Friday Flash 14th January

Fortuna has five runners this Saturday 15th January in Singapore

Singapore

King Arthur is in the Class 4 1000m Poly (Race 4 at 6.30pm NZT) – a very strong last start winner this trip and surface two weeks ago – Shafiq retains the mount – has to carry 59kgs but drawn to effect – a good beginning may make him hard to catch and run down in this race – strong each way credentials

Here is what the Singapore Turf Club tipsters say about this race;

1st Pick: KING ARTHUR (1)
Very smart win last start over this distance. Jumped wide and covered ground but still too strong and he will be hard to hold out again in this.
2nd Pick: SKY EYE (2)
Meets a field where he is a genuine Top 3 player. A consistent galloper who has just run into some tougher opposition but never far away in a finish.
3rd Pick: SNIP (9)
On the quick back-up after last week where he finished in fourth position, not far from the winner. Likes the distance and can sneak into the multiples up in class again.
4th Pick: LIM’S ZOOM (6)
The 2022 season’s opening winner. Was ridden more forward than usual that day and duly obliged. This is tougher, but he can still take a hand in this.

Red Rover is also in the Class 4 1000m Poly (Race 4 at 6.30pm NZT) – will be ridden by CC Wong from the outside barrier in a small field – it has been over two years since this horse has won in Singapore but did win 3 in a row in 2019 this trip and surface off higher ratings than his current rating – can feature with luck in running and will be at big odds

Hadeer is in the Class 3 1100m Turf (Race 10 at 9.30pm NZT) – winning three in a row and running 2nd over four starts this trip and surface at the back end of 2021 – all in the hands of Te Akau apprentice Jerlyn Seow, who takes the mount again – produced a winning trial 4th January – has risen sharply in the ratings but Jerlyn claims 3kgs – loves to lead and any rain on the day will only enhance his chances – very good each way chance

Here is what the Singapore Turf Club tipsters say about this race;

1st Pick: LIM’S KOSCIUSZKO (4)
Unbeaten and looks all poised to make it five wins in a row even if he is rising in class. All four wins were recorded over course and distance. Hard to beat.
2nd Pick: HADEER (2)
Game sort who seldom puts a foot wrong. Maps well for this race but will have to beat the selection. Can still run a cheeky race.
3rd Pick: IRONCHAMP (5)
On the quick back-up after his gutsy third to Be Bee last Saturday. May have to do some work from wide alley to press forward. Not without place claims.
4th Pick: REIGNITE (9)
Could not quite measure up when stepped up to Class 3 level. Has drawn the widest but he gets back, anyway. Visors on. Unproven on turf but with a bit of luck, he may pinch a place.

Cosmic Sands contests the Class 4 1400m Turf (Race 11 at   10pm NZT)  – disappointed at his only Singapore start to date 20th November – however this 4yo son of Prince Of Dubai out of a Galileo Mare is a 2 win horse in Australia – Shafiq takes the mount and blinkers go on – bred to run a trip, he may well need this resuming run before showing his best – watch the market

Brutus contests the Class 4 1200m Turf (Race 12 at 10.30 pm NZT) – has drawn mid field with Shafiq to ride – well performed in Singapore with 3 career wins – last start winner who loves to be up on the pace – presents as a strong each way chance here

Here is what the Singapore Turf Club tipsters say about this race;

1st Pick: BRUTUS (7)
Loves to get to the front and bowl along dictating the race. If he finds an easy lead and doesn’t go too hard, he will take some beating again.
2nd Pick: IN ALL HIS GLORY (2)
Stable is low-flying at the moment and he comes into this fresh off a break. Trialled nicely and has been competitive over this trip in the past.
3rd Pick: LIM’S BESTBREAKER (8)
Finished off last year with a nice second behind Valorous in a similar style event. Watch any market moves for support.
4th Pick: SILENT PARTNER (4)
Comes into this race six points lower than the last time he won at the end of 2020. Competitive Class 4 race which should have good pace in it and watch him running on.

Fortuna Racing’s Four Year Old Mare Soprano Supreme wins Maiden Race at Matamata

SOPRANO SUPREME (4yo Mare by Contributer out of the Zabeel Mare, Falsetto) was impressive at Matamata 12th January when winning the NZ Bloodstock Pearl Series Maiden 1600 by almost five lengths. A strong finishing run for 2nd over 1400m 23rd December saw punters send her out a $3.90 clear favourite with the very much in form Te Akau apprentice Joe Kamaruddin (claiming 2kgs) in the saddle. The race plan was to go forward from her mid field draw and that was executed perfectly by horse and rider, landing in a nice spot outside the leader. Traveling nicely in the run, Joe gave her a bit more rein approaching the turn and on turning for home, she sprinted away from field to go to the line with a 4.75 length margin in the smart time of 1.35.38

Trainer Jamie Richards was on course and expressed a lot of satisfaction with the win “Soprano has been a very slow maturing mare and we have needed to be very patient with her and give her the time she needed – but she was very good last start 2nd here at Matamata before Christmas and the extra trip today was right up her alley. Lovely ride by Joe who rode her to instructions perfectly. Bred to stay, she will have another run at 1600m and then we will get her up to a 2000m trip. Congrats to John Galvin and his Fortuna Team – they have been incredibly patient with this Mare.”

Fortuna Racing’s John Galvin was also on course with a solid representation of Syndicate Members “That was exciting to watch – she always seemed to be going well in the run and certainly was very dominant in  how she finished off the race – in her earlier career starts she was showing us glimpses of her ability, but just needed time to mature and grow into herself. Neat ride by Joe and well done to Jamie for bringing this mare along quietly – and well done to David Ellis for picking this Mare out of the 2019 Sale for us – I had asked him to select a genuine staying type for us and once again he has delivered”

Soprano Supreme was acquired by David Ellis on behalf of Fortuna at the NZ Bloodstock 2019 Karaka Yearling Sale for $62,500 from the draft of Te Runga Stud.
She is raced by the Fortuna Soprano Supreme Syndicate, an Ownership group of 62 individuals from New Zealand and Hong Kong

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

Our expectations of this sale were that it would be hot, hot, hot and with a sales average nudging almost A$300k, our expectations were not wrong. Te Akau and Fortuna Racing’s former Singapore (and now returning NZ Trainer), Mark Walker has been on the Gold Coast since early January researching the catalogue and conducting inspections. My brief to Mark was simple “find a filly that meets our type criteria, has a strong pedigree page, by a proven sire – budget A$110,000” – Mark identified 5 Fillies that he thought might meet our criteria, particularly the budget one, the first two went for “overs” but he managed to snare Lot 270, a Filly by Rubick at slightly over budget (A$120,000) – Out of a winning Stakes placed Fastnet Rock Mare (Miss Foxwood) – this Filly ticks all of the physical boxes big time and has a pedigree page, that if she was to succeed on the race track, would lead to her having significant residual value as a broodmare on retirement from racing. Mark Walker says “John, you have done really well here with this Rubick Filly – I have seen every lot go through the ring and seen many fillies who don’t match her type or have her pedigree page, make a lot more money than she did. She represents great value.”

David Ellis, working in closely with Mark from his Te Akau base concurs John, you have made an art form of finding value types for your Fortuna Team over the years – this Filly is a cracker – I thought she was a “must buy’ but also thought you were no show of securing her for your budget – well done and I am looking forward to welcoming her to the farm next week
