 Maiden 1400 metres on Saturday at Riccarton. Freshened following three starts in his first campaign, which included a third over 1200 metres at Timaru, Sailing Away finished fifth from a handy position when resuming in the Maiden 1200 metres on 4 April at Ashburton, and took the necessary improvement.

Beginning well from barrier one to idle along in the trail, Sailing Away received a clear passage near the rail and kept mustering under the urgings of stable apprentice Niranjan Parmar, who recorded his 20th win for Te Akau this season and 10th at Riccarton. In the race named Riccarton Park Function Centre, Sailing Away ran 1400 metres in 1:24.3, last 600m in 34.7 (approx.), and shortened in betting as race favourite to pay $3.80 & $1.70 on the NZ TAB tote.

Click HERE to see the race replay

Present on course, co – Trainer Mark Walker said: “It was a nice ride of Parmar’s to have him travelling so well in the trail and it’s always good to get a winner for John Galvin and Fortuna Racing. Sailing Away been a slower maturing horse than initially expected, but he is out of Galileo mare so he should improve with more time and distance. He’s getting that little bit stronger now, that’s the key to him, and Hunter (Durrant) and the team at the Te Akau stables down here at Riccarton have done a really good job with him.

SAILING AWAY breaks Maidens – Riccarton Park 20th April – Niranjan Parmar aboard

It was the second victory in a week for the Te Akau/Fortuna Racing partnership, after two-year-old stable-mate Star Shadow (Reliable Man) scored on debut in the 2YO 1300 metres last Saturday at Otaki.

Syndicate manager, John Galvin, watching the race from his Hamilton home, was well satisfied after the race “David and Mark  picked this horse out of the 2022 Karaka yearling sale, believing that on physical type he would make a lovely two year-old and he certainly suggested that in his initial preparation, but then had a real growth spurt and we had to abandon our two year-old plans for him and wait for more physical development. He had three starts in the December/January period of this season but then, believing he needed a break,  he was given a freshen up and his resuming run at Ashurton recently indicated that he was certainly knocking on the door. His pedigree page indicates that he may well prosper over more ground and the way he won the race today would tend to confirm that as well. Well done to Parmar for a well judged ride and congratulations to Mark and Sam and their team for exhibiting so much patience in the way they have handled Sailing Away.”

Sailing Away stems from a rather phenomenal international family, with third dam Love Me True (Kingmambo), leaving five-time Group One winning stallion Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill), a European Champion that won from 1400m – 2400m, Champion Three-Year-Old and The Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) winner Ruler Of The World (Galileo), along with Group winners Norway (Galileo) and Annus Mirabilis (Montjeu).

Owned by the Fortuna Sailing Away Syndicate – an Ownership group of 56 individuals, he was purchased by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing for $60,000, from the draft of Cambridge Stud, at the Karaka 2022 Book 1 Sale.

Sailing Away was strapped by Naomi Warrander.

RAGAMUFFIN salutes the judge at Hawera 21st April for his 3rd career win

RAGAMUFFIN brought a lot of joy to his large ownership group when taking out the Johnny Neil Ltd Rating 60 1600 meter event at Hawera 21st of April in the hands of jockey Craig Grylls – it had been a long time between drinks for Ragamuffin, who had not greeted the judge since March 30th 2022. In his early career he had won twice from his first four starts, but subsequently had had a long period away from the track after post surgery complications and had been to the races 15 more times before producing his third career win at Hawera.  Drawn midfield Grylls bounced Ragamuffin away from the gates nicely, using up a bit of petrol to get to the lead and over to the rail, but then was happy to hand up the lead to You’ll Do and was content to lob along in second place – challenging on the turn Ragamuffin hit the lead at the top of the straight and was a dominant winner, going to the line with a two length margin in a time of 137.12 on a Good 4 surface and returned $2.80 and $1.40 on the New Zealand TAB

Click HERE to see the race replay

Ragamuffin was having his second start from the stable of Robbie Patterson, after having previously been trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson of Te Akau Racing Stables. Patterson was on course and was naturally pleased to get a quick result for his new charge. “It’s always a bit of a challenge to take on a new horse from another stable and to get to know its personality and quirks, but Ragamuffin has settled in very nicely with us, produced a good effort over 1400m at Woodville recently to run third and we figured that stepping up to 1600 would be ideal and the addition of the blinkers seemed to work very well also – he didn’t beat much today but clearly he is a galloper with some good ability and I think he could be in for a profitable late autumn/winter of racing.  Congratulations to John Galvin and his Fortuna team of owners – Ragamuffin is the first horse we have trained for John and it’s great to get a result for the Fortuna team”

“Ragamuffin” – Hawera 21st April 2024 – Craig Grylls aboard

Savouring the 3rd individual winner in eight days for his Fortuna Team, John Galvin was on course at Hawera to witness Ragamuffin’s win along with a small number of his large ownership group and was a very happy man after the race “It was very satisfying to get this win today – Ragamuffin had showed quite a bit of ability in his early career, but in April 2022 he required some knee surgery, developed some complications from that, was away from racing for over 12 months and since his return it has taken him a while to get back to form, but his previous two starts leading into this race were very good and today he got the job done in stylish fashion for his ownership group. Well done to Robbie Patterson who has only had the horse for about three weeks – he’s got to know him very quickly and has done a great job with him – lovely ride by Craig Grylls, who as we know, is one of New Zealand leading jockeys and who has a fabulous strike rate riding for the Patterson stable. And well done to his ownership group who have been extremely patient over the last couple of years waiting for Ragamuffin to come back into form”

Owned by the Fortuna Ragamuffin Syndicate – an Ownership group of 37 individuals, Ragamuffin was purchased by David Ellis CNZM on behalf of Fortuna Racing for $80,000, from the draft of Lilywhites Lodge, at the NZ Bloodstock 2020 Ready To Run Sale

John to attend Warrnambool Carnival 30th April – 2nd May

Our grand stayer and former Wellington Cup winner Leaderboard is in Victoria to participate in the Victorian jumping season –  he will run on the first day of the famed three day Warrnambool carnival which starts on Tuesday, the 30th of April and ends on the 2nd of May. Monday morning John is on a plane to Melbourne and as well as visiting the Cranbourne stable he will attend the Warrnambool meeting and hopefully Leaderboard can salute the judge on the first day – he did run a very encouraging 3rd placing when making his Victorian hurdles debut a couple of weeks ago

Des Coppins – Guest Selector

Greetings John and the Fortuna Team

In a weekend where we commemorate the role of the armed forces and victims of all wars including equine heroes it’s always a very special time for racing enthusiasts in both NZ and Australia.
On reflection of last week we had two of our three runners that fronted with Pour the Wine running second with the quickest sectionals after a slow start for the first time in her life and Wiseman’s Diva looking the winner at the furlong but sadly not when it mattered!!
(Our third selection St Bathans gets another chance at Te Rapa in the transferred from Ellerslie Manco Easter Mile.)

Three to follow at Te Rapa:

(1) Karman Lane in race 5.
She’s talented and she comes out of a solid group one run where she displayed the quickest last 800m. Attacking the line is akin to her racing style. She’s been the quickest home from the 800m in her last three races.
(2) Tomodachi in race one.
She’s been outstanding in her last two runs. Also she was unlucky on debut. Her form should read three from three. She’s up in class but I’m picking she’s a group one horse in waiting!!
(3) Irish Legacy in race 5.
She’s another who I feel who within the next 12 months will be winning her share of black type races. She clearly beat the hat trick hero Billy Lincoln in race one before the big step into group 3 when desperately unlucky for third behind the classy Certainly and company and didn’t get the rub of the green in the Guineas at Trentham after being slow away in a stop start affair.

Stop Press:
