Fortuna Racing secures 2yo Colt by Snitzel (Lot 204) at the NZ Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale
On a day where the quality lots were hard to acquire due to intense competition from a strong international buying bench, Fortuna Racing managed to secure a Colt by the late great Champion Stallion, Snitzel, out of the (Australian) two time winning and Stakes places Zabeel mare, Zasorceress. Not on the Fortuna list to start with (only because we thought he would be beyond our budget), we noticed had had been passed in @ $180k – Mark Walker followed up with the Vendor and negotiating hard, we managed to secure him for $165k, which, given Snitzel’s Stud Fee, which would have been in the vicinity of A$220k at the time of the mating of this Colt, represents great value

Two Year Old Colt by Snitzel out of Zasorceress
Snitzel needs little introduction of course, a top class racehorse, he became one of Australia’s greatest ever Stallions, Champion Sire in Australia 4 times, siring 1289 winners from 1637 mares including 23 Group One winners among 161 Stakes winners overall. And also a great sire of Sires, with his sons including the successful Stallions Russian Revolution, Shamus Award, Trapeze Artist and the up and comers In The Congo and Switzerland
Our new Colt’s dam, Zasorceress, is by Zabeel, undoubtedly one of NZ’s greatest ever Stallions and a huge Sire of successful Broodmares as well. Zasorceress was no slouch, winning twice in Melbourne @ 1600m and 1800m and ran 2nd and 3rd in two Group 3 races – she is also a successful broodmare with her three foals to race all being winners, including the Stakes winning, Zaszou (by Zoustar) who won 5 times (three in succession) in Australia
Finally on the pedigree front, our Colt boasts the Damsire lines of Zabeel, Encosta De Lago, Green Desert and Habitat over 4 generations
Te Akau Racing Principal, David Ellis, whom I have been working with since 2003, buying many, many horses together over the years, commented as follows about this lovely Colt
“Great buying at the sale John with this Colt – a lovely athletic type, he has all of the physical attributes that I love to see in a horse – plus what I really liked was his pedigree page, out of a Zabeel mare who in turn is out of an Encosta de Lago Mare, two of the greatest broodmare sires we will see in our lifetimes. Looking ahead, I believe this Colt will come to the fore in the Spring of 2026 and would be the perfect candidate for the NZ 2000 Guineas run at Riccarton in November, a race Te Akau has won many times (including with a Fortuna horse, Tell A Tale) and if he were to win that race as a Colt, he would have immense value as a Stallion prospect”
Notable David’s comments here about Stallion prospects, because when Tell A Tale won the 2000 Guineas in 2008, he was a gelding, but Darci Brahma, who won in 2005, was a Colt – I was lucky enough to have a 5% share in Darci and when he retired from racing, he was syndicated as a Stallion for $10m!!! – We won’t get ahead of ourselves as it is always a challenge to keep a young Colt as a Colt, but he is certainly a chance.
Mark Walker was instrumental in picking this Colt out of the sale – he comments as follows
“John, when conducting pre-sale inspections I was very impressed with the athleticism of this Colt, however I also noted his foaling date was 20th of November and therefore took into account that he still had significant physical development to take place – therefore when I watched his pre sale breeze up video I was really impressed with his action given that he was still a relatively young horse. I also spoke with Ryan Elliott, who was his ridder in that breeze up and Ryan reported to me that he had galloped this Colt at Taupo a couple of weeks before the breeze up and how he had made significant improvement in that time. I certainly think this Colt is going to show huge physical development in the next three or four months and develop into a lovely three-year-old, so what we will do now is give him three weeks in the paddock and then commence a stable preparation which will lead to a jump out and a trial or two in the late summer/early autumn and, all going well, l we may be able to give him a start or two as a two-year-old before really focusing on his three-year-old year with a definite plan to target the New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton in November”

Syndication paperwork has being finalised – all up, including purchase price, GST, promoters fees, insurance to 31 Jan 2027 and working capital of just under $12k, the total capitalised value is NZ$240k
