Legend Of Kings wins jumpout at Matamata Thursday 29th January

LEGEND OF KINGS is a 5yo son of the Epsom Derby winning Camelot whom we acquired as a one win “tried horse” from the Inglis Digital platform last December. Arriving in NZ from Australia mid December, he has absolutely thrived, putting on 25 kgs and loving his new environment. He went to the jumpouts yesterday on the course proper at Matamata, ostensibly to have a “quiet hitout”, but he was determined to make a statement and finished up winning his jumpout – Click HERE to see footage of that – he jumps from the inside barrier – he will now head to the Ellerslie trials 10th Feb and safely through that, he will make his NZ debt over 1600m in R65 Grade – Still a few shares left in this lovely Staying type that we are aiming toward the NZ Cup in November – Click HERE to read all of his details and shares can be purchased off this link

Fortuna acquires a Circus Maximus Yearling Colt from Karaka Book One

Jessica and I inspected this handsome Colt at Phoenix Park Farm yesterday – click HERE to see footage

And read all of his details below

Fortuna Racing acquires a genuine Derby/Cups Type by the emerging Sire of Stayers, Circus Maximus

Background

Pre Sale Mark Walker, David Ellis and I had hatched a plan to buy a genuine Staying type at this year’s Karaka Sale, a type with the pedigree behind him or her, backed up by strong physical attributes. The Te Akau selection team had picked out Lot 283, the Colt by Circus Maximus out of the Fastnet Rock Mare, Asama Blue and we had set a budget of $100k to buy him. As always, we don’t bid on a horse until it is “on the market” and, noting that he was passed in @ $70k, we followed up with the Vendor, the Sir Peter Velaowned Pencarrow Stud and we successfully negotiated a sale at just $60k, well within our budget

Physical Type

A strong, well developed yearling with a lovely free flowing walk, this Colt is not going to be an early 2yo, but has the scope and the pedigree to develop into a powerful 3yo, with raceday targets such as the NZ 2000 Guineas in the Spring of his 3yo year and the NZ Derby for 3yo’s in the Autumn as logical targets and then as an older horse, the 3200m Cups races such as the NZ Cup, the Wellington Cup and the Auckland Cup, would be logical targets

Pedigree

Our new Colt is by Circus Maximus, himself a son of the mighty Galileo. Circus Maximus was a champion miler and triple group one winner who after displaying group one form as a two-year-old trained on to beat the best of his generation as a three-year-old in the group one St James Palace stakes at Royal Ascot over a mile. He franked this form in the autumn of his three-year-old season against the older horses when winning the group one Prix-de Moulin at Longchamp also over a mile. At four Circus Maximus was successful again at Royal Ascot in the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile joining the champion Frankel as a son of Galileo to have won both of these prestigious Royal Ascot races

Click HERE to see his pedigree

Circus Maximus is a shuttle Stallion who stands at Windsor Park in the Southern Hemisphere breeding season – he joins a long line of successful shuttle Stallions that have stood at Windsor Park, including Tale Of The Cat, Montjeu, High Chaparral, Mastercraftsman and Rip Van Winkle. The dam of our new colt is the Fastnet Rock Mare, Asama Blue – bred in the UK, she was a winner there before coming to NZ, where she won again and was good enough to run 2nd in the Group 3 Anniversary Handicap at Trentham – the 2nd Damsire is the mighty Sadlers Wells and notable that Sadlers Wells is also the 2nd Damsire of Circus Maximus. This is a very strong International Pedigree page.

The oldest progeny of Circus Maximus are now 3yo’s and currently he sits in 2nd place on the 2nd season Sire table with 5 individual winners (6 wins) and has already had a 3yo Stakes winner, the Te Akau trained Towering Vision, who is the current equal favourite for the $1m NZ Derby run on the 7th March

Selector David Ellis comments

“Congratulations John in securing this lovely Colt at a great value price – I really loved this horse at inspections and my notes say “definite Derby, Cups type” – he has a wonderful pedigree page being by an emerging Sire, who was a high class racehorse and a son of the Champion Stallion, Galileo – and his damsire is Fastnet Rock, another champion and the 2nd damsire is Sadlers Wells, you cannot get better blood than that”

Trainer Mark Walker comments

“John, as you know, pre sale you and I identified Circus Maximus as a Stallion that we wanted to target at this Sale as he is a Stallion that we have taken a lot of notice of late, not only with winners on the track but also good trial performers as well and we think he has the potential to be the next Zabeel here in NZ. We have one of his sons, Towering Vision in the Stable – already a Stakes winner, he is one of the faves for the NZ Derby in a few weeks time. Just incredible that you were able to secure this horse for just $60k – we admired him at inspections with his lovely walking action and his physical type – he has all of the attributes to develop into a powerful staying type and Sam and I are really looking forward to getting him under way in the Stable”

Racing Plans

This Colt is now at Phoenix Park near Ohaupo and we will parade him at our Owners Day 8th February at Matamata Racecourse. After a decent paddock break, he will be broken in and then have a short initial preparation at the Matamata Stables before another paddock break and then a 2nd, more comprehensive preparation which may well lead to a trial in the Spring, that dependent on Trainer assessment of his his physical maturity and development. He will be registered for the Karaka Millions Series – the 2yo race in January of 2027 may well be beyond him but the 3yo Karaka Classic over 1600m in January 2028 for $1.5m would be a genuine target – sold through a NZ Sale, he is also eligible for the NZB Kiwi for $4m in March of 2028

Guest Commentator – Des Coppins

Greetings John and Fortuna followers.

Weren’t both the Ellerslie Karaka Millions Race Day  and the subsequent Yearling Sales magical?

It’s best wishes to you John and your team as you start working through the ownership drill for the lovely Circus Maximus Colt  you purchased with the assistance of the tried and true Te Akau team.

Of course the Karaka sales came on the back of some wonderful racing, spearheaded by the talk horse of the moment, Well Written. I’ve been in racing professionally for over 50 years and the turn of foot she showed after she hit the front half way up the straight was as dazzling as I’ve seen since maybe La Mersome 50 years ago. It’s hard to imagine how they will beat her in the $4m Kiwi. Even this far out, some 5 weeks away, she appears to hold a mortgage on our richest race. I just had a browse through the TAB odds, $1.20!!

It’s exciting for us all and like our great champions of the past both here and in Australia, Well Written will continue to draw not only the racing fraternity in but those with an ounce of interest as well. Well known political podcaster Sean Plunket of The Platform fame had a 10 minute chat with me this week about the filly. Sean’s a self proclaimed “ not even a once a year racegoer” but wanted to share with his audience the story of the horse that’s stealing decent headlines and what it means to the racing industry having a star like this around.  I think we all know what it means but it’s so special when racing is spoken about in a positive way in on racing media. It does us, our industry, the world of good.

CUP NUMBER 54 FOR ME

This week the spotlight falls on Trentham with the prospect of sunny weather and a perfect racing surface.
It’s Wellington Cup Day and I’ve been fortunate to have never missed the race since seeing the giant killer Simon de Montfort steal the prize in 1972. Cup number 54 on Saturday got me rattling the grey matter to share some thoughts surrounding a race that’s been around 1874, 152 years.  Holy heck I’ve seen more than one third of them.
Here are some spur of the moment observations I’d like to share.

THE TIME IS SPOT ON FOR ANOTHER 100 TO ONE

COULD this be the year of a rank outsider winning the Wellington Cup? Simon de Montfort won it in 1972 and paid $184. Twenty seven years later in 1999 Miss Bailey won at odds of 143 to won and 27 years later? Well, that’s this weekend so just maybe the cycle lands on another 100 to one bolter!

And lets not forget that just three years ago, the Fortuna Racing Iron Horse, LEADERBOARD,  stunned the pundits into silence winning the Cup at odds of $51!!! – I had the honour of hosting the birdcage presentation and handing over the Wellington Cup to a very proud “boy from the Hutt”, John Galvin

FORGOTTEN THREE PEAT HERO

MOST of us know about the three Wellington cups each won  by Great Sensation and Castletown
There’s another who compares favourably with these two Trentham favourites. Way back in 1890-91 and 92 Cynista also achieved a three-peat. A fun fact for you, Cynista got her name from the first ancient Olympic woman to win a gold medal. She did so in a 4 horse chariot race. Cynista was part owned by the first stud book keeper  and a former NZ Racing Conference president and NZ Racing Hall of Fame inductee in  Sir George Clifford.

KEEPING THE FAMILY TRADITION ALIVE

KIWI is the only NZ trained galloper to win the Wellington Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same year, 1983.
Thirty seven years later Jamie Lupton, the grand daughter of Kiwi’s owner trainee Snowy Lupton, prepared Solsefei to win the Cup.

FROM OBSCURITY TO THE PROUDEST MOMENT

MISSY MOO  ran second last in the 2017 Wellington Cup, won by Gorbachev and was some 25 lengths in arrears. She never raced again but of course is the mum of the best bred NZ sprinter ever, Ka Ying Rising.

BATTLE HEIGHTS UP THERE WITH KIWI

IT could be argued that although Battle Heights never won a Melbourne Cup – he was luckless in the rain drenched Van Der Hum event – he achieved greatness in Australia by winning the Sydney Cup and the Cox Plate after winning the Wellington Cup, all in the same year, 1974.

MIXED BAG FOR MARES BUT STARS DO SHINE

IS it worth risking a tenner on a mare in this years Wellington Cup? The odds don’t stack up. For the record in the last 100 years only 10 mares have won it. Mind you the last mare to win was Mary Louisejust two years ago.
It should also be noted that the 6yo mare Daria’s Fun clocked 3.15.59 for the 3200m in 1988, a NZ record at the time which has never been broken at Trentham in the big one.
Mares make up one third of this years race.
As an aside’ the fastest Melbourne Cup at Flemington is accredited to Kingston Rule who registered 3.16.3 in 1990.

ROSSO IS BORN IN THE RIGHT YEAR

FOR  the record the most popular age of winners from44 the last 100 years  is 5 with 5yo geldings the stand out. Some 33 x 5yo geldings have won the Cup in this period. Incredibly there’s only one 5yo gelding in the race this year, the warm favourite Rosso.

WEIGHT SCALE MAY BE AGAINST THE “ TOPPY”

THERE’S an old saying in racing that weight stops trains and top weights  don’t have the best record in the race.
One Bold Cat is a wonderful stayer but he certainly has the record book to beat. He must carry 59kgs and no horse has been asked to carry anything near that weight to success except  Castletown (58kgs, twice); Good Lord (58kgs) Il Tempo (59kgs) and Great Sensation (60.5kgs) in the last 60 years. They are exceptional two-milers. One Bold Cat is not in their class but he’s a genuine favourite with many and as another saying goes, records are there to be broken.
One thing in his favour as opposed to these greats of the past is the fact they were competing in their era with 7 stone or 7 stone 4 pound minimums ( 44 to 46kgs) whereas on Saturday the minimum is 53kgs ( 8 stone – 4 pounds).

ELLERSLIE THREE TO FOLLOW FROM LAST SATURDAY

MARY SHAN: is a class mare and she turned on a quirky run I thought in the first. She appeared to be flat footed at the top of the straight when the leaders kicked and then in the last 100m she attacked the line in cramped quarters. She’s as honest as they come and another big win is on the cards in the autumn if not before.

KA RON: didn’t disappoint in the Karaka feature for two year olds. He was keen in the running and got on heels too. I’d keep him in mind for the Sires Produce at Trentham in the autumn.

MOXIE: was terrific in the Aotearoa Classic behind Tuxedo and company. SHe ran 6th but nothing ran to the line as quick as she did from the 800m. She’s won 4 of 9 and she is sure to bag further spoils as her career continues.

In closing, I’m in a generous mood.

Fortuna acquires an outstanding Yearling Filly by the well proven Stallion, PIERRO, at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale 13th January

“Selected, Trained, Ridden and Managed – By Professionals”

The Yearling Filly by PIERRO out of ANGEL HELENA

==============================================================

FORTUNA RACING  acquires a Filly by the Golden Slipper winning and proven Group One producing Stallion, PIERRO, out of a MORE THAN READY Mare at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

Click HERE to view the link from the Magic Millions catalogue

Type

A big strong, robust type, she looks like she will make an Autumn 2yo, but with plenty of size and scope will develop into a lovely 3yo- Click HERE to see this lovely Filly parading

Pedigree
Featuring a great pedigree page – by a Golden Slipper winning stallion in PIERRO (himself a son of the mighty Lonhro) who won 11 races in his illustrious career (6 as a 2yo) and out of a More Than Ready Mare, who was out of a Fastnet Rock Mare, who was out of a Zabeel Mare, this is a pedigree page with incredible depth. PIERRO is the Sire of 544 winners with 40 Stakes Winners, including 6 individual Group One winners. The dam, Angel Helena, won twice in Australia, but is a half sister to the Group One winning (NZ 1000 Guineas) and 2011/12 NZ Filly Of The Year, Planet Rock. Also featuring in the pedigree is the eight time winning galloper, Ringo (Fastnet Rock) who was an extremely tough handicapper in his day

Preparation Plans

Plans for this Filly will be to bring her back to NZ, give her a nice spell, break her in during the Autumn, then a first prep at the Matamata Stables, assess and work out a racing plan from there. Not eligible for the Karaka Millions races of course, but the Group One 1000 Guineas at Riccarton in Nov 2027 would be a very logical target for her as a 3yo and the Black Type races in the Autumn of her 2yo year also present nice initial targets for her

Trainer Mark Walker comments

John and Team, well done on a great buy with this beautifully bred, athletic Filly – We certainly thought we would have to pay a lot more than we did and were prepared to do so. She has an outstanding pedigree page being Sired by a Golden Slipper winner and who has sired six Group One winners himself and out of a More Than Ready mare – More Than Ready was one of the most successful stallions in the history world racing. We know the family well – the 2nd Dam, Planet Rock, by Fastnet Rock,  won the 1000 Guineas at Riccarton and the Eight Carat Classic at Ellerslie and was the NZB Filly of The Year in 2012,  the third dam was by Zabeel, so you just can’t get better bloodlines than that  – physically, she is  just a beautiful moving Filly with a great attitude  – Pierro was a champion race horses and he’s been a very successful Stallion at Stud – his Group One winning daughter,  Arcadia Queen was a racemare whom I admired greatly and this Filly reminded us so much of Acadia Queen – our veterinary passed her with colours flying  and we’re very excited to be having her at Matamata in our training stable

Costings
Paperwork is still being finalised but all up this Filly will be syndicated for a total of $180k, this includes cost of horse, NZ  GST on entry to NZ, Promoters Fees, Freight to NZ, Magic Millions Series Fee, Insurance to 31 Jan 2027 and $11k of working capital – shares available right down to 1%

10% Share is NZ$18k
5% Share is NZ$9k
2.5% share is NZ$4.5k
1% share is NZ$1.8k
Monthly ongoing costs from 1 April 2026 are NZ$50 per month per each 1% share

Expression of Interest

Syndication paperwork is being finalised but we are taking expressions of interest and all you need to do to go on the list is email John HERE outlining the % you would like to take – this expression of interest is not binding on you until such time as you have perused the full syndication paperwork and placed an order

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale 13th-18th January – John and Jessica are attending

Excitement builds ahead of this very popular sale which continues to set benchmarks every year – The Te Akau Team of David Ellis, Mark Walker, Marcus Corban and Reece Trumper have already conducted significant pre sale research and will be conducting on site inspections from today – for Te Akau, this sale has long been a cornerstone of its success –  independent research conducted by Magic Millions places David Ellis at the top when it comes to yearling purchases that progress to Black type winners. It’s a powerful endorsement of a simple philosophy: buy the right horse, from the right sale, with the right preparation and people behind it.

And this success by the Te Akau selection Team has rubbed off in a highly significant manner for Fortuna Racing, with remarkably, every single horse that has been acquired by Fortuna from a Magic Millions Sale having been a winner – yes a 100% success rate – our very first acquisition was Tell A Tale who became a Multiple Group winner, including the 2008 Group One 2000 Guineas for prizemoney of $1m; Handsome Rebel was acquired for A$65k and after recording one win for us in NZ, we sold him to Hong Kong interests for over NZ$400k – other acquisitions include Meteoric Lass, Dancarina, Angels Wings, Porcia Catonis, the Stakes placed Rubicon Crossing and Marokopa Falls and of course, our current “rising star”, the unbeaten and Group 2 Winning 2yo Filly, Lara Antipova

John and Jessica travel to the Gold Coast Monday morning and will be at the sales grounds Monday Afternoon to inspect the lots that David, Mark and Team have put on the “Fortuna List” – as always, we will be “buying to budget” but will not compromise on quality and we will be aiming to secure an athletic, early running Filly.  The Sale can be viewed online at the Magic Millions website, but not long after we make an acquisition, news of that can be seen on the Fortuna Social media channels, Instagram, X and Facebook and there will be a “breaking news” update come to all on our Mailing Lists soon after as well – we are also recording expressions of interest ahead of the sale as well, and if you are on that list you will see regular updates from us throughout our inspections and the sale itself, so if you would like to email an expression of interest you can do that by emailing  john@fortuna-nz.com

WEST INDIES to have jumping career – secondary market shares available for zero consideration

West Indies, a two time winner on the flat in Australia is being prepared for a jumping programme in the upcoming jumps season. A 4yo gelding by Fastnet Rock out of a Galileo Mare, he is bred to stay all day and loves a wet track – he has been schooling over the Hurdles at Cranbourne for several months now and shows real affinity for the jumping game – in full work now, he will be aimed at a couple of highweight races during February, will have two mandatory Hurdles trials late Feb, early March before making his Hurdles debut and the iconic Warrnambool 3 day Carnival in the first week of May will be a nice target for him

As is common when we make a decision to change direction with a horse from flat racing to kumps racing, there are some syndicate Members who do not wish to be involved in a jumping proposition and accordingly 4.5% of the shares have become available – these shares are being offered for zero up front consideration with ongoing costs from 1 February of NZ$60 per month per each 1% share – if you have interest in taking up all or part of this offering (we will do shares down to 1%) then please email me   john@fortuna-nz.com or call/text 021 921 460============================================================

Kylie Bax to host new TV Series on the Thoroughbred – will feature on non racing Channels

There’s not much doubt that if you are a regular follower of racing you are well served with the various coverages and programs featured on Trackside, be it racing itself, pre race form analysis, post race interviews and other programming – unfortunately for racing most of this footage goes unseen by those members of the community who are not active followers of racing – it is certainly not unheard of but it’s very unusual for racing to be featured on one of the mainstream channels.

That’s all about to change with the launch of the TV series “Upon The Land We Stand”. Hosted by the former International Super Model, Kylie Bax, now of course, a well known breeder and syndicator right here in NZ, this programme takes an inside look at the life of Thoroughbred racehorses here in NZ – and the good news is that this progamme is going to be featured on non racing Channels such as Freeview, Sky Go and Sky Now – click HERE to see a promotional Video – first episode 7pm Saturday 10th

Guest Commentator – Des Coppins

Greetings John and Fortuna followers.

We’ve kicked into January in good spirits after some decent competitive racing at Trentham on TAB Telegraph day last Saturday.
It’s been a busy week and the black type races as part of the 9-race show at Trentham were  generously complimented with some decent provincial meetings with wonderful crowds.
We are now leading into more holiday racing with big city days at Trentham and Ellerslie to enhance the enjoyment.

It’s Question Time from a breakdown of stories over the past week.

Q1: How unfortunate that the traditionally popular Thames’s meeting at Te Aroha was severely impacted by atrocious underfoot conditions. To see close on 68 scratchings one has to ask, would that be the biggest number we’ve ever seen on a summer race date?

Q2: Were you wondering why those in charge didn’t try to postpone the meeting by 24 or even 48 hours?

Q3: Didn’t First Five’s win in the group one TAB Telegraph prove once again how this great sprint  suits 1400m type horses as opposed to straight out 1200m stars?

Q4: While January 3 is the earliest the Trentham summer carnival has ever started the bonus was clearly having the world’s best jockey on course wouldn’t you say?

Q5: When you ride champions like Romantic Warrior and Via Sistena to multiple big race wins and 21 group ones in one season (2024-25) chances are the bank manager sees you as his best friend. If you add last seasons prize money alongside the 5 months so far this season J-Mac’s total is just on $A50m. Not bad for less than 18 months is it? Our top man, Craig Grylls in comparison for the same period, has grossed $NZ9.3m. Craig earns 5% in NZ while James gets the same percentage in Australia but 10 percent in Hong Kong.

Q6:  J-Mac is not only a hero in the eyes of racegoers as evidenced by the “selfies” and signings he undertook at Trentham with the public but his fellow riders in the jockeys room wanted much the same and accordingly a few them lined up for a picture with him.  Some rode against him for the first time as well  in the Levin Classic and the Telegraph.
For some of these riders that may well be a one-off wouldn’t you say because his international diary is full season after season which naturally limits his NZ presence?

Q7: Didn’t La Dorada’s win in the Levin Classic on Saturday once again prove how sad it is for this historic race to lose its group one status  for the first time after 45 years? In the last 5 years 4 winners of the race have between them won 13 group one races. Despite the downgrade the excitement lives on. Saturday’s race was a beauty.

Q8: While none of us condone excessive whip action by jockeys do you think a local jockey in a lessor race should pay $600 for breaching the whip rules while a visiting jockey, on a similar offence, must pay five times more because it was a black type race?
Do you feel maybe the punishment should focus on the infringement but not the purse!
In case you weren’t aware jockeys can lose 50 percent of their riding fee in black type races for breaching the whip rules.

Q9: In terms of animal welfare and the people we need to work with to ensure our industry is doing its utmost why do we call whips, whips?
The Oxford Dictionary says a whip is a “blunt weapon or implement used in a striking motion to create sound or pain.” Heaven knows why we can’t officially change the name  to a more user friendly word , ie “ the persuader!”

Q10: It’s Kumara’s big day on Saturday. While some venues may be fighting for survival either now or further down the track let’s not forget the fights Kumara has had to endure in its 138 years!
a. In 1948 the club was issued threats of closure from a report of the Royal Commission on gaming and racing but the next year it posted a record turnover.
b. In 1964 the NZ Racing Conference recommended Kumara close its venue and shift to Greymouth. A ground swell of submissions opposing the move proved successful.
c. In June 1975 the club was notified by authorities again that 1976 would be the last time for Kumara and the club was to either transfer to Greymouth or have their license revoked.
Once again tenacity paid off with political intervention by Robert Muldoon.
And 50 years later, despite a few weather impacted cancellations, Kumara remains one of the best holiday venues in the land.
Kumara’s perseverance and resilience is pretty special isn’t it?

TRENTHAM TRIO TO FOLLOW

GRAIL SEEKER : attacked the line with the quickest sectionals and she is certainly back to  her best. She stormed to victory in the Telegraph 12 months ago and whether it’s the Railway at Ellerslie  or the BCD sprint at Te Rapa she’ll be a leading light.

SWEETEST THING: her run on debut in a black type two year old augurs well for what comes next. She’s eligible for the Karaka Million but a path culminating in the Sires Produce at Trentham on March 28 may make more sense.

DOCTOR ASKAR: he looks right back to the form that saw him win 5 races in a row including the Easter at Ellerslie. He looks a genuine Thorndon Mile chance on January 17.

Good punting!

Fortuna Owners Day – Sunday 8th February 2026 – Guest Speaker Des Coppins

Our very popular annual Owners Day, which we have been running for many years now, is scheduled for Sunday 8th February.  And our special Guest Speaker is none other than the legendary Des Coppins – Des has had a long and storied career in racing – appointed editor of the original Friday Flash when aged just 25, his many and varied roles in racing have been as a journalist, TV broadcaster (racing programme on TVNZ before the advent of Trackside), Radio broadcaster with Radio Pacific and Radio Trackside,  racing administration (long standing director of the Wellington Racing Club), tour leader (incredibly when Des hosted his Melbourne Cup tour in 2025, it was his 35th Cup Tour) and tipster. Des has a deep insight to racing in NZ and Australia and is sure to be an engaging speaker at our Owners Day.

This will be the 2nd year we have held this occasion in February – traditionally it has been held in December – but the Feb date worked well in 2025, firstly because December can be a very busy time for most and, secondly, it gives us the opportunity to parade any yearlings we have bought either at the Gold Coast Sale or Karaka Sales in January

Here is a heart warming story featuring a couple of our really good clients

==========================================================

Guest Commentator – Des Coppins

Happy New Year John and Fortuna followers.

We’re entering into a new year of racing and whether you’re a punter or an owner or both I sincerely hope you get your fair share of winners.

There’s so much to reflect on these past 12 months as we welcome in 2026 and I’ve thought long and hard on some of the highs and lows we’ve had to deal with in 2025. There’s so much to look forward to but we can’t forget there are still some serious issues the industry has to deal with.

I’ll highlight  the pleasantries to start with.
To keep things on par I’ve listed 8 HIGHS and 8 LOWS but not necessarily in any rating order.

 HIGHS FOR 2025

1 JAMES McDONALD

He just seems to go from strength to strength. His high flying season took him right to the top again on the global stage. He was associated with two super stars in particular , Romantic Warrior and Via  Sistena and this pair has seen his group one tally grow to 123; 95 in Australia, 14 in Hong Kong, 11 in NZ and one each in Japan, United Kingdom and UAE.
His return to riding in NZ on Saturday in the TAB Telegraph at Trentham is as big as it could be as his racing calendar is so heavily booked on the world stage I doubt if we will see much of him riding here.
If you’re not at Trentham there’s a good chance you’ll set the alarm and put down whatever you are doing and see what J-Mac achieves via the telly as  he pilots his one and only ride for the day, Tomodachi.

2 WAIPUKURAU CLUB

To see the massive crowd return to the track for the first time in 6 years in November was a credit to everyone involved with the club. It just goes to show what passion and drive exists in the regions who have not always been given a fair go in the decision making arena of the business. They have been allocated two more race days this season; the Wairoa meeting on February 15 and the Hawkes Bay Cup meeting on April 26.

3 KA YING RISING

This daughter of Missy Moo, who incidentally ran last in Gorbachev’s 2017 Wellington Cup, is unquestionably the best NZ bred sprinter we’ve seen. What he did to the world class Everest field was a demolition job and the pride of Hong Kong is not just the pride of NZ and Australia, too, but of the Universe. He’s a magnet who draws in the non racegoers in as well as the purists. He is simply the best.

 4 LEVIN, FOXTON and AVONDALE

Whether these tracks are granted official race days sparingly or never, let’s give credit where credits due. They have stood up admirably as trials and jump out venues all year and much to the delight of trainers and it must be said, the industry as well.

 5 BARRIER ATTENDANTS

In safely loading horses before the start of each race and steering clear of an unruly act from a 450kg-550kg thoroughbred these hard workers deserve more than a pat on the back each race day. Some have experienced close calls and the critical role each and everyone them play should never be under estimated.

 6 RACEDAY SPONSORS

It goes without how much the racing industry relies on sponsors and a special shout out to those who have been associated with their respective clubs for 10 years or more. People and companies like the Dyke family in Wanganui, the Andertons and White Robe, Harcourts at Trentham, Jeff and Noeline Berkett, Grant Plumbing; some 15 years with the Wellington Steeples, the Sarten family at Te Rapa and there are many  others around the country who have stuck around through thick and thin. Their financial input is thoroughly appreciated, particularly by those lucky enough to reap the rewards.

7 CROWDS AT THE HOLIDAY HOT SPOTS

I touched this in the column last week and again we are seeing how important it is for those compiling our race dates ensure the right venues are allocated in this day light saving period. Racing may not be as popular at the big city tracks at this time of the year – because the holidays draw the inhabitants  away – but the call of Kumara, Tauherenikau  and Cromwell etc is just as strong as ever.
They are the grass roots of racing and as long as their race dates aren’t challenged we won’t stop enjoying a day out or two with them at this time of the year.

 8 KIWIS IN OZ

Whether it’s NZ bred gallopers or ex pats we continue to punch above our weight. In the jockeys or trainers ranks spearheaded by JMac and Chris Waller, the likes of Bjorn Baker, Mick Dee, Daniel Stackhouse, Sheila Laxon, Logan Bates, Mark Walker, John Sargent etc are doing what Brent Thomson, Greg Childs, Shane Dye,  Jimmy and Larry Cassidy, Gary Willetts, Brian Andrews, Bruce Compton, Brian Smith, Nigel Tiley, Maree Lyndon, Bob Skelton, Damian Browne and Michael Walker, and maybe a couple more, did before them.

 LOWS FOR 2025

1 SOCIAL MEDIA

It should be a respected tool.  Many people use it to get in touch with friends, to join on line communities, to keep up with the news. All this is good. What isn’t good in racing is the misinformation, on line harassment and the insults some decent people have to put up from the minority who have probably never patted  a horse in their lives.

2 ANIMAL WELFARE

With racehorses it’s a complex issue involving industry led care initiatives and significant concerns raised by animal welfare organisations regarding various practises and systematic problems. We have to remain mindful especially surrounding the controversial whip issues.

3 MIKE MORONEY

He was a towering figure in presence, personality and profile in the industry. His passing in February rocked us on both sides of the Tasman. He had justifiably in the last 12 months before his passing been inducted to the NZ Racing Hall of Fame.
Of course we have lost a few racing people from all cross sections and our thoughts remain with families and friends affected.

4 NZ OAKS TRANSFER TO ELLERSLIE

Why?
I still can’t get my head around this. When I quizzed those in charge of making the decision it was relayed that both the Oaks and the Derby are under a threat to be down graded unless their respective ratings increase. Having them both at Ellerslie will give the top fillies a chance to compete in both according to a few in authority.
The Oaks is now on February 21 and the Derby two weeks later!!
I wonder, would an “Orchestral” type of filly chance her arm in both the Oaks and Derby with each at a trip of 2400m just two weeks apart this year at Ellerslie or have a crack at just one and then  head to Sydney?
Personally I think the Oaks may have had more chance of retaining its group one status by reducing the distance to say 2000m and maybe run on January 3, TAB Telegraph Day.
In accepting whats fait accompli for at least this year, I really hope, for the sake of its future and its protection at the elite level, those in charge have done the right thing by way of the Oaks moving to Ellerslie.

5. THORNDON MILE DOWNGRADE TO GROUP 2

We are in a cross roads with our group status races and sadly the chopping block fell on this historically treasured great mile and it will be at group 2 – yet still worth $500k – on January 17.
Thinking back to last Saturday with the Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic those wonderful gallopers like Waitak, El Vencedor, Legarto and La Crique, maybe on the way down from their epic highs, so where’s the next batch of potential group one milers and middle distance horses coming from?

6 JOCKEYS SUSPENSIONS AND INJURIES

We’ve had too many.
It’s either because of over zealous whip use or ill judgement in transit. On top of suspensions and worse still, injuries, are weakening the riding ranks. There are currently 21 jockeys off this weekend through either suspension or injuries. Some big names, too.

7 LACK OF PACEMAKERS

It’s a worry to see a horse go the front and then seemingly jam on the anchors.
I loathe it. To see horses climb over each other isn’t a good look. It’s neither tactical nor should it be acceptable because it’s too risky. I suppose that brings us back to what would’ve happened had Rory Hutchings not shown initiative in the big one last Saturday?
His report card read 10 out of 10. I’m not sure what mark I’d give his fellow riders!

8. WHY NO THREE YEAR OLDS IN W-F-A 2000M GROUP ONES?

The absence of quality potential staying three year olds missing from regular group one staying trips these days is a head scratcher for many.
I guess the reason why no classy three year olds compete in races like the Zabeel, Bonecrusher, Livamol and Herbie Dyke falls back to the rich “pop up” races like the Kiwi and Karaka three Year Old.
But don’t you miss those events where three year olds played a big hand in the outcome?
Classy three year olds like Prowess, Xcellent, Roysyn, Surfers Paradise, The Gentry, Tidal Light, Bonecrusher, McGinty, Captain Moonlight, Sharp N Smart, Valley Girl, Mission Critic, Great Command, The Phantom Chance , Far Time and Just Call Me Sir all won one of the group one 2000m races listed as three year olds.

THREE TO FOLLOW FROM BOXING DAY ELLERSLIE

SHE’S NO SAINT: it was a huge run in a very competitive two year old race. To finish third after being flushed three wide for much of the way is a positive and it won’t be out of it in the Karaka Million on January 24.

FAIRY DREAM: The Ellerslie track these day are won by more horses that race close to the pace rather than back past midfield from the top of the straight. To be in the last few on the turn and rattle into 4th in the Eight Carat confirms her status as a leading light for the Oaks at Ellerslie at the end of February.

FIRST DANCE : since winning first up at Ellerslie in September she’s been thereabouts in all her racing. The other day she ran 5th and arguably had the toughest run in the straight after being held up for clear running. Clearly she was unlucky not to run in the money. A r75 over 1600m is the type of race you’d be watching closely for another win.

Good punting folks!
Hopefully 2026 is a year of celebration and prosperity for you all in the Fortuna family and whether your horse wins or loses the enjoyment will always remain.

LARA ANTIPOVA to have a short spell before tackling ambitious targets in the coming months

LARA ANTIPOVA travelled back from her Trentham assignment in great order and trotted up in perfect shape Monday morning – she has now gone for a 10 to 14 day freshen up and on her return to the stable she will be prepared for two initial late summer targets – firstly the Group Two Matamata Breeders stakes on February 14 and secondly the Group One Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie on March 7. Those two races may well bring her 2yo season to a close, but depending on performance and recovery, she could possibly go to the well one more time.

LARA ANTIPOVA in action – Trentham 20th December 3025
Reflecting on her two impressive wins to date, she clearly is an exciting prospect and is following in the footsteps of two other Fortuna Fillies that have made their marks in recent years, namely Melody Belle and Bellatrix Star. Both of these Fillies won on debut also, but interesting to note that neither won again until their 4th start, Melody Belle in the Karaka Million and Bellatrix Star in the Group Two Eclipse on New Year’s Day. Her Ownership Group, which typical of most of the Fortuna Syndicates, is quite large with over 60 individuals with a share and notable that a few of those had shares in Melody Belle and a much larger number have shares in Bellatrix Star. Also notable that a small number are “brand new” investors in a Fortuna Syndicate, which is great to see

Connections enjoying their Group Two winning success

I visited the Matamata Stables on Christmas Eve to conduct inspections of the Fortuna horses in work there and had a really good look at Legend Of Kings who had just finished his first week of work in the Stable and, gee, he is an imposing physical type, Typical of a European bred stayer, he is tall, rangy and stands over a lot of ground. Sam Bergerson was with me and reported that his trackwork rider had reported “lovely galloping action, big long stride, great temperament” – having retained some good base fitness from his last campaign in Australia, he is right on track to have a trial late January and then we will get him off to the races – we will see what he shows us in his Autumn campaign, but obvious staying targets for him in the 2026/27 season will be the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton in November and the Wellington Cup at Trentham in January 2027

Greetings John and the Fortuna Team and a special shout out to all your owners involved with your new star two year old trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, Lara Antipova. She’s top drawer for sure.

HER PICK UP AND GO WAS A DEFINING FEATURE

LAURA ANTIPOVA was a dominant as need be in the Group Two Wakefield and there’s little doubt, despite the convincing win on debut, that she took another big step against a more competitive line up at Trentham.
And how professional was she going across the junction and entering the straight?
Her pick up and go was a defining feature and clearly she’s got it all before her.

A 1% PERCENT SHARE FOR 100% ENJOYMENT

IT was so good meeting and briefly chatting with some of the Fortuna syndicate members in the birdcage post race at Trentham. One owner told me he only had 1% but that figure is offset by the 100% enjoyment  he’s having.

Too true! If she keeps lifting the bar all of you involved will have the time of your lives traveling to see her race, whether it’s in NZ, or in Australia where she may follow the footsteps of Fortuna talents of the past in Melody Belle and Bellatrix Star who did so well on both sides of the Tasman.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DOES LARRY NEED?

THERE’S an old saying in racing that people with “skin in the game” should always be contenders for the right jobs in our industry.
Former top jockey Larry Cassidy sought to become a trainee race day steward following his retirement about a year ago. He believes with 40 years as a jockey – and a top one as we all know with approximately 2800 winners and 40 at group one level – you’d think he would at least get an interview if a trainee job as a race day steward in either harness or gallops code came up.

Wrong!

Evidently according to Larry himself, he wasn’t qualified enough  for a wee chat with the hiring team for a potential position in Queensland’s racing judiciary. Un-bloody-believable as my dear late father in law would say!

DEJA VU FOR SIR PETER VELA AND J-MAC

FURTHER to my “tease” in the column  last week it’s now official that world champion James McDonaldwill be donning the silks of Sir Peter Vela for the Tomodachi mount in the TAB Telegraph on Saturday week, January 3 at Trentham.

The race falls at an awkward time for holiday makers but the locals, who stayed in the capital, will be doing their utmost I’d imagine to make it to Trentham if they can. It’s free entry, too!

I might be wrong but I can’t recall James riding at Trentham since winning the Telegraph in the same colours with Giuseppina   in January, 2012.
A three times world champ, let’s savour the moment because it won’t happen on our shores very often you’d have to think. Ellerslie Karaka nignt is out again this year for him, too, as he will be riding his pride and joy and the world’s greatest money earner Romantic Warrior in Hong Kong

TOMODACHI IS THE REAL DEAL FOR THE TELEGRAPH

AFTER watching the Matamata trial the other day I’m convinced the Wexford team have Tomodachi spot on for the Telegraph. She was under triple wraps as she coasted to the line. She’s all class!!

She won 3 of her 4 races last term and it should have been 4 from 4. Her miss, when third at Trentham behind Slipper Island, was a sad watch for punters. After being slow away she was blocked and had to change ground in the straight. The winner clocked 1.7.70 and she broke 21 for the last 400. That’s low flying!

With or without James she  was always my top fancy for the big sprint. My confidence levels have now grown further for obvious reasons.

IS DESPAIR IN THE AIR WITH DOWNGRADES?

IN the last couple of seasons Trentham’s big summer races, the Levin Classic and the Thorndon Milehave been downgraded from group one to group two.
It seems one or two other top races are not on safe ground but heaven forbid if those in the firing line, the Telegraph, the Livamol, the Oaks and the Derby get shot down.

Sadly, the chopping and changing of race dates and venues hasn’t always worked in favour of these iconic events. While stakes money has risen with the advent of Entain, the lure of selling our ready made racehorses as two and three year olds to the overseas markets will always have an effect on these races in the long run. Also the opportunity to race for even bigger money in Australia comes into play as these higher rated gallopers dodge us for the group ones in Sydney or Melbourne at their respective big carnivals. Then of course as good as the pop up races like the Karaka Millions and Karaka Three Year Old as well as the “Kiwi” are amazing attractions they, too, surely impede the group status of our traditional black type races.

With so much vulnerability surrounding our epic races these days the  stake monies is also going to be the big worry going forward. For example, the Harcourts Thorndon Mile is worth a half million on January 17 but will it sustain that figure next year? If the prize money is in fact reduced the chances of this race alone ever returning to group one status is 100 to one and drifting.

THE STRONG LURE OF THE  SUMMER HOLIDAY SCENE

HATS off to country racing at this time of the year.
In comparison I think it all comes down to a fact that  these country  race days function as major social occasions and community events, close to holiday hotspots and for many families and casual friends of racing, they crowd the venues as it’s a long standing tradition passed down through generations.

Live music, various food and drink options, pop up bars and food trucks help create a vibrant atmosphere at these holiday meetings. Of course the racing adds to the excitement but the majority of the punters seemingly couldn’t care less if all the races were maidens or one win horses. They’re normally casual and primarily gold coin punters who attend  and only  maybe prepared to risk a fiver or a tenner at the most.

To take this further a race day like Trentham on January 3 with 5 black type races including a group one may not have the same crowd as Tauherenikau on January 2. Trentham’s keen punters instead will play it big on their lap tops or mobiles in the privacy of their own homes and leave the holiday troops to turn up at Tauherenikau in large numbers.

From a business case Trentham’s off course turnover will surge; Tauherenikau’s may not but it will make its profit through the turnstiles and on the ground activity but  that makes the pair complimentary to each other for the industry’s bottom line.

I cut my teeth on the holiday racing circuits with mum and dad , uncles and aunts and few cousins. You may have done the same. I will never under estimate the   importance of these holiday racing hot spots and in reality  I don’t think any of us do.

Good punting over the holidays and I sincerely hope you back your share of winners and that Christmas and Boxing Day treated you well. Roll on 2026!

THREE FROM TRENTHAM TO KEEP ON SIDE

KOSTA: is showing real promise in its limited racing and after being awkwardly away I liked the way it hit the line despite the interrupted run in the home straight.

BUTLER CABIN: while having no chance with the dashing Lara Antipova I kept a close eye on the replay of this Jonno Benner trained two year old and I liked what I saw. The trainer already has De Armas as a leading light for the Karaka Millions. Butler Cabin is the 7th highest qualifier for the big one on January 24.

CAPACI: Astute CD trainer Robbie Patterson withdrew Dirty Dee from the Eulogy but had a great replacement in Capacia. In only its second start she registered the best final sectionals. She’s very progressive and the long range plan is the NZ Oaks.

FORTUNA 2yo Filly LARA ANTIPOVA scintillating victory – Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Group Two Level – Trentham 20th December

Performing in a manner reflective of the prohibitive odds ($1.20), Lara Antipova (2 f Russian Revolution – Artistic Lass, by Myboycharlie) impressively won the $175,000 Windsor Park Stud Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) on Saturday 20th Dec at Trentham. After having her rivals covered to win a trial on 14 November at Avondale, Lara Antipova then bolted in by eight lengths on debut in the Maiden 2YO 1150 metres on 7 December at Te Aroha, and rated a top three chance at stakes level.

Ridden again by leading jockey Craig Grylls, who was also aboard at Te Aroha, Lara Antipova appeared in great order behind the barriers before the start, began well to settle outside the leader, and steadily increased her winning margin after taking control at the 200m.

“She was obviously very dominant in her first start and stepping up to the next level, you wonder if it was too easy the first time, but she’s proven it again,” Grylls said. “She’s so professional and credit to Mark (Walker) and Sam (Bergerson), she did everything perfectly. She jumped and put herself there, but the sort that if I wanted to take a sit she would come straight back. She got across the junction really well, balanced up, and all I had to do was give her a couple of slaps on the shoulder.”

Winning by four and a half lengths, Lara Antipova ran 1100 metres in 1:03.3 on Soft5 footing.

LARA ANTIPOVA – two starts/two wins – Group Two Wakefield Challenge Stakes – Trentham – 20th December 2025
Craig Grylls aboard

“It was a terrific performance to win and great to get the result for John and Jessica Galvin (Fortuna Racing) and their owners,” Co-Trainer Mark Walker said. “I remember, going back a few years now to 2004, when we won the Wakefield Challenge Stakes for John (Galvin) with a filly named Kapsdan (Kaapstad). Lara Antipova has always shown a lot of natural ability, and it was great that our buying team was able to pick her out at the yearling sales, within John’s budget. We sort of targeted stallions and the buyers were a bit cold on the progeny of Russian Revolution at the sale, but we knew he was capable of leaving Group One winners. Originally, she failed the scope at the sale, because she had pharyngitis and had to go back to the vendors for 30 days. John didn’t actually syndicate her until we gave her a jump out last spring, and we told him we thought he had a really good filly. It was good of John to do it that way, because we wanted to know she was one-hundred percent in the wind. So, it’s been a real success story so far and it looks like she’s got a really bright future.

“We bought her at the Magic Millions sale in January, and we’re looking forward to getting back there in a few weeks with the buying team: Dave (Ellis), Marcus (Corban), Reece (Trumper),  our Vets Jack O’Brien and Doug Black, and myself, and again looking for horses of good value like Lara Antipova.”

Owned by Fortuna Lara Antipova Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), she was purchased for A$100,000 by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing, from the draft of Vinery Stud, at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and has an ownership Group comprising more than 60 individuals

“Obviously she was pretty short in betting and the market was treating her as though she was unbeatable, but I’m always cautious in that situation,” John Galvin said. “As I said to the owners, we’ll celebrate when she crosses the line, not beforehand. We were always going to be delighted if she won, but to win by that sort of margin, on the back of beating a stronger field than she beat on debut at Te Aroha, meant she drew a bit of a line in the sand, today, I think, in terms of her overall quality.”

In relation to how she coped with the overnight trip away, Galvin said: “Interestingly, she hasn’t been the greatest of doers in the feed bin, but Roydon (Bergerson), where she stabled at Awapuni, said to me she travelled well and licked the bowl clean last night. Hopefully the trip away will be the making of her and she remains good in the feed bin. We’re boutique syndicators at Fortuna Racing, so we can’t expect to be having winners everyday of the week, but to have a filly like this after the recent success of Bellatrix Star and previously with Melody Belle is really nice, and it’s pleasing to be able to deliver these sorts of results on a regular basis,” Galvin added.

LARA ANTIPOVA happy connections – Trentham 20th Dec 2025

Lara Antipova is by dual Group One winning sprinter Russian Revolution (Snitzel), Leading First & Second Season Sire in Australia, out of Artistic Lass, who won five races from 1800m – 2200m.

Becoming the sixth Wakefield Challenge Stakes for Te Akau, Lara Antipova is scheduled to have a break for a week, before preparing for the $225,000 J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 14 February at Matamata, and $550,000 Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) on 7 March at Ellerslie.

“We won this race with Maroofity (Maroof), who went on to become Champion Two-Year-Old, and then a year later with Kapsdan, for John (Galvin), and I’m thrilled for him and the owners to win it again,” said Te Akau Supremo David Ellis. “Lara was impressive winning on debut and really stepped up today with another impressive win, so it’s pretty exciting for everyone involved. She wasn’t an expensive filly, but by a good sire and there is plenty of stakes winners in the family, so now she’s joined them and really added to her value.

“We’ve been putting a lot of time and effort into our preparation for the upcoming yearling sales at Magic Millions, on the Gold Coast, where we bought Lara Antipova, and then Karaka, both coming up in January, so it’s good that these horses that have been bought earlier this year are performing like they are.”

Lara Antipova was strapped by Mahesh Kumar.

Waikato Thoroughbred Racing releases details of its proposed “Greenfields” Racing Centre to its Club Members

John says – note that the information below is a “proposal” and requires endorsement and approval by Waikato Thoroughbred Racing Members at a Special meeting possibly to be held early in 2026

MEMBERS’ UPDATE | Location of Waikato Thoroughbred Racing’s Greenfields Racing and Training Facility Announced

Season’s greetings to you all.

Thank you all for your patience as we have worked through options and due diligence to get to a preferred site for the proposed Greenfield racing and training facility.

The specific site is being publicly announced today as Pencarrow Road, Tamahere (between Hamilton and Cambridge). The size of this site is 150ha and has frontage to the Waikato Expressway, is bounded by the Te Awa River Ride cycleway on two sides and part of Duncan Road on the other.

See map below.     To view a PDF version of the map, click here.

The Greenfields site is 24km from the existing Te Rapa Racecourse, 7kms from the Cambridge Jockey Club and 28km from the Waipa Racing Club. The site is 11km from the Hamilton International Airport.

While the site is located and contained within the Waikato District Council boundary, there is proximity to both Hamilton and Waipa District Council interests so all three will be included in our conversations.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) says…
Matt Ballesty, Chief Executive of NZTR, said that the Greenfields Project is about redefining what a modern racing and training precinct can be in New Zealand. It’s not just a local project; it has benefits for the broader New Zealand thoroughbred racing industry.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to design a venue that works for today’s participants and future-proofs the industry.

“The site offers a future racing and training precinct with a broad range of amenities – not just a racetrack. Multiple club members, local residents and the wider community will benefit from an enhanced, shared asset,” said Ballesty.

NZTR and WTR both remain fully committed to progressing this significant infrastructure project. We agree that this project will strengthen economic activity, support jobs, and deepen community connections in the region.

Community views
In addition to our commitment to keeping the wider WTR membership informed and across key stages of this project, WTR is also committed to ensuring stakeholders and the wider community understand and ultimately support this Greenfields project.

To this end, the Board and Project Control Group have so far covered meetings with local MPs, Waikato Tainui, the Mayors and CEs of relevant councils, and the Tamahere Community Committee. These will be ongoing.

An embargoed media briefing was also provided to local journalist Mary Anne Gill late last week. This story will appear in the Waikato Business News later today.

Also, last week we began visiting neighbouring properties to ensure they would be advised before reading about it in the local paper. A leaflet will also be delivered pre-Christmas to properties the immediate neighbourhood.

An open day for the community will be held on 31 January in partnership with the Tamahere Community Committee to share more information and any further details we have. Members will also be invited to attend this open day.

WTR has proposed establishing a Community Liaison Group to advise on aspects of the development project should it proceed to next stage.

What next?
Thank you again for your patience as we have worked through the challenging and complex process to get to a preferred Greenfield site option.

The final scope and timing will be shaped through further discussion and genuine stakeholder engagement, as outlined. Site investigations are underway for things such as traffic, access, ecology, geology, water and drainage. These are ongoing and will be used to inform the consent approach that is needed.

The commercial details of the land purchase are confidential and the WTR Board is addressing the land purchase as part of the overall funding of the project. All project cost and funding details will be further developed during 2026.

The final agreement requires the endorsement of WTR Members. To this end, a meeting of members will be convened, likely in the first quarter of 2026.

Greetings John and the Fortuna Team

As this is my last contact with you editorially until next Friday, Boxing Day, can I take the opportunity of wishing you John and family and Friday Flash readers a safe and happy Christmas. I’ve enjoyed passing on my weekly contribution throughout 2025 and equally I hope you’ve enjoyed reading them and I’m looking forward to riding the highs and hopefully not to many lows in the year ahead.

I’m also pleased to have a respectable number of Fortuna followers on board with my email tipping service with the Best Bets for this month of December tracking around the 50:50 success mark.

If you’d like to treat yourself or a close friend to the service as a Xmas boost  simply drop me an email: dcoppins@xtra.co.nz

To celebrate these very satisfying profitable results I’m happy to ex gratis the rest of December should you decide to sign on for the next 3 months.

And wearing my Wellington Racing Club Director’s hat, a big welcome to you John and the Ownership Team in Lara Antipova as she contests the time honoured Wakefield Challenge Stakes on Saturday

I’VE BEEN THINKING

1. Did you know there are 32 jockeys who were riding this time last year but who are now currently suspended or on the injured list? Injuries crop up more often than we’d like to see and on occasions it comes down to an opposing misjudged ride. Is our standard of riding really slipping to the degree that sees 19 riders on the sideline not through injury but rather serious indiscretions on the track?

2. Some 14 years ago next month rock star hoop, our very own J Mac won the group one Telegraph at Trentham for his self proclaimed “second dad” Sir Peter Vela. For the record the horse was Guiseppina. Is there a chance history could repeat? Will the world champion be on course on January 3 and ride the pre post favourite for the TAB sponsored event, Tomodachi for Sir Peter? Watch this space.

3. We often talk about the best horse we’ve seen. Each to their own when it comes to the crunch but here’s my two cents worth.
Ka Ying Rising is the best bred SPRINTER NZ has ever produced.
Is he the best horse? I’m sticking with Phar Lap.
Is he the second best? I’m staying loyal to Balmerino.
But no question, he’s the best sprinter we’ve reared and easily the best overall we’ve bred this century.

4. While on the subject of Phar Lap, it’s the great icon’s 100th birthday next year and what better way to celebrate than having a race named in his honour at Trentham Telegraph Day. It’s the former Anniversary Mile and a champion horse needs a champion sponsor and in memory of the great owner Ron Stanley who passed away in October, the race will now be called the Ron Stanley Memorial Phar Lap Trophy. Ron was immersed in racing for 50 years, as an owner, punter, breeder, administrator, racing judge, treasurer  secretary and all round good guy. His legacy in the ownership ranks included Wahid, Woburn, Carter, Grout, Shamus and Ladies Man who retired just last week.

5. Speaking of NZ breds, Sunday’s Hong Kong Sprint should be recognised as the greatest breeding triumph our proud racing heritage has ever seen. To not only see Ka Ying Rising ( Shamexpress – Missy Moo) romp in, the first 4 home are all NZ Breds. Raging Blzzard ( Per Incanto – Perfect Beat), Fast Network ( Wrote – Alberta) and Lucky Sweynesse ( Sweynesse – Madonna Mia) ran 2,3 and 4. That’s a massive result just 5 weeks from the curtain call on the 100th anniversary of the NZ Yearling Sales.

6. Did you know it was 25 years ago last Sunday when the mare of the world, Sunline, fought it out with the Hong Kong super star, Fairy King Prawn in the tooth and nail struggle in the race of the decade. I was fortunate enough to be sitting alongside Stephen and Trevor McKee that day and even though it’s been a while just thinking of the race still gives me goose bumps.

7. Staying with the Hong Kong high end racing on Sunday don’t you feel a bit let down in this day and age that tote betting only operates. The world pools are great, but a Fixed Odds market is how many of us are now approaching the win and place scenario and  hopefully our friends at Entain will try have it all sorted for us all next year.

8. On the subject of punting how long will tote operators  be around our tracks? I sincerely hope they’re never fazed out completely, especially on the big days but I wonder whether  the simplicity of the TAB website on our mobiles  and the newly appointed pods on every city tracks will eventually win over in the end.

9. The news that Awapuni could be off the scene for all of next year and maybe longer puts extra pressure on Trentham. It’s very much deja vu as you may recall with Trentham staging 6 race days in less than 2 months at the same time last year. Trentham’s track is running freely. Last  year the surface was almost spot on for each of those 6 days and so far the rain has fallen in the right time during the week for the track curator Jamie Phillips to keep the standard high for stake holders to enjoy whi in turn have reported  favourably on.

Following the Wellington Cup day on January 31, Trentham will be gearing for meetings in March including the Sires Produce Stakes on March 28. Following that meeting, there will be some necessary future proof work to be done on the track but from all accounts it’s not expected to disrupt the Wellington Steeples carnival in late June.

10. While we embrace the great racing we see internationally today we sometimes think of what’s different and what do we miss from years gone by? This is probably a subject that deserves more time and space but here’s one that I’ll doubt we will ever see again. It’s 50 years in just over 10 months when Van Der Hum and Bob Skelton ploughed through the mud to win first prize ($110,000) in the 1976 Melbourne Cup.

Let’s just forget about the prize money variance  for the first Tuesday in November ( $5.15m first prize) for the time being as my point of difference is all about the field. Ten of the 24 were NZ trained horses with  9 of the top 12 at the top of  the handicap in Van Der Hums mud splattered win; a memory of how strong we were before the race became a global phenomenon for the two milers. Of course with the massive surge in stakes in recent times  getting one NZ trained stayer in the race would be a delight.

MY 3 FROM TE RAPA

TRISTAR: she copped a slight check at the start and that made her job tough in the 1200m. However she hit the line with purpose and a 1400m stakes race or something similar next time is well within her grasp.

POETIC JUSTICE : has now had 4 runs this term and the run last Saturday had a next up feel to it. He came home from the back with the quickest overall sectionals. The Dunstan Championship Final on Boxing Day at Ellerslie could be his next race. He deserves to be on your ticket if that’s the case.

RIDEFROMTHEASHES : stormed into third on the back of a nice trial over 1300m  at Te Rapa in the quickest time over the latter part. This 4yo ran in the Derby last season and wasn’t far away in races like the Levin Classic and the Avondale Guineas. He’s in for a good season.

Good Punting and again Merry Christmas

LARA ANTIPOVA will tackle the Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham 20th December

“Lara” bounced through her impressive debut 8 length victory at Te Aoha on Sunday without issue and after the training team weighing up different options, she will be set for the Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes over 1100m on Saturday 20th December. This is a race that we have a bit of history with because in 2004, the very first horse trained by Te Akau (Mark Walker) for John, the Filly KAPSDAN, scorched down the Trentham Chute in the hands of Opie Bosson in a time of 1.07.24, breaking Our Maiscay’s race record in the process, a record that has never been broken since

In more recent times, Melody Belle (2016) and Marokopa Falls (2024) ran meritoriously in the event, both finishing 3rd.

John will be in attendance along with what is bound to be a solid group of Syndicate Members. A good performance on the day may well see “Lara” set for races like the Group 2 Matamata Breeders Stakes Feb 14th and the Group One Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie on Champions Day March 7th

Fortuna launches a new “tried horse” opportunity – Legend of Kings (Stable Name “Arthur”) – he will target Staying Races in NZ

Our Australian based Steeplechaser, Leaderboard, is in great shape as he heads towards his first jumpout of this new preparation on 15th December – as you may well know this is his last preparation and what an absolute “warhorse” he has been for us over several seasons now.

Mark Walker and I have been working hard on a plan to find his “successor” and we think we may have achieved that with Legend Of Kings – we did consider acquiring (as we did with Leaderboard) a tried horse  from the Tattersalls sale in October, however that market has effectively become closed off to us as demand from the big Aussie and Arab buyers has simply driven up prices to ridiculous levels and there is no “value” there any more.

But favouring the Irish/Uk bred staying types, we have turned our attention to that type of horse, who has won in the UK, been brought down to Australia, shown form there, but now been moved on by their previous owners, because they have not proved competitive enough in the very demanding Australian racing scene.
Recognising that there is a big gap in class between Aus racing and NZ racing, we have focused on trying to find the right physical type with the right pedigree and the sort of form that is encouraging enough for us to be confident that we are on the right track to acquire a type that can be successful over ground in NZ, plus have the potential to be a successful jumps type in the future – and we think with this selection we may have nailed it – read more below – and note by the way that earlier this  year the Pitmans acquired a similar type (also by Camelot and bred on a similar cross to “Arthur”) – from Inglis Digital  – he is called Rosso, he had similar form to “Arthur”,  winning in the UK but running places only in Australia, and now he has won twice in NZ at distance including a 5.5 length demolition job in the 2600m race at Riccarton on Cup Day – he has now been set for the Wellington Cup – I am sure you get my drift – and like “Arthur” they did not pay a lot for him – read more below and I look forward to hearing from you
Don’t Miss this one – a beautifully bred European staying type – bred to get a decent trip and with the end of Leaderboard’s illustrious career in sight in Mid 2026, we sought to identify a “tried horse” who had the potential to be a “Cups” type horse in NZ, but also have the potential to be a jumper as an older horse – “Arthur”,  as we have nicknamed this horse, ticks all these boxes and acquired for a lot less than our budget –

Mark Walker has the following to say about this horse;
“John as you know, we set about trying to find a lovely staying type suitable for NZ Racing and Legend of Kings certainly ticked a lot of boxes for me as I conducted research on him – he certainly has the right sort of pedigree for a genuine staying type and physically, he is a lovely horse, very athletic and possessing a great walk. Showing early promise in the UK, he didn’t quite live up to his ownership groups expectations in the very competitive Australian scene, but I think he will be perfect for NZ racing, particularly at trips of 2400m plus. I also think he has a bit of physical strengthening to come and so we are looking forward to getting him to New Zealand where I am sure he can be very competitive on the flat, but also with his pedigree and physical type, he has the potential to develop into a nice jumper as well in time ”

Annual Fortuna Owners Day set for Sunday Feb 8th – Matamata Race Course

Mark your calendars – in 2025, we moved our Annual Owners day from its traditional late December spot to an early February slot – this had two major benefits – firstly it moved us away from the pre Christmas “clutter” with a lot happening in people’s lives and, secondly, it gave us the opportunity to parade any yearlings we had acquired at the Magic Millions Gold Coast and NZB Karaka sales to those attending. So we are all booked in – this time it will be held in the Gazebo  (not the Epsom lounge as it was in 2025) and we have a very “special” Guest Speaker in 2026 – our lips are sealed on that one at the moment, but all will be revealed in due course – we will be promoting this more in coming weeks, so no need to take any action just yet

Greetings John and the Fortuna Team

Trentham gave us a taste of what’s to come with its elite finish in the TAB Classic; inches away from a triple dead heat. Craig Grylls hit an important mile stone with his  1400th; George Rookeracked up his first group one while Kelly Myers rode her 50th winner at Trentham and it was so good to see another Fortuna two year old winning on debut at Te Aroha in the form of Lara Antipova who bolted in.

Heartiest congestion’s to the Fortuna owners.

Here’s a fun fact, it’s 60 years this month when the movie Dr Zhivago was released in the USA.
In case you weren’t aware or have easily forgotten Dr Zhivago’s ([played by Omar Sharif)  love interest was Lara Antipova, portrayed by actress Julie Christie, who won an academy award for her performance in the movie – and let’s be honest, that was a starring role in itself with this fleet footed filly and well named Filly. Exciting times ahead team!

I’VE BEEN THINKING

1 If James McDonald was a world champion rower, cyclist, rugby player, swimmer or track and field star, would he not be a leading light for a Halberg Sportsman of the year title? He’s about to receive yet another global champion title, his 3rd.

2 When “battling” license holders like Peter Lock snare three winners from three runners as was the case last week at New Plymouth, doesn’t the love of the underdog come into play?

3 When you consider that last week from Thursday to Sunday, the North Island had 5 grass track meetings but the South Island had none apart from the Riccarton Synthetic, is that fair?

4 Could last Saturday’s Mufhasa TAB Classic turn out to be the best group one field  of the season? Only the Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day could trump it.

5 Ignoring the unfortunate length delay following a camera malfunction wasn’t the closeness of the outcome fitting for the quality of the  thoroughbred that lined up?

6 Isn’t NZ racing fortunate to have Entain in partnership with us? Surely their serious topping up of our stakes is the main reason the jockeys rooms are now well stacked with international jockeys like the George Rooke, Warren Kennedy, Bruno Queiroz and Joe Doyle etc. Our industry needs them.

7 I don’t know about you but I’m not a fan of irrigation because it’s near impossible to spread the water evenly despite the best endeavours of our track teams. If we could rely on Wednesday deluges like last week at this time of year, the problem is solved with the warmish wind flows that follow.  Trentham was a heavy 9 on Wednesday evening but almost a good 3 at TAB Classic time. How good for a such an important day?

8 After perusing the Australian Sires Premiership, two stallions look value with their 2025 service fees, The Autumn Sun ( $A66k)  and Per Incanto ( $NZ60k). They are currently first and third on the table. In second spot at the moment is Fastnet Rock whose last service fee was $A165k but of course has since passed away. Behind Per Incanto in 4th, 5th and 6th are Snitzel ($A250k, now passed away); Zoustar ($A275) and I Am Invincible ($220k). We have to be proud for the achievements of Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto, don’t we?

9 Champion trainer Chris Waller phoned me not long ago and he reckons Ellerslie, Trentham and Riccarton should be the three venues that should have the best Saturday race dates. Growth in the industry stems from where the population is he reckons. Agree or not? Disclosure: I’m  singing from the same hymn sheet.

10 To win three group one races twice within a year with two horses is no mean feat. Hats off to the Stephen Marsh stable who did it with El Vencedor between late  December(2024)  and February ( 2025) and now Provence between January (2025 ) and last Saturday. That’s huge, isn’t it?

MY THREE FROM TRENTHAM TO KEEP IN MIND

ROSSO: the Pitmans have a very exciting staying type who is being set for the Wellington Cup. He may need another win to make the field; perhaps one of the country cups around the summer holiday circuit, or maybe the Marton Cup on Telegraph Day on January 3. He had a shocking run, three and four wide for much of the way.

SUBIACO: is no world beater but he clearly hasn’t had the rub of the green in his last two. At Trentham he was never allowed to get into a rhythm and is worth staying with. To finish less than 3.5 lengths from the winner held merit.

FRANK THE TANK: is ready to win again after two sound efforts on its latest campaign. He copped a check at the start in the group 3 over 1400m. A race like the Ron Stanley Memorial Phar Lap trophy ( ex Anniversary Mile) on Telegraph Day looks a good option.

Good punting!

Fortuna 2yo Filly LARA ANTIPOVA wins by 8 lengths on debut at Te Aroha 7th December 2025

Cutting a pretty picture through the line, Lara Antipova (2 f Russian Revolution – Artistic Lass, by Myboycharlie) bolted in on debut in the $18,500 Manco Maiden 2YO 1150 metres on 7 December at Te Aroha. After having rivals covered when winning a trial on 14 November at Avondale, Lara Antipova had shown natural precocity from the outset of her career and justified favouritsm ($1.80) with an eight-length victory.

In the hands of leading rider Craig Grylls, Lara Antipova began well to situate second, travelled easily on the bridle turning for home, and romped clear inside the 300m to win as she liked.

“I was outside the leader straightaway and she had a really nice kick at the 300m, and when I went for her again, she found more,” Grylls said. “It was pretty effortlessly done and it’s a bright future for her. She’s an old head on young shoulders and did everything professionally.”

Getting into second from off the pace, stable-mate Miss Perna (Satono Aladdin) provided a quinella for trainers Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson, while the win was their sixth two-year-old win this season and came a week after Kinnaird (Home Affairs) won on debut at Otaki.

“It was a really impressive performance by Lara Antipova and great to get another winner for John and Jessica Galvin and their owners,” Walker said. “John came with us to the Magic Millions Sale in January and we formed a shortlist of stallions that were not in demand at the time. Russian Revolution was among them, and although an outstanding stallion he just wasn’t the current flavour. She was certainly very well bought at the price (100k) and given the manner of the win she looks to have a bright future.”

On Good4 footing, Lara Antipova ran 1150 metres in 1:07.2, last 600m in 33.2.

“Lara” 1st – Daylight 2nd

On course, Co-Trainer Sam Bergerson said: “She was electric and her trials leading in had been good. There is still plenty of improvement and furnishing to come. She was very professional today and hopefully some nice targets for her over the summer.”

Bergerson suggested the $175,000 Wakefield Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) on Saturday 20 December, or the $225,000 Elipse Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 1 January at Ellerslie, could be possible targets.

Owned by the Fortuna Lara Antipova Syndicate (Mgr: John Galvin), an Ownership Group comprising over 70 indiduals, she was purchased for $100,000 by David Ellis CNZM and Fortuna Racing, from the draft of Vinery Stud, at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“It’s probably an understatement to say it was a very good performance,” John Galvin said. “It’s great to be involved and great to have another winner at Te Aroha. We have liked this filly for quite a long time and she’s always shown the training team that she is pretty special. When we bought her, the sire Russian Revolution was just getting underway and his progeny have really hit their straps in the last couple of months, including Libertad who won the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) last weekend in Perth.  Well done to Mark and Sam for their training effort and very much an armchair ride for Craig Grylls.”

Happy Connections Post Race

John Galvin also relayed that Lara Antipova is the name of the lead female character in the award-winning novel Dr. Zhivago, (set during the Russian Revolution)  which, when made into a film won an Academy Award, where Lara Antipova was played by Julie Christie.

Lara Antipova is by dual Group One winning sprinter Russian Revolution (Snitzel), Leading First & Second Season Sire in Australia, out of Artistic Lass, who won five races from 1800m – 2200m.

She became the fourth individual winner for the mare, including winner of five races, Caring Lass (Sebring) and four-time winner Bubbly Lass (More Than Ready).

Grand-dam Famous Painter (Peintre Celebre) left plenty of stakes’ performers, including Group Two and Group Three winners Sistine Demon (Excites) and Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa), and Group Three placed Themoonlitegambler (Good Journey) and Scully (Shooting To Win).

The pedigree is further enhanced by third dam Rancheetah (Rancher), who recorded eight wins including a stakes’ win, and among five winners she left Group Two Gallopini (Canny Lad).

Lara Antipova was strapped by Murala (Mali) Mallesh.
