This Filly by Merchant Navy  was selected by the Fortuna and Te Akau Trainer, Mark Walker, from the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale held in Melbourne. We have given this Filly the stable name “ZOI”)

Mark had been working on a brief provided to him by Fortuna Racing’s John Galvin to select a nicely pedigreed, physically correct Yearling filly, who could potentially make a 2yo, but had the scope to develop into a quality 3yo and older horse. As always, Fortuna had set a budget – this time of A$70k. Mark had identified three Fillies to target- all were vetted and passed with no issues. The sale was strong, however this Filly was the first of our three to go through the ring and we were able to secure her for budget – a very satisfying result.

Pedigree

ZOI possesses a very good pedigree. Her Sire, MERCHANT NAVY is a son of the exceptional proven Stallion, FASTNET ROCK. MERCHANT NAVY was an outstanding performer on the race track winning seven times, was unbeaten as a Two Year Old with three wins and then winning Two Group Ones as a 3yo, firstly the Coolmore Stakes at Flemington (1200m) and then, having travelled to the UK to race, the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot (1200m). He also won the Group 2 Greenland Stakes (1200m) at the Curragh in Ireland. Regarded by several good judges as the fastest son of Fastnet Rock, his oldest progeny are Two Year Olds and he has 2 winners to date from just 8 runners

ZOI’s dam is PINDARA (by Star Witness) was a well performed racemare winning 4 times at a distance range of 1000m to 1400m from 10 starts – she is from a strong, multigenerational Australian winning family

“I have been watching the progeny of Merchant Navy on race days and trials and I note that they are always finishing strongly, hinting that they will get better with time – I was particularly taken with this Filly’s physical attributes – very strong through the shoulder and a lovely walk – I think she can be an early runner, but has the scope to train on as a Three Year Old – she represents exceptional value at the price we acquired her for.

I am now back in New Zealand and in the next few weeks will take over from Jamie Richards as Head Trainer for Te Akau Racing in NZ and I am really looking forward to preparing this Filly for John Galvin and his Fortuna Ownership Team for her racing career.”

• 10% share $13,400– 5% share $6,700– 2.5% share $3,350 – 1% share $1,340
• Share price includes all Initial Costs (Purchase price, NZ GST on entry to NZ, Promoters Fees, Transport to New Zealand, Insurance through to 31st January 2023, and Working Capital of approx $14,000
