He produced a strong last start winning performance Class 5 1100m Poly two weeks ago – up in grade, up in trip and has a tricky draw to contend with this time. Has very good gate speed and an in form rider aboard and just 52kgs on his back. Luck in running and a heady ride can see him feature in the finish here

Fortuna Racing’s five year old Racemare HAYATE records her 3rd career win at Cambridge 16th August

Given a perfect trip by Te Akau apprentice Niranjan Parmar, Hayate (5 m Maurice – Vamoose) won the $17,000 Cambridge Equine Hospital Rating 60 1550 metre event on 16 August at Cambridge (poly-track). Finding heavy ground too testing in the depths of winter, most recently over 1560 metres on 5 July at Rotorua, Hayate had a break of 42 days between runs and displayed plenty of fresh vigour in her performance. Drawn the ace barrier, Hayate was advantaged immediately when two horses ahead of her entered into a tussle for the lead while she sat third. The race still looked open when she ranged among a group turning for home, but the persuasion of Parmar saw her draw clear over the final furlong to score easily. Winning by two and a quarter lengths, Hayate paid $4.90 & $2.30 on the NZ TAB tote.

HAYATE – 3rd career win – Cambridge 16th August 2023

 “It was a lovely win and she was very well ridden by Parmar,” said co-trainer Mark Walker, who with Sam Bergerson celebrated their first win together with Cote de Beaune on 2 August at Cambridge. “It gives us more options with her going forward, knowing that she can handle the synthetic track at race tempo and I think she’s a mare that should also cope getting over more distance, especially being that little bit stronger in this preparation. Well done to John Galvin and his Fortuna Racing team – I trained my first winner for John (Kapsdan) in September 2003 so we have had a wonderful 20 year association with many, many winners”

A winner on debut in May 2022, Hayate recorded her third victory for owners in the Fortuna Hayate Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), having been purchased for $80,000 by Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM on behalf of Fortuna Racing at the 2020 Karaka Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Mapperley Stud.

Fortuna Director John Galvin was on course, along with several Members of the Ownership Group, to witness his charge’s victory and commented post race “The race plan from the inside draw was to try and hold the rail if she could, but obviously the first two were pretty keen to get on with the job and Parmar did the right thing, he eased, got her nicely settled, had her off the rail before the (home) turn, was in a position to challenge and she was too strong for them.

“She looked ready to race well and Rating 60 does suit her. She’s won in the same grade before, was just looking for a decent surface and the synthetic provided that. The freshen up after her last start and blinkers off today were the training master strokes, blinkers off allowing her to relax a bit more and she got the job done really well”

Raced by the Fortuna Hayate Syndicate, an Ownership Group of 60 individuals, Hayate was acquired for $80,000 by Te Akau principal David Ellis on behalf of Fortuna Racing at the 2020 Karaka Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Mapperley Stud.

NZB Insurance Pearl Series Revamped by Entain & NZTR and NZ Bloodstock

  • Payments have been doubled and no increase to Nomination Fee
  • New $100k Pearl Bonus Series Final to be run in the Autumn

Adding to the list of further boosts Entain and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing have made to New Zealand’s racing industry in recent months is the delivery of enhanced Pearl Series bonuses for fillies and mares. Entain, NZTR and NZB Insurance have collaborated to provide continued support of fillies and mares racing in New Zealand, with all current Pearl Series bonuses now doubled for the 2023-24 racing season.
The refreshed Series will be renamed the Entain – NZB Insurance Pearl Series and will see a boost in bonuses paid out to Pearl Series nominated horses. The winning Owner will receive a $20,000 bonus, increasing from $10,000, as well as the winning Trainer and Nominator receiving $1,000 each, a $500 increase respectively. In addition to this, the Owner of the filly or mare that places second will receive a $4,000 bonus (increased from $2,000), with the Owner of the third placegetter earning a $2,000 bonus (increased from $1,000).
Adding further appeal is the creation of a $100,000 Pearl Series Bonus Final to be run in Autumn. The Final will be open to Pearl Series registered horses only, up to five years of age. Southern and Central-based horses who make the Final will also be provided with travel subsidies to compete. Conditions for the $100,000 Pearl Series Bonus Final are still being finalised and more information about the race will be released shortly.

NZTR CEO Bruce Sharrock confirmed this new initiative, “This is a great enhancement for racing and its Owners. The boost in bonuses will apply to all fillies and mares currently entered in the race Series, as well as new nominees wishing to enter for this coming season. Nominations will be reopened until the end of August. Promoting the participation of fillies and mares racing carries advantages not only to total field sizes but also bringing benefits to owners with increased stakes and in turn enhancing the race record of their filly or mare as a valuable breeding proposition. A number of high-profile New Zealand Thoroughbred mares have graduated from the Pearl Series including Group One winners Avantage, Belle En Rouge, Levante, Melody Belle and Probabeel. We would like to thank Entain for their continued innovation in New Zealand racing, as well as NZB Insurance who have now sponsored the Pearl Series for over a decade,” he said.

The Pearl Series boost comes after a full review of the bonus structure was completed ahead of the 2022-23 season, which saw Pearl Series bonuses for registered fillies and mares extend to those who finished second and third in Pearl Series races. It was also extended to include five-year-old race mares which was welcomed by the racing community.

Jim Bruford of NZB Insurance commented on the significant boost to the company’s 11-year Pearl Series sponsorship. “We were a major supporter of the Pearl Series when it was initially developed in partnership with the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association because of the benefit it gave to fillies’ racing in New Zealand. We have been sponsoring the Series for 11 years, proving that Pearl Series races are hotly contested events, drawing maximum fields and developing good betting revenue, giving fillies an opportunity to race to assist us in developing our breeding stock. Throughout the 11 years of the Pearl Series, NZB Insurance has received remarkable support from the industry in recognising our initial sponsorship. Having Entain on board to further strengthen the Pearl Series in the coming years is a tremendous boost to our philosophy of supporting fillies racing in New Zealand,” Bruford said.

Administered by the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, 2023 nominations have now been reopened and will close on Thursday 31 August. There will be no increase in nomination costs, with the entry fee remaining at $1,500 + GST.

What you need to know about the Pearl Series enhancements:

  • Up to 100 races per season
  • Each race now carries a total $26,000 stake bonus
  • Trainer and Nominator bonuses have also doubled, now at $1,000 each
  • $100,000 Series Final Race Bonus, run in the Autumn and a travel subsidy for Southern and Central District horses who qualify
  • No increase in nomination costs

Ruakaka fields a little thin on depth, hence mainly skinny odds on offer to build on last weeks boosted kitty. But small fruit are often the sweetest!!

Two winners stand out as “class specials”

Race 1 Malfy Rose [ $3.50]  and Race 5  Trobriand [ $2 ] both look winners – and a nice multi.

In Race 3 , former Hong Kong galloper, Wanderin Apache is getting on in age and has a good horses weight, but he has deserved it and should relish his trip to beach. At  $4.20/ $2 is each- way all -day from rails draw .He trialed nicely.

In Race 4 Rising Tide is debuting as a 4 year old but trialed nicely enough. He  has top jockey aboard and if he has inherited any of his parents [Darci Brahma and Sea Change] talent then he should deal to this maiden field. At $8 / $3 he looks each-way all-day !

Race 6 …skinny odds, but Chevron and Current Surge looks the likely Quinella.

Ruakaka, with rain forecast can throw a few curve balls so only risk half of last weeks profit.

And remember to bet with your shoelaces not your shoes !

KHAFEEF runs in the One win Hurdles event at Riccarton on Saturday 12th August – Race 1 @ 11.30am and will be ridden by Dean Parker. Strong Hurdles winner at Hawera in late April, he then fell in a Hurdles event at Hastings early June – had a couple of starts on the flat since then (including one on Riccarton synthetic last Wednesday where his saddle slipped). Very capable jumper who can go keen and is unpredictable as a result – is 2nd fave @ $3.60/$1.20 and can take this out if things go right for him

BEAU GESTE races in the Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton Saturday 12th August – Race 4 @1.12pm with Dean Parker to ride. Ran out of condition with 600m to go Sydenham Hurdles last week after traveling and jumping well – very capable jumper on his day but meets some more seasoned runners in this and may just need the run – tempting odds @$21/$3.60 though

Singapore – Sunday

KNIPPENBERG races in the Class 4 1200 Turf event – Race 7 @3pm Singapore time (7pm NZ Time) with Vlad Duric to ride from the outside barrier (11) – two wins and two seconds from 6 starts says it all for this lovely 4yo son of I Am Invincible. Was very strong for 2nd last start when resuming off a break. Has taken a lot of improvement and provided Duric can negotiate a sweet passage from the wide draw, he is right in this

Here is what the STC tipsters have to say about this race;

1st Pick: LIM’S STRAIGHT (3)
Gets a decent gate advantage over a few of his major opposition in this race. Has been super impressive since his return and well managed by Daniel Meagher, winning chance.
2nd Pick: KNIPPENBERG (1)
Carries the top weight in this weekends event which is a slight concern. Despite the big weight and wide gate, his class should take him a very long way in this event with Duric booked to ride.
3rd Pick: GALAXY BAR (10)
Hasn’t raced since his open maiden victory on the 2nd of July but has trialled since. Gets a super light weight for this weekend’s assignment against proven company, each way hope.
4th Pick: TRIBUTO (7)
Worked well during the week and a solid performance by him wouldn’t shock. Louis Beuzelin knows this horse well and can hopefully get the best out of him.

ENTERTAINER races in the Class 4 1100 Poly event – Race 12 @5.30pm Singapore time (9.30pm NZ Time) with Yusoff to ride from barrier 9 claiming 2kgs – has not won a race since September 2022 and has been mixing form of late – but has won eight times in his career, seven of those on this trip and surface – now back to Class 4m the first time he has raced in this grade for two years – is that the key? Needs a bit of luck from the draw but does have good gate speed and can feature in the finish here

1st Pick: ASIF (3)
Singapore debut for NSW galloper who was initially with Chris Waller. Two trials in the country have been solid, Nunes stays on for the race day start, respect.
2nd Pick: FADABOY (10)
Jamil sticks on this running claiming 4kg again which will see him have a featherweight once again. Last two starts have been super and the jump out to 1100m should only improve his chances to perform here.
3rd Pick: OPUNAKE (7)
Won immediately heading up to class 4 and confirmed that he is in great condition at the moment. Draws barrier 2 so expect him to roll forward from there and control from the front again, place hope.
4th Pick: ENTERTAINER (1)
Will appreciate the drop to 57kg here with the claiming rider on board. Back to class 4 should see him being super competitive this weekend, each way.

Fortuna Racing’s ELLIOT NESS records his 3rd career win in Singapore 6th August 2023

Six year old ELLIOT NESS (Written Tycoon – Walk with Attitude) lived up to his hot favourite billing when producing a strong winning effort to take out the Class 5 1100m Polytrack event at Singapore’s Kranji Racecourse 6th August. Ridden by Te Akau Racing Stable Apprentice, Fadzli Yusoff, Elliot Ness bounced away well from his No 2 Barrier and settled in 2nd place outside the leader. Always traveling well, Yusof kicked his mount clear after turning for home, establishing a winning break which he sustained to the line, finishing the race with a 3/4 length margin in a time of 1.04.99.

ELLIOT NESS had not greeted the judge since July 2022, but had spent most of the latter part of 2022 in rehab after undergoing knee surgery to remove a chip

Trainer, Donna Logan, was effusive in her praise of both horse and rider after the race. “That was a classy performance by Elliot Ness and he was given a great ride by Yusoff from his nice barrier draw. It was a great effort all round – well done to John Galvin of Fortuna Racing and his ownership team – John was up here in Singapore last week to see the Fortuna runner, Rocky, win and now they get another winner today.”

Lovely professional ride from Yusoff and full marks to Donna Logan and her team for having this horse in such great order.”

Trained by  Peter and Paul Snowden in Sydney, he trialed twice in May 2020 for a  4th and a 6th placing and after determining that his trial form indicated that he was not up to Stallion making ability plus the fact that he was very Colty and needed to gelded, he was put up for sale unreserved and John Galvin acquired  him  at the May 2020 Inglis Online Sale for just A$35,000. He has now won three times and had sixteen other prizemoney placing from 23 starts and has Stakes Earnings of just under S$150,000 for his Ownership Group consisting of 44 individuals from NZ, Australia and Hong Kong

Grand National Day has always fascinated me ……as a young Southern kid I watched in awe as southern horses such as No Offence, Koral, Enceeoh etc won the big steeples. Sadly no jumpers in the South now but wagering on the day may help sustain the day a little longer.

Hours of study resulted in me finding 3 x good bets with  a bit  of value. Maybe 10’s and 3’s.

The TAB has gone miserable on Berry The Cash in the Grand National Hurdles – Race 4,  posting odds of $4 –  just silly for its inexperience but he can feature

I’ve liked Southerner Prince Alby [Race 8] since he returned from Aussie. Yes he’s up against some in-form Northerners and his quote at $6/$2 , but surely he will be at least $10/$3 on the Tote come raceday. Each way all day.

Then in the last [ Race 10], I like the veteran Deels Done. Getting on in age, but he likes Riccarton in August and with 3kg off he in with a big Top 3 chance. The TAB has him at $13 and $4 , but should be more on the Tote !

Fortuna Racing’s ROCKY delivers another knockout blow in picking up his 3rd win in Singapore 30th July

ROCKY, the 4yo Gelding by El Roca out of Anthology (by Encosta de Lago), franked his recent good form with a strong win in the Class 4 1600m Polytrack event at Singapore’s Kranji racecourse 30th July with Singapore apprentice Nor Zyrul in the saddle. Drawn awkwardly in Barrier 7 with just a short run to the first bend, Zyrul had ROCKY away well from the start, was in a three wide position initially, but then managed to slot in one out from the rail in 5th place. Traveling well in the run, ROCKY was right in contention as the field turned for home, Zyrul balanced him up nicely and commenced a strong run down the middle of the track, hit the lead with 250 metres to go and went to the line clear by just under a length, delighting his small core of on course supporters including Fortuna Racing Principals, John and Jessica Galvin and syndicate Members Elly and Julia Capper from New Zealand and Australia and the local Derek Soh. ROCKY returned dividends of $10.40 to win and $3.30 the place.

Capping a phenomenal season of highlights and records for trainer Mark Walker and Te Akau Racing, Angels Wings (3yo Filly by Heroic Valour – Gowana, by More Than Ready) became the 200th winner for the stable this season with victory in the $14,000 Rating 65 1200 metres on 27 July at Awapuni (poly-track). A deserved Maiden winner three starts ago on the poly-track at Cambridge, Angel Wings was given time (29 days) since racing wide in the Pearl Series Rating 65 1300 metres on 28 June at Cambridge, and rated a top three chance from barrier three.

With Michael McNab aboard Angels Wings secured a lovely spot behind the leaders and once again McNab was pinpoint accurate to claim a last stride victory. “It’s never been done before, down towards the line, a bobber, but I reckon Mark Walker’s got 200 for the season,” said commentator Tony Lee. “What a brilliant effort, quite an incredible feat, this will be around for a long, long time.”

In the race sponsored by Aberdeen on Broadway, Angel Wings ran 1200 metres in 1:09.7 and paid $5.20 & $1.90 on the NZ TAB tote. “It was a really good win and another lovely ride of Michael’s,” Walker said. “She’s only going to get a bit bigger and stronger next season. It’s great to get that milestone of 200 wins in a season today, and to get another win for Fortuna Racing – John and Jessica Galvin, who run Fortuna Racing, are very good friends of everyone at Te Akau and its very thrilling to get the 200th with one of their horses.”

While preparing for her three-year-old season, Angel Wings caught the attention of new assistant trainer Nicole Shailer as having potential, which she has certainly shown in winning two of her last three starts.

“Angel Wings had a bit to do with a couple of hundred metres to go, but Michael (McNab) is riding in superb form and he just gets the best out of them in the closing stages – he just doesn’t give up,” said John Galvin, who with his wife Jessica, is combining a short vacation in Kuala Lumpur with racing commitments in Singapore 23rd and 30th July. “We’ve had a few milestone wins with Te Akau and it was great to get such a significant win for Mark – A Fortuna horse (Rio Fortune) was Mark’s first winner in Singapore, Jamie Richards first group win as a solo trainer was Melody Belle in the Foxbridge Plate and his last win in New Zealand as Te Akau trainer was Ragamuffin. Mark started training his first horses for me in 2002/03 season with the Group Two winner Kapsdan as well as Comical Ali, so it’s been a 21-year association, not just with Mark but with David and Karyn Ellis as well – we’ve had a great working relationship. We’ve had many winners in New Zealand before Mark went to Singapore; horses like Kapsdan, Darci Brahma, Tell A Tale, and had about 80-90 winners trained by Mark during his stint in Singapore. Now we’re going well together with Mark back in New Zealand and we are also looking forward to the opportunities that present in the new Te Akau stable at Cranbourne in Melbourne.”

Angel Wings was purchased by David Ellis and Andrew Williams Bloodstock for A$100,000 on behalf of Fortuna Racing, from the draft of KBL Thoroughbreds, at the 2021 Gold Coast National Yearling Sale. She was purchased just a few days after the Fortuna Racing dual Horse of The Year and now Thoroughbred Hall of Famer, Melody Belle, was sold for A$2.6m and many of the Melody Belle owners are also owners in Angels Wings

Fortuna 2yo RHETT BUTLER to contest the Group 3 Golden Horseshoe in Singapore 23rd July
 
Exciting time for connections of 2yo RHETT BUTLER (Charm Spirit – Thurlow) as he takes his place in the field of this prestigious event for 2yo’s at Singapore’s Kranji Racecourse. Acuired by Fortuna Racing and Donna Logan for A$80k at the Inglis Ready to Race sale (Sydney) in October 2022, he was transported to Singapore and won on debut in Restricted Maiden Grade 29th April with a barnstorming finish from near last on the turn. He stepped up to Novice Grade at his 2nd start, running a meritable 5th after not getting all favours. Freshened since, his work has been strong and he is ready for this event. A big strong type who tips the scales at 530kgs, he meets a talented field of 2yo’s here and has a very wide barrier draw to overcome. To be ridden by Stable Apprentice, Fadzli Yusoff, race tactics will be to let the speed go, settle in behind somewhere and then look to finish over the top of them.

John and Jessica are attending this meeting and will be hosting a party of 18 clients (many of whom are in Rhett) in one of the Corporate Suites. Some of these clients are local but others are also traveling from NZ, Australia and Malaysia to attend. Two other runners on the day are Knippenberg and Entertainer

Te Akau Racing appoints Ben Gleeson as Assistant Trainer to Mark Walker – Cranbourne operation

Te Akau Racing are delighted to confirm that Victorian Ben Gleeson has been appointed as Assistant Trainer for Te Akau Racing Australia, the stable to be based at Cranbourne, Victoria.

“I am very proud to welcome Ben to the Te Akau team.  His appointment as Assistant Trainer for our new Australian operation is a key one and he brings an outstanding CV to the role, rich in Australian and international experience,” said David Ellis CNZM. “Ben knows the Australian racing environment like the back of his hand, everything he does is with a huge degree of professionalism and energy.  I know he will be a major asset to our new stable.”

Concluding five years in the same role to Danny O’Brien at Flemington, Barwon Heads and Geelong, Ben comes from a racing and breeding family. He graduated with a Bachelor in Business Management from La Trobe University, Melbourne, and has worked for top trainers, including a European racing experience while working in the United Kingdom.

“Mark Walker and I have met a number of times over the last month,” Gleeson said. “David Ellis and Mark offered me the role, which is obviously a position too good not to take up and I’m both humbled and excited about the appointment and glad to be joining the Te Akau team. I’m joining an operation that is incredibly successful, especially over the past decade, one that reaches an international ownership base and I’ve always been keen to get out and meet as many people in the industry as possible. Gleeson grew up on Phoenix Broodmare Farm at Euroa, Victoria, where he learned and assisted his father Damian Gleeson with breeding and foaling, and his mother Merilyn Anderson with training at Seymour. He then broadened his experience through the school holidays working for local father-and-son trainers Lee and Shannon Hope at Seymour. After graduating he worked for Peter Moody, Henry Dwyer, and very successful trainer Hugo Palmer during two years in the UK, which included time in Germany, France and Ireland, while learning about the racing systems employed in those countries.

“Peter (Moody) really kindled my passion for horse training, while I advanced my riding and overall horse skills working with Henry Dwyer, and I found the European experience invaluable,” Gleeson said.

Gleeson is preparing to spend a week in New Zealand at our Matamata stable as well as Te Akau Stud.

“I arrive on 13 August, and am looking forward to seeing all the horses, and finding out the detail of the stable operations. I’ll be ready to apply this, with my own experience, as we kick-off at Cranbourne, he said. Mark (Walker) is very open-minded and encourages input from all his team, which is probably why he’s such a successful trainer. I am really looking forward to being involved in putting Te Akau Australia on the map,” Gleeson concluded.

David Ellis concludes “The aim is to have horses in the new Cranbourne stable by the first week of September. We hope to have 20 horses training by November and have a goal of up to 60 – 80 in 12 to 18 months. It’s an exciting opportunity and time for Te Akau owners with our new Australian stable construction now underway. Hi John and the Fortuna Team – Back to the drawing boards this week after last weeks selection got way to far back and was running home well but too late to feature. This week is again tricky as the rain looks to show its self and make the tracks very testing. So I have decided to look at Rosehill Race 6 – Acappella Sun, who is in a purple patch of form and always hits the line hard. Has the services of Amy McLucas who is an up and coming apprentice and has ridden this daughter of Sebring Sun the last few starts so knows the horse well.

Is paying $7 / $2.40 on fixed odds so like last week 2 over 3 for every $5 should reap some good returns.

Martin Devlin is a household name in NZ to anyone who follows Sport – the veteran sports broadcaster has delighted, shocked and no doubt at times offended a couple of generations of sports fans. Staunchly “sticking to his knitting” of Sports commentary, he has up until recently, avoided being dragged into ant sort of political commentary. However, clearly a man who loves his country, its heritage and his fellow New Zealanders, he felt moved to launch what might be described as a “blistering attack”on the current state of affairs in NZ and the impact that was having on those close to him. ELLIOT NESS races in the Class 5 1100 Poly event – Race 1 @12 noon Singapore time (4pm NZ Time) with Fadzlin Yusoff to ride with a 2kg claim. Holds the Track record this trip and surface, but his form recent starts has been moderate. Drops in grade here however and his most recent win was when he dropped to Class 5 last time. Has a wide barrier draw to overcome, so will need some luck in running, but if he gets it, he can run into the money

In a race littered with class droppers, this Jason Ong trained galloper looks the pick off his last run where he qualified for class 5 but stayed up in class 4 and went down a slim margin to Time Travel in slick time.
2nd Pick: DOC HUDSON (1)
The second of the runners for AP Tan in this race who makes his class 5 debut after a solid first up performance up in class 4 to only go down by 3.4 lengths, big chance.
3rd Pick: ELLIOT NESS (2)
Back down to class 5 for the first time in a while and off recent form, the drop down will be welcomed. Hopefully amongst this company he can find some form which we couldn’t see of late at the bottom of class 4. Can place here but needs to lift.
4th Pick: FLAK JACKET (3)
The old boy finds himself back to class 5 again and finally draws a gate for once in his life. Amongst class 5 company he is always a chance and is proven to carry weight, you would be silly to leave him out of the numbers and quartet plays.

NAVALHA scores his 4th career win – Awapuni Synthetic

A winner at Riccarton in the spring, Navalha (5 g Sebring – Afiado, by Encosta de Lago) returned to his best form for victory in the $14,000 Carters “Trade Leaders Now Online” Rating 65 1700 metres on 7 July on the Awapuni Synthetic track. After struggling a bit for form on wet turf tracks recently, the decision was made to try him on the Synthetic surface 16th July  in the Rating 65 1400 metres, where he put in a strong finishing performance for 2nd. Up in trip to 1700m this time Navalha  travelled well for rider Michael McNab in the early running, improved his position to three back inner nearing the 600m turning for home and once sighting daylight he burst through to record a compelling victory.

It was patient handling by the current Champion jockey Jockey, recording his 150th win for the season and set to retain his title again this season, while the manner of victory suggested Navalha had advanced nicely for his last start effort.

“It’s good that he’s handling the poly-track surface so well and it’s always good to win races for Fortuna Racing, who are great supporters of the stable, and I think he’s got more wins in him too,” said trainer Mark Walker, who claimed another victory (195th) in a record-breaking season. “It was a lovely ride by Michael who is riding at the top of his game.”

Raced by the Fortuna Navalha Syndicate, Navalha has now recorded four wins in New Zealand including winning his first two starts  over 1200 metres.

Fortuna Director, John Galvin was on course at Awapuni along with a few Members of the Ownership group and was a satisfied Syndicate Manager after the race
“He’s a horse that has performed well against good horses at Premier level, but he has had some soundness issues, dislikes wet surfaces and so and it’s great to see him back in winning form for his owners – being an off the pace style runner has worked against him sometimes, but Michael gave him a lovely ride and it was a strong effort under 60kg. Great to see him run out the 1700m on the Synthetic and now that we know he can run that sort of trip, it opens a few more doors for him.”,

NAVALHA (which means “Razor” in Portuguese), a 5yo Gelding by Sebring out of the Encosta de Lago Mare, Afiado, was acquired by John Galvin on the recommendation of Mark Walker, for just A$27,500 from the Inglis Digital Sale in July 2020 after having been originally acquired by James Harron Bloodstock for A$475k as a yearling.

About The Two Year Old Colt by Mastercraftsman out of Trikala

This lovely Colt was bred in Ireland and was acquired as a Two Year Old by the Deburgh Equine/Fortuna Racing combination at the annual Tattersalls Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale on 26th May 2023. International Bloodstock Agent Hubie De Burgh had identified this Colt as a genuine middle distance/staying type whose ideal racing trip would be 10 to 16 Furlongs. Hubie has recommended  that he stay in Great Britain for his Two Year Old and Three Year Old racing seasons and then, depending on outcomes, consider to relocate him to Australia or New Zealand for his ongoing racing career.

Nicknamed “Frankie” in honour of the great Frankie Dettori who is in his last season of riding, he has been transported to the yard of Newmarket Trainer, Harry Eustace and is currently enjoying a three week paddock spell. He will come into work 1st July and be prepared for an Autumn Two Year Old campaign with the aim of having two or possibly three races October/November 2022. This Colt is by that wonderful Sire of genuine middle distance/staying types, the late Mastercraftsman (by Danehill Dancer) – the winner of seven races including the Irish 2000 Guineas. Mastercraftsman is the Sire of 930 winners, including 96 Stakes winners. A truly International Stallion, he shuttled to Windsor Park Stud and his stakes winners in this part of the world include Danzdanzdance, The Auld Floozie, St Emilion and Valley Girl. Racing Plans
“Frankie” has come into work 1st July andwill  be prepared for an Autumn Two Year Old campaign with the aim of having two or three races October/November 2022. He would then spell over the winter months of December/January and come back into work 1st February to be prepared for his Three Year Old Season (he turns three on 1 January 2024) –  obvious targets for him would be the UK and Irish 2000 Guineas events, both run in May of 2024 and the Epsom Derby or Irish Derby run in June 2024 and there are a number of lead up races for these event which enable the Trainers of promising 3yo types to assess whether their charges are genuine Guineas/Derby prospects and If not, there are a number of sideways options that can be pursued. In September/October 2024 (when he will be an Autumn 3yo)  we will review his form and results and if we consider him to be a suitable type for Australian/NZ Racing, we will transport him to Victoria where he will join Mark Walker’s Te Akau Racing Stables at Cranbourne

“Over the last six years we have selected four Irish/UK bred staying types as “tried horses”, Chance to Dance, Leaderboard, Khafeef and No Envy and all have won for us – I love the staying prowess of these types of horses. We did buy a 2yo Churchill Colt (My Finest Hour) in 2022 at a similar sale – he was also sent to Harry to train, but unfortunately he suffered a tendon injury just before making his race day debut. However undeterred by that setback we have gone back to the well and come up with this fellow. My assessment of this Colt is that he is a lovely looking horse, very athletic, strong staying pedigree and we secured him “under budget – he looks to be a very fine prospect for us.”

Craig didn’t get out of the starting gates last week with his selection being withdrawn – here is what he selects this week

Hi John and the Fortuna Team – Well not a great start or a false start maybe with my selection Russian Satire last week being scratched. Watch out for when he does line up next but maybe they decided it was going to be too heavy at Te Rapa last Saturday.

This week I have turned my attention to Ruakaka and a nice 3 year old colt from Tony Pikes barn having its first start for this campaign.

 My selection is Slipper Island in Race 6 with the Michael McNab aboard. This horse ran some very good races as a 2 year old and against some of the best around and now a year older and stronger finds a very winnable race to start off. He has had 2 trials to prepare, one which he won and the other a very comfortable 2nd.

Early fixed odds have him at $3.50 / $1.65 so well worth an each way bet of 2 over 3 for every $5 invested.

NAVALHA makes it 4 career wins when victorious on Awapuni Synthetic 7th July 2023

A winner at Riccarton in the spring, Navalha (5 g Sebring – Afiado, by Encosta de Lago) returned to his best form for victory in the $14,000 Carters “Trade Leaders Now Online” Rating 65 1700 metres on 7 July on the Awapuni Synthetic track. After struggling a bit for form on wet turf tracks recently, the decision was made to try him on the Synthetic surface 16th July  in the Rating 65 1400 metres, where he put in a strong finishing performance for 2nd. Up in trip to 1700m this time Navalha  travelled well for rider Michael McNab in the early running, improved his position to three back inner nearing the 600m turning for home and once sighting daylight he burst through to record a compelling victory.

It was patient handling by the current Champion jockey Jockey, recording his 150th win for the season andset to retain his title again this season, while the manner of victory suggested Navalha had advanced nicely for his last start effort.

“It’s good that he’s handling the poly-track surface so well and it’s always good to win races for Fortuna Racing, who are great supporters of the stable, and I think he’s got more wins in him too,” said trainer Mark Walker, who claimed another victory (195th) in a record-breaking season. “It was a lovely ride by Michael who is riding at the top of his game.”

Raced by the Fortuna Navalha Syndicate, Navalha has now recorded four wins in New Zealand including winning his first two starts  over 1200 metres.

Fortuna Director, John Galvin, was on course at Awapuni along with a few Members of the Ownership group and was a satisfied Syndicate Manager after the race “He’s a horse that has performed well against good horses at Premier level, but he has had some soundness issues, dislikes wet surfaces and so and it’s great to see him back in winning form for his owners – being an off the pace style runner has worked against him sometimes, but Michael gave him a lovely ride and it was a strong effort under 60kg. Great to see him run out the 1700m on the Synthetic and now that we know he can run that sort of trip, it opens a few more doors for him.”

NAVALHA (which means “Razor” in Portuguese), a 5yo Gelding by Sebring out of the Encosta de Lago Mare, Afiado, was acquired by John Galvin on the recommendation of Mark Walker, for just A$27,500 from the Inglis Digital Sale in July 2020 after having been originally acquired by James Harron Bloodstock for A$475k as a yearling.

NAVALHA contests the R65 1700m event – Race 8 @ 4.12pm with Michael McNab to ride from a good barrier. Impressed on this surface 16th June 1400m running 2nd off a wide barrier draw. Gets an inside draw here, goes up in distance which will suit and has the services of NZ’s leading rider – has 60kgs to carry but if he does so successfully, he can win here – showing $2.50/$1.30 fixed odds

Singapore – Saturday
ROCKY races in the Class 4 1600 Poly event – Race 6 @2.30pm Singapore time (6.30pm NZ Time) with N Zyrul to ride with a 2kg claim. Has raced this trip and surface in last two starts and been ridden wide each time, beaten just 1.7 lengths last start. Change of rider will see a more groundsaving run and if he gets it will be very competitive – each way

Fleet Footed arrives in Victoria to commence pre training

Fleet Footed has arrived at Widden Stud where he will have a pre training regime in the hands of the very experienced pre training specialist, Matt Upton, based at Widden Stud. Matt will bring Fleet Footed along quietly and he will be one of the first horses to enter Mark Walker/ Te Akau Racing new training facility at Cranbourne when it opens the doors 1st September.

At that point Fleet Footed, all having gone well, will be very close to trial stage fitness, he will trial soon after and we can get him to his race day debut. Fleet Footed was a A$550k yearling acquired by NewGate/China Horse Club as a Stallion prospect, but proving very Colty, he was offered for sale by them after he trialed at Warwick Farm in April and we were able to acquire him for just A$50k. Incidentally, in that April trial, he was beaten just under a length by King Colorado, who a few weeks later won the Group One JJ Atkins Stakes at Eagle Farm.

More good news in New Zealand as a further $30 million injection of funding to the racing codes is announced by the TAB:

TAB New Zealand has announced its direct funding to the domestic racing industry will reach a record-setting $215 million for the upcoming 2023/24 racing season. TAB NZ’s direct funding of racing is made up of a distribution payment to Racing New Zealand, the application of class 4 gaming proceeds to the Racing Authorised Purpose, and funding of the independent Racing Integrity Board. The announcement sees a further $30 million made available to the three racing codes in addition to the increases determined at the time the Minister for Racing, Hon Kieran McAnulty, approved TAB NZ’s strategic partnering arrangement with Entain.

Nick Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of TAB NZ, said the Entain partnership is a revolutionary moment for racing and one that will deliver the ultimate goal of a long-term, sustainable racing industry. “TAB NZ recognises bold funding decisions are required to sustain this storied industry for generations to come,” Mr Roberts says. “Leadership across the industry must own the moment and deliver a right-sized industry, with the best animal welfare standards, and a compelling customer product. This extra injection will deliver the best outcomes if it is targeted towards those types of initiatives that enhance the industry in the long run. Simply increasing the funding of the status quo is not sustainable.”

The increased funding comes from an additional $15 million being added to the TAB NZ distribution to Racing NZ for the 2023/24 racing season, raising it to $185 million – a $60 million increase, almost 50%, on the current season’s distribution of $125 million.
Additionally, TAB NZ has determined that it will no longer fund the Racing Integrity Board from its class 4 gaming operation which will allow a contestable fund of $15 million for applications under TAB NZ’s Racing Authorised Purpose.

“We’re keen to back those that are in relentless pursuit of sustainable outcomes – and we expect that will be a key consideration when determining future funding applications,” Mr Roberts says. “A month into the partnership with Entain, we are deeply encouraged by some of the announcements we have seen out of the industry – especially New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s Strategic Funding Document announced two weeks ago.”

Hi John and the Fortuna Team – Thank you for the opportunity to be the guest selector over the next few weeks.

Is it just me or are you sick of the rain. When looking at tracks around NZ it seems to be how heavy will it be at each meeting which is making punting a bit of a guessing game.With more rain predicted for this Friday and Saturday this weekend will be no different and I tossed up between a horse I have made a few dollars off in the past at Awapuni – She’s So Reliable in Race 6 or a horse at Te Rapa I have been following and believe will handle the very heavy track that Te Rapa will produce.

I have settled on Russian Satire in race 7. This 3 year old daughter of impressive stallion Russian Revolution started this campaign with an emphatic win by 6.5 lengths on this track back in May then has had no luck in its next two starts.  One with a slipped saddle then the next racing very wide and pushed back on the turn when she was trying to get closer. Up jumps Michael McNab and I think this combination will be very hard to beat and think Michael will present her with the opportunity to win. Fixed odds are $4.50 / $1.90 which I think are extremely generous but expect them to be shorter closer to the start time.
