Type
A big strong, robust type, she looks like she will make an Autumn 2yo, but with plenty of size and scope will develop into a lovely 3yo- Click HERE to see this lovely Filly parading
Pedigree
Featuring a great pedigree page – by a Golden Slipper winning stallion in PIERRO (himself a son of the mighty Lonhro) who won 11 races in his illustrious career (6 as a 2yo) and out of a More Than Ready Mare, who was out of a Fastnet Rock Mare, who was out of a Zabeel Mare, this is a pedigree page with incredible depth. PIERRO is the Sire of 544 winners with 40 Stakes Winners, including 6 individual Group One winners. The dam, Angel Helena, won twice in Australia, but is a half sister to the Group One winning (NZ 1000 Guineas) and 2011/12 NZ Filly Of The Year, Planet Rock. Also featuring in the pedigree is the eight time winning galloper, Ringo (Fastnet Rock) who was an extremely tough handicapper in his day
Preparation Plans
Plans for this Filly will be to bring her back to NZ, give her a nice spell, break her in during the Autumn, then a first prep at the Matamata Stables, assess and work out a racing plan from there. Not eligible for the Karaka Millions races of course, but the Group One 1000 Guineas at Riccarton in Nov 2027 would be a very logical target for her as a 3yo and the Black Type races in the Autumn of her 2yo year also present nice initial targets for her
Trainer Mark Walker comments
John and Team, well done on a great buy with this beautifully bred, athletic Filly – We certainly thought we would have to pay a lot more than we did and were prepared to do so. She has an outstanding pedigree page being Sired by a Golden Slipper winner and who has sired six Group One winners himself and out of a More Than Ready mare – More Than Ready was one of the most successful stallions in the history world racing. We know the family well – the 2nd Dam, Planet Rock, by Fastnet Rock, won the 1000 Guineas at Riccarton and the Eight Carat Classic at Ellerslie and was the NZB Filly of The Year in 2012, the third dam was by Zabeel, so you just can’t get better bloodlines than that – physically, she is just a beautiful moving Filly with a great attitude – Pierro was a champion race horses and he’s been a very successful Stallion at Stud – his Group One winning daughter, Arcadia Queen was a racemare whom I admired greatly and this Filly reminded us so much of Acadia Queen – our veterinary passed her with colours flying and we’re very excited to be having her at Matamata in our training stable
Costings
Paperwork is still being finalised but all up this Filly will be syndicated for a total of $180k, this includes cost of horse, NZ GST on entry to NZ, Promoters Fees, Freight to NZ, Magic Millions Series Fee, Insurance to 31 Jan 2027 and $11k of working capital – shares available right down to 1%
Expression of Interest
Syndication paperwork is being finalised but we are taking expressions of interest and all you need to do to go on the list is email John HERE outlining the % you would like to take – this expression of interest is not binding on you until such time as you have perused the full syndication paperwork and placed an order

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale 13th-18th January – John and Jessica are attending
And this success by the Te Akau selection Team has rubbed off in a highly significant manner for Fortuna Racing, with remarkably, every single horse that has been acquired by Fortuna from a Magic Millions Sale having been a winner – yes a 100% success rate – our very first acquisition was Tell A Tale who became a Multiple Group winner, including the 2008 Group One 2000 Guineas for prizemoney of $1m; Handsome Rebel was acquired for A$65k and after recording one win for us in NZ, we sold him to Hong Kong interests for over NZ$400k – other acquisitions include Meteoric Lass, Dancarina, Angels Wings, Porcia Catonis, the Stakes placed Rubicon Crossing and Marokopa Falls and of course, our current “rising star”, the unbeaten and Group 2 Winning 2yo Filly, Lara Antipova
John and Jessica travel to the Gold Coast Monday morning and will be at the sales grounds Monday Afternoon to inspect the lots that David, Mark and Team have put on the “Fortuna List” – as always, we will be “buying to budget” but will not compromise on quality and we will be aiming to secure an athletic, early running Filly. The Sale can be viewed online at the Magic Millions website, but not long after we make an acquisition, news of that can be seen on the Fortuna Social media channels, Instagram, X and Facebook and there will be a “breaking news” update come to all on our Mailing Lists soon after as well – we are also recording expressions of interest ahead of the sale as well, and if you are on that list you will see regular updates from us throughout our inspections and the sale itself, so if you would like to email an expression of interest you can do that by emailing john@fortuna-nz.com

West Indies, a two time winner on the flat in Australia is being prepared for a jumping programme in the upcoming jumps season. A 4yo gelding by Fastnet Rock out of a Galileo Mare, he is bred to stay all day and loves a wet track – he has been schooling over the Hurdles at Cranbourne for several months now and shows real affinity for the jumping game – in full work now, he will be aimed at a couple of highweight races during February, will have two mandatory Hurdles trials late Feb, early March before making his Hurdles debut and the iconic Warrnambool 3 day Carnival in the first week of May will be a nice target for him
As is common when we make a decision to change direction with a horse from flat racing to kumps racing, there are some syndicate Members who do not wish to be involved in a jumping proposition and accordingly 4.5% of the shares have become available – these shares are being offered for zero up front consideration with ongoing costs from 1 February of NZ$60 per month per each 1% share – if you have interest in taking up all or part of this offering (we will do shares down to 1%) then please email me john@fortuna-nz.com or call/text 021 921 460============================================================
LEGEND OF KINGS – still some shares left
That’s all about to change with the launch of the TV series “Upon The Land We Stand”. Hosted by the former International Super Model, Kylie Bax, now of course, a well known breeder and syndicator right here in NZ, this programme takes an inside look at the life of Thoroughbred racehorses here in NZ – and the good news is that this progamme is going to be featured on non racing Channels such as Freeview, Sky Go and Sky Now – click HERE to see a promotional Video – first episode 7pm Saturday 10th

Guest Commentator – Des Coppins
Greetings John and Fortuna followers.
We’ve kicked into January in good spirits after some decent competitive racing at Trentham on TAB Telegraph day last Saturday.
It’s been a busy week and the black type races as part of the 9-race show at Trentham were generously complimented with some decent provincial meetings with wonderful crowds.
We are now leading into more holiday racing with big city days at Trentham and Ellerslie to enhance the enjoyment.
It’s Question Time from a breakdown of stories over the past week.
Q1: How unfortunate that the traditionally popular Thames’s meeting at Te Aroha was severely impacted by atrocious underfoot conditions. To see close on 68 scratchings one has to ask, would that be the biggest number we’ve ever seen on a summer race date?
Q2: Were you wondering why those in charge didn’t try to postpone the meeting by 24 or even 48 hours?
Q3: Didn’t First Five’s win in the group one TAB Telegraph prove once again how this great sprint suits 1400m type horses as opposed to straight out 1200m stars?
Q4: While January 3 is the earliest the Trentham summer carnival has ever started the bonus was clearly having the world’s best jockey on course wouldn’t you say?
Q5: When you ride champions like Romantic Warrior and Via Sistena to multiple big race wins and 21 group ones in one season (2024-25) chances are the bank manager sees you as his best friend. If you add last seasons prize money alongside the 5 months so far this season J-Mac’s total is just on $A50m. Not bad for less than 18 months is it? Our top man, Craig Grylls in comparison for the same period, has grossed $NZ9.3m. Craig earns 5% in NZ while James gets the same percentage in Australia but 10 percent in Hong Kong.
Q6: J-Mac is not only a hero in the eyes of racegoers as evidenced by the “selfies” and signings he undertook at Trentham with the public but his fellow riders in the jockeys room wanted much the same and accordingly a few them lined up for a picture with him. Some rode against him for the first time as well in the Levin Classic and the Telegraph.
For some of these riders that may well be a one-off wouldn’t you say because his international diary is full season after season which naturally limits his NZ presence?
Q7: Didn’t La Dorada’s win in the Levin Classic on Saturday once again prove how sad it is for this historic race to lose its group one status for the first time after 45 years? In the last 5 years 4 winners of the race have between them won 13 group one races. Despite the downgrade the excitement lives on. Saturday’s race was a beauty.
Q8: While none of us condone excessive whip action by jockeys do you think a local jockey in a lessor race should pay $600 for breaching the whip rules while a visiting jockey, on a similar offence, must pay five times more because it was a black type race?
Do you feel maybe the punishment should focus on the infringement but not the purse!
In case you weren’t aware jockeys can lose 50 percent of their riding fee in black type races for breaching the whip rules.
Q9: In terms of animal welfare and the people we need to work with to ensure our industry is doing its utmost why do we call whips, whips?
The Oxford Dictionary says a whip is a “blunt weapon or implement used in a striking motion to create sound or pain.” Heaven knows why we can’t officially change the name to a more user friendly word , ie “ the persuader!”
Q10: It’s Kumara’s big day on Saturday. While some venues may be fighting for survival either now or further down the track let’s not forget the fights Kumara has had to endure in its 138 years!
a. In 1948 the club was issued threats of closure from a report of the Royal Commission on gaming and racing but the next year it posted a record turnover.
b. In 1964 the NZ Racing Conference recommended Kumara close its venue and shift to Greymouth. A ground swell of submissions opposing the move proved successful.
c. In June 1975 the club was notified by authorities again that 1976 would be the last time for Kumara and the club was to either transfer to Greymouth or have their license revoked.
Once again tenacity paid off with political intervention by Robert Muldoon.
And 50 years later, despite a few weather impacted cancellations, Kumara remains one of the best holiday venues in the land.
Kumara’s perseverance and resilience is pretty special isn’t it?
TRENTHAM TRIO TO FOLLOW
GRAIL SEEKER : attacked the line with the quickest sectionals and she is certainly back to her best. She stormed to victory in the Telegraph 12 months ago and whether it’s the Railway at Ellerslie or the BCD sprint at Te Rapa she’ll be a leading light.
SWEETEST THING: her run on debut in a black type two year old augurs well for what comes next. She’s eligible for the Karaka Million but a path culminating in the Sires Produce at Trentham on March 28 may make more sense.
DOCTOR ASKAR: he looks right back to the form that saw him win 5 races in a row including the Easter at Ellerslie. He looks a genuine Thorndon Mile chance on January 17.
Good punting!

Performing in a manner reflective of the prohibitive odds ($1.20), Lara Antipova (2 f Russian Revolution – Artistic Lass, by Myboycharlie) impressively won the $175,000 Windsor Park Stud Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) on Saturday 20th Dec at Trentham. After having her rivals covered to win a trial on 14 November at Avondale, Lara Antipova then bolted in by eight lengths on debut in the Maiden 2YO 1150 metres on 7 December at Te Aroha, and rated a top three chance at stakes level.
Ridden again by leading jockey Craig Grylls, who was also aboard at Te Aroha, Lara Antipova appeared in great order behind the barriers before the start, began well to settle outside the leader, and steadily increased her winning margin after taking control at the 200m.
“She was obviously very dominant in her first start and stepping up to the next level, you wonder if it was too easy the first time, but she’s proven it again,” Grylls said. “She’s so professional and credit to Mark (Walker) and Sam (Bergerson), she did everything perfectly. She jumped and put herself there, but the sort that if I wanted to take a sit she would come straight back. She got across the junction really well, balanced up, and all I had to do was give her a couple of slaps on the shoulder.”
Winning by four and a half lengths, Lara Antipova ran 1100 metres in 1:03.3 on Soft5 footing.

“It was a terrific performance to win and great to get the result for John and Jessica Galvin (Fortuna Racing) and their owners,” Co-Trainer Mark Walker said. “I remember, going back a few years now to 2004, when we won the Wakefield Challenge Stakes for John (Galvin) with a filly named Kapsdan (Kaapstad). Lara Antipova has always shown a lot of natural ability, and it was great that our buying team was able to pick her out at the yearling sales, within John’s budget. We sort of targeted stallions and the buyers were a bit cold on the progeny of Russian Revolution at the sale, but we knew he was capable of leaving Group One winners. Originally, she failed the scope at the sale, because she had pharyngitis and had to go back to the vendors for 30 days. John didn’t actually syndicate her until we gave her a jump out last spring, and we told him we thought he had a really good filly. It was good of John to do it that way, because we wanted to know she was one-hundred percent in the wind. So, it’s been a real success story so far and it looks like she’s got a really bright future.
“We bought her at the Magic Millions sale in January, and we’re looking forward to getting back there in a few weeks with the buying team: Dave (Ellis), Marcus (Corban), Reece (Trumper), our Vets Jack O’Brien and Doug Black, and myself, and again looking for horses of good value like Lara Antipova.”
Owned by Fortuna Lara Antipova Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), she was purchased for A$100,000 by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing, from the draft of Vinery Stud, at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and has an ownership Group comprising more than 60 individuals
“Obviously she was pretty short in betting and the market was treating her as though she was unbeatable, but I’m always cautious in that situation,” John Galvin said. “As I said to the owners, we’ll celebrate when she crosses the line, not beforehand. We were always going to be delighted if she won, but to win by that sort of margin, on the back of beating a stronger field than she beat on debut at Te Aroha, meant she drew a bit of a line in the sand, today, I think, in terms of her overall quality.”
In relation to how she coped with the overnight trip away, Galvin said: “Interestingly, she hasn’t been the greatest of doers in the feed bin, but Roydon (Bergerson), where she stabled at Awapuni, said to me she travelled well and licked the bowl clean last night. Hopefully the trip away will be the making of her and she remains good in the feed bin. We’re boutique syndicators at Fortuna Racing, so we can’t expect to be having winners everyday of the week, but to have a filly like this after the recent success of Bellatrix Star and previously with Melody Belle is really nice, and it’s pleasing to be able to deliver these sorts of results on a regular basis,” Galvin added.

LARA ANTIPOVA happy connections – Trentham 20th Dec 2025
Lara Antipova is by dual Group One winning sprinter Russian Revolution (Snitzel), Leading First & Second Season Sire in Australia, out of Artistic Lass, who won five races from 1800m – 2200m.
Becoming the sixth Wakefield Challenge Stakes for Te Akau, Lara Antipova is scheduled to have a break for a week, before preparing for the $225,000 J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 14 February at Matamata, and $550,000 Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) on 7 March at Ellerslie.
“We won this race with Maroofity (Maroof), who went on to become Champion Two-Year-Old, and then a year later with Kapsdan, for John (Galvin), and I’m thrilled for him and the owners to win it again,” said Te Akau Supremo David Ellis. “Lara was impressive winning on debut and really stepped up today with another impressive win, so it’s pretty exciting for everyone involved. She wasn’t an expensive filly, but by a good sire and there is plenty of stakes winners in the family, so now she’s joined them and really added to her value.
“We’ve been putting a lot of time and effort into our preparation for the upcoming yearling sales at Magic Millions, on the Gold Coast, where we bought Lara Antipova, and then Karaka, both coming up in January, so it’s good that these horses that have been bought earlier this year are performing like they are.”

Cutting a pretty picture through the line, Lara Antipova (2 f Russian Revolution – Artistic Lass, by Myboycharlie) bolted in on debut in the $18,500 Manco Maiden 2YO 1150 metres on 7 December at Te Aroha. After having rivals covered when winning a trial on 14 November at Avondale, Lara Antipova had shown natural precocity from the outset of her career and justified favouritsm ($1.80) with an eight-length victory.
In the hands of leading rider Craig Grylls, Lara Antipova began well to situate second, travelled easily on the bridle turning for home, and romped clear inside the 300m to win as she liked.
“I was outside the leader straightaway and she had a really nice kick at the 300m, and when I went for her again, she found more,” Grylls said. “It was pretty effortlessly done and it’s a bright future for her. She’s an old head on young shoulders and did everything professionally.”

Getting into second from off the pace, stable-mate Miss Perna (Satono Aladdin) provided a quinella for trainers Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson, while the win was their sixth two-year-old win this season and came a week after Kinnaird (Home Affairs) won on debut at Otaki.
“It was a really impressive performance by Lara Antipova and great to get another winner for John and Jessica Galvin and their owners,” Walker said. “John came with us to the Magic Millions Sale in January and we formed a shortlist of stallions that were not in demand at the time. Russian Revolution was among them, and although an outstanding stallion he just wasn’t the current flavour. She was certainly very well bought at the price (100k) and given the manner of the win she looks to have a bright future.”
On Good4 footing, Lara Antipova ran 1150 metres in 1:07.2, last 600m in 33.2.

On course, Co-Trainer Sam Bergerson said: “She was electric and her trials leading in had been good. There is still plenty of improvement and furnishing to come. She was very professional today and hopefully some nice targets for her over the summer.”
Bergerson suggested the $175,000 Wakefield Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) on Saturday 20 December, or the $225,000 Elipse Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 1 January at Ellerslie, could be possible targets.
Owned by the Fortuna Lara Antipova Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), an Ownership Group comprising over 70 indiduals, she was purchased for $100,000 by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing, from the draft of Vinery Stud, at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
“It’s probably an understatement to say it was a very good performance,” John Galvin said. “It’s great to be involved and great to have another winner at Te Aroha. We have liked this filly for quite a long time and she’s always shown the training team that she is pretty special. When we bought her, the sire Russian Revolution was just getting underway and his progeny have really hit their straps in the last couple of months, including Libertad who won the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) last weekend in Perth. Well done to Mark and Sam for their training effort and very much an armchair ride for Craig Grylls.”

John Galvin also relayed that Lara Antipova is the name of the lead female character in the award-winning novel Dr. Zhivago, (set during the Russian Revolution) which, when made into a film won an Academy Award, where Lara Antipova was played by Julie Christie.
Lara Antipova is by dual Group One winning sprinter Russian Revolution (Snitzel), Leading First & Second Season Sire in Australia, out of Artistic Lass, who won five races from 1800m – 2200m.
She became the fourth individual winner for the mare, including winner of five races, Caring Lass (Sebring) and four-time winner Bubbly Lass (More Than Ready).
Grand-dam Famous Painter (Peintre Celebre) left plenty of stakes’ performers, including Group Two and Group Three winners Sistine Demon (Excites) and Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa), and Group Three placed Themoonlitegambler (Good Journey) and Scully (Shooting To Win).
The pedigree is further enhanced by third dam Rancheetah (Rancher), who recorded eight wins including a stakes’ win, and among five winners she left Group Two Gallopini (Canny Lad).
Lara Antipova was strapped by Murala (Mali) Mallesh.
