Fortuna Racing acquires a 3yo Gelding who will be nominated to run in the Group One VRC Derby over 2500m at Flemington for A$2m on 2nd November 2024
WEST INDIES is by the highly successful Stallion, Fastnet Rock out of the Galileo Mare, Anchovy, this makes him a half brother to the promising Sailing Away (by Merchant Navy), the 4yo Gelding currently racing in the Fortuna Silks in New Zealand. WEST INDIES, trained by Ciaron Maher, made his debut at Hawkesbury 3rd Sept running 4th, then won at Kembla Grange 1400m 3rd October before running 4th in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic over 2000m 19th October.

Fortuna Racing’s trainer, Mark Walker, was at Caulfield on the 19th, observed the run and marked him as a nice staying type. Noticing he was being offered by his Ownership Group, including Coolmore Stud, Mark brought WEST INDIES to our attention, we had him vetted, he passed with flying colours and we managed to secure him for A$200k (plus GST) on what was our last bid.
Mark Walker says
“John, well done on securing WEST INDIES on Wednesday – on reviewing this horse’s run at Caulfield last Saturday, I thought this was a golden opportunity to secure a runner for one of the great races on the Australian Racing Calendar, the VRC Derby. He sports a great pedigree page being by the mighty Fastnet Rock out of a Galileo Mare and my assessment of him is that he will stay all day and well into the night for that matter. Reviewing his run at Caulfield at Group 3 level over 2000m, I though it was very meritorious, given that it was just his 3rd raceday start and he was stepping up from a winning performance at Maiden level over just 1400m in NSW. I also noted that the race at Caulfield was run at quite a slow tempo, which was not to his advantage – he would have been better suited by a race run at a faster tempo. It was reported to us that he had a good blow after the race and I am predicting that he will have taken huge improvement and is set to run a strong race in the Derby in 10 days time. Looking ahead, I am sure this horse will be a strong contender for the Autumn 3yo Staying events as well and as a 4yo old and older, he should develop into a powerful staying type. I am genuinely excited to have this lovely horse in our Cranbourne barn”

WEST INDIES – the 3yo Gelding by Fastnet Rock out of Anchovy
Readers should note that WEST INDIES was acquired at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale from the draft of Cambridge Stud by Ciaron Maher for A$525,000 and was syndicated among a high profile ownership group including Coolmore Stud, who clearly had bought him as a stallion prospect, but needing to be gelded he no longer met their business model of “stallion making” hence the reason for him being offered for sale.
Acquired by Fortuna Racing for A$200,000, WEST INDIES is to be syndicated for the capital total of NZ$292,000 – this includes purchase price, Aus GST, promoters fees, insurance to 31st January 2025 and NZ$17k of working capital.
