On the lookout for a genuine Staying Type (preferably with a strong UK/Irish pedigree) – Lot 6, the 5yo Gelding, LEGEND OF KINGS, who was offered on the Inglis Digital Site by an Ownership Group with strong links to the Chris Waller Stable appealed to us as we went through the Catalogue – he had been purchased as a Yearling in the UK for 50,000 Guineas and given an initial preparation there and won at his 4th start over 12.5 Furlongs (2500m approx). Believing that they had acquired a type who could be competitive over distance in Metropolitan Racing in Sydney or Melbourne, they shipped him downunder and after two trials Jan/Feb 2025, he made his Australian debut in NSW in February and ran two 3rds at his 3rd and 4th starts over 2100 and 2200
Then spelled, he resumed at 1500m which was too short for him and then had three further races at the 2100/2200 trips and finished close up in all three starts, never beaten more than 3.6 lengths. At his last start on 14th November, he ran 3rd over 2200m, beaten just 2.6 lengths
At that point, forming the conclusion that this horse was not going to be competitive in Metro Australian racing, his Ownership Group made the decision to move him on and this allowed us to conduct our usual due diligence on him – satisfied with his physical type and pedigree page and believing he would be an ideal type for NZ Racing, we had him fully vetted (passed with colours flying) and we were able to acquire him well within our budget

5yo Gelding Legend of Kings
(by Camelot out of Joshua’s Princess)
Physical Type
LEGEND OF KINGS ticks a lot of boxes physically – a typical European bred type, he has good size (16.3 hands) and tips the scales at 485 kgs, however he impressed us with his athleticism and galloping action and the view we formed is that he still has a bit of maturity to come. Our inspecting Vet, Dr Rob Hansen, was very thorough and passed him with flying colours after conducting all of the usual physical tests, x rays and scans and he was a Grade One on the laryngeal scope, which is perfect. Rob also commented on his feet, saying that he had one of the best sets of feet he had ever seen.
Pedigree
LEGEND OF KINGS has an outstanding pedigree page – being by the very successful Stallion at Stud, Camelot, a winner of the Epsom Derby. Camelot is now the Sire of 885 Mares, of which 569 are winners, including 59 Stakes winners.
His Dam, Joshua’s Princess, a daughter of the mighty Danehill, has been an outstanding broodmare – she is the dam of ten horses to the races, nine of whom have been winners, including the Multiple Group winner, Mutamakina, who won 6 times in the USA and France, from 2000m to 2400m, including wins at Group One, Group 2 and Group 3 level
Te Akau’s Trainer Mark Walker was instrumental in picking this Gelding out of the sale – he comments as follows
“John as you know, we set about trying to find a lovely staying type suitable for NZ Racing and Legend of Kings certainly ticked a lot of boxes for me as I conducted research on him – he certainly has the right sort of pedigree for a genuine staying type and physically, he is a lovely horse, very athletic and possessing a great walk. Showing early promise in the UK, he didn’t quite live up to his ownership groups expectations in the very competitive Australian scene, but I think he will be perfect for NZ racing, particularly at trips of 2400m plus. I also think he has a bit of physical strengthening to come and so we are looking forward to getting him to New Zealand where I am sure he can be very competitive in the major staying events.”
John Galvin says
“We have had a lot of success in the past, buying “tried horses” out of the Inglis Digital Sale, particularly for the Singapore market, but we also had success in NZ with Mohawk Brave and Navalha, both Inglis Digital Sale graduates. With the upcoming retirement of Leaderboard, who won races like the Wellington Cup and the NZ St Leger for us, we were keen to acquire a similar type with a strong European bred pedigree and this fellow fits that bill. We did not pay a lot for LEGENDS OF KINGS, indeed the last time we paid this amount of money for a horse out of and Inglis Digital sale, that being ENTERTAINER, he went on to win 8 races in Singapore. In full work at Matamata since Dec 18th, he will have his first trial in NZ at Ellerslie on 10th February and then be off to the races after that – not long to wait”
Syndication paperwork has been finalised – all up, including purchase price, NZ GST on entry to NZ, promoters fees, airfreight to NZ, insurance to 31 Jan 2027 and working capital of just under $11k, the total capitalised value is NZ$70k
