This Colt by Merchant Navy was selected on behalf of Fortuna by the Te Akau Selection Team of David Ellis, Jamie Richards and Mark Walker assisted by Joe Walls and Marcus Corban from the NZ Bloodstock Yearling Sale held at Karaka in New Zealand in early March.
David and his team had been working on a brief provided to them by Fortuna Racing’s John Galvin to select a nicely pedigreed, physically correct Yearling Colt, who would be an early enough runner as a Two Year Old to be a contender for the NZ$1m Karaka Million race run at Ellerslie in late January 2023, but also had the scope to develop into a strong Three Year Old Type. As always, Fortuna had set a budget and the Team identified five likely prospects on Day One of the Sale – we didn’t have to wait long as the first target on the list, Lot 85, the Merchant Navy – Anchovy Colt came in under budget and was knocked down to the David Ellis/Fortuna Racing bid for $60,000. We have given this Colt the Stable nickname “Salty”
“Salty” – Yearling Colt by Merchant Navy out of Anchovy
Pedigree
SALTY possesses a very strong pedigree. His Sire, MERCHANT NAVY is a son of the exceptional proven Stallion, FASTNET ROCK. MERCHANT NAVY was an outstanding performer on the race track winning seven times, was unbeaten as a Two Year Old with three wins and then winning Two Group One races as a 3yo, firstly the Coolmore Stakes at Flemington (1200m) and then, having travelled to the UK to race, the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot (1200m). He also won the Group 2 Greenland Stakes (1200m) at the Curragh in Ireland. Regarded by several good judges as the fastest son of Fastnet Rock, his oldest progeny are Two Year Olds and he has 2 winners to date from just 8 runners
Salty’s dam is ANCHOVY (by Galileo) – she only raced once but she is a daughter of one of the world’ greatest ever Stallions in Galileo and she is closely related to the Champion European horses, Duke of Marmalade and Ruler Of The World and the well performed Group winners Annus Mirabilus and Norway

Selector’s view (David Ellis)
“Merchant Navy was a great racehorse and is an exciting young stallion and this Colt looks to have many of his attributes. On the dam side, he is out of a Galileo mare, who is out of a Storm Cat mare, who is out of a Kingmambo mare and you can’t get better international blood than that – he is closely related to two European Champions, DUKE OF MARMALADE and The Derby winner RULER OF THE WORLD – This Colt looks like he’s going to be an early Two Year Old runner and I gave him a B + when assessing him – he is particularly good buying at the price we secured him for.”
Trainer’s view (Mark Walker)
“I have been watching the progeny of Merchant Navy on race days and trials and I note that they are always finishing strongly, hinting that they will get better with time – however this Colt looks to be a real precocious early Two Year Old type who can be a genuine contender for the 2023 Karaka Million race. We will look to break him in straight away and have him in for his first Stable preparation toward the end of April”

Syndicator’s view (John Galvin)
“It is always hard to obtain a Yearling that is capable of being “early” enough to be a contender for the Karaka Million – indeed Fortuna has not had a runner in the KM since Melody Belle won for us in 2017 – we have purchased several yearlings since then that have gone on to win as Three and Four Year olds, but have not been ready as Two Year Olds – this year may well be very different with this lovely Colt – he looks as if he just want to get up and run – and as always, due to our policy of seeking “value” for our clients,, we have acquired “Salty” at a very good price”
